  • your cage is to small for 2 rats and its better to get wired cage because the rats can climb, and also u need to make a platform if you are keeping the glass cage

  • @MrRattie123 Please read the item description as it clearly says in capital letters before commenting!...........

  • @sticky2208 in your 2 video you say put your hand in and let them smell you But how do you handle the bite? they bite hard and i am scared of being bitten i never been able to tame rodents because i don't wanna be bitten please help me.

  • @BoyTheBeasty if you watch my step 2 video carefully, you will see that one of the rats does infact nip me :D but to be honest rats dont really bite that much... or not in my experience anyway. I only ever had 1 proper bite, If you handle them with patience and care they shouldnt bite :) dont be scared of them, they are tiny fluff balls :) and they are more scared of you at first!

  • i was never able 2 tame one of my rats its 2 wild & mean!!!!!!!!!!

  • great video i watched steps 1 to 3 awsome!! Im geting 2 females today so very helpful thx. i had a male rat but he was alrdy tame and comfortable with people wen i bought him but he passed away a few years ago R.I.P Rat Ratterson

  • I have watched all 4 videos n i think this is a brillent way to do em! But thing thats intresting me the most is the music! lol can you tell me what it is please? :P

  • @vpq312q hehe thank you :) The music is by yiruma and its called river flows in you, Thanks for your comment :D

  • And just out a curiosity, Those dumbo rats, They have theese big bubbles on there Bumm, is that only because there male or there pregnant females? Sorry to bother, im trying to pick the right rat! :D

  • @polymerclay140 Hehe the bubbles on there bum are testicles :) the things to consider when deciding which sex to get are personalitys, male rats seem more relaxed and most like to sit around and be lazy! Females are more playful and prefer to be running round :) However ive had the odd rats where this has been opposite so :D

  • How long do rats usually live? i've decided to gets some rats and are just cuiriouse to know :)

  • @polymerclay140 hello :) Life span varies really, Ive had some that live to 3 years and others pass away young, also depends on genes.. you should buy them from a reputable breeder, alot of breeders aim for health now and breed through strong lines :)

  • I have two girl ratties, and one just wants to be my best friend, but the other one is hesitent.....she will crawl around my hands, somtimes sniffing and licking, but wont climb on me or let me pick her up at all like the other one. I have had them for about 2 weeks....i have been doing what you say but she isnt going anyfarther than that. Should i try somthing eles or just be patient? She is also the least dominant one....do you think that has anything to do wth it?

  • How many days should all these steps go over? Very nice rats by the way!

  • How old are your rats at the time of recording this?

  • @99lynx99 They are around 12 week old in these video's, Leo the grey and white one is still with me but he has HLD so i dont think he will be here much longer and Leeroy the white one sadly passed away last week :(

  • i thought rats can live up to 6 years or does it depend what kind of rat you get?

  • @ezekiel207 A rare few rats have been known to live to 5-6 years old, most however make it to 2-3 years old....3 years old is classed as a very good age for them to live now, The type of rat does not make a difference on life span though :)

  • @sticky2208 Really that's cool i didn't know that,i always thought dumbo's lived longer than fancy's lol :)

  • I really enjoy your vids :> you are so kind and gentle with winner their trust, I have never had rats but Im thinking about maybe getting two in the future and your ways seem to be a great way to start a new realtionship with the new members of the family.

  • @DeaththeKid93 aww Thank you :) Rats make amazing pets! they are so loving and fun! the only sad thing about them is they have very short lives... ive lost 3 of mine in the space of 2 month :( I really hope you do get some in the future, They are such great companions!

  • I was just wondering. I have two rats and I am unable to to some of the steps as my cage opens from the top but I have currently gained enough trust with one for them to jump onto me to retrieve food from my mouth is this a good technique or a bad idea?

  • @frasek06 Hello! You can adjust some of the steps to your liking, they dont have to be exact :) As cute as your ratties taking food from your mouth is, I would not be able to advise it, Maybe you could allow your rat to jump onto you and take food from your hand rather than your mouth, Having said that nothing is better than rattie kisses! :) Just be careful that your ratty doesnt always think there is food in your mouth otherwise you could end up with a nasty nip :)

  • Hii, my rats cage is up higher than i can sit next to and if i put it onto the ground they get scared that I'm moving them. what do you think i should do x

  • @hhannahh145 Hello Hannah! :) You can get a chair next to the cage if you have one high enough to reach the cage door or you could just carefully move the cage onto the ground and let them settle for 10-15 mins before starting to do this step :) they should be fine once they are moved, think its just the initial movement that scares them. hope this helps x

  • @sticky2208 Thanks so much! This helped a lot :) x

  • What if only one rat comes to you how do u convince the other one?

  • @mysteryangel247 one rat will often take a little longer than the other one :) Happened in these vids, leo which is the grey and white one came round alot quicker than leeroy ( the cream one) All i would suggest to do is carry on with the step the shyer rat is comfortable with untill they come round and then move onto the next, may mean your doing 2 different things with each rat though but they will both get there in the end, some just need a little more time :)

  • Do you know anything about being allergic to rats. My first rat was called Ruby and I was fine with her then I got another called Charlie and I was fine with him but I then got Sonny and Zorro and I kept getting really puffy eyes and my skin raised and red when they climbed my arms and things. I never had those problems with the other ratties I had. If you know anything that might help I would really appreciate it as I love rats so much and want to show everyone in the world how great they are.

  • @woohootoodles Hello! :) Im so sorry you had that problem with your rats :( i dont have any experience with rat allergies, however i personally have other alergies ( mainly food) and have found that pyriton is really good! i belive you can get it in tablet form now too! ( i always used the medicine) so maybe you could try that and see what happens! I will look into specific methods for rat allergies too! and ill inbox you the info i find!

  • hi, i was wondering if you could help me a problem

i have just bought 2 female rats that are 2 months old last week

both of the rats are very sweet and they're quite comfortable being outside the cage and being handle with

but the smaller rat keeps scampering around and i cant get her to hold still

any advice to keeps her calm

  • @ttpiett Hello :)

there is not really much you can do about it as your rats are female and female rats tend to be pretty hyperactive :) This doesnt mean you cant enjoy your rats though! sometimes my girls will want a cuddle depending on the mood they are in hehe :) They do tend to calm down a little as they got older too!

  • @sticky2208 alright thanks, right now my little rat is being less scampering so hopfully in time she will behave better

  • You are very good at giving advice, so I hope you can help me? I have had my baby male standards for about half a week now and they appear to be really lazy and they sleep a lot even when it's around 7pm. I don't know how old they are they are a bit bigger than a full grown Syrian hamster. Your steps have really helped me so thanks a lot :)

  • @fairmonkey212 Ill do my best to help :)

I dont know if your still having this issue now but if you are it would be best to be patient with them, my rats usually become really active from midnight onwards! however some will leap out of bed when i walk into the room at any time really :) i personally think that they will come round in time once they get more settled in, they sound like babies giving the size of them, 12-14 week usually but some stores sell them alot earlier than that!

  • @fairmonkey212 sorry ran out of room lol i think from your other comment your rats are male? in which case they are pretty lazy hehe but as i say im sure they will come round in time :) Please keep me updated!

  • they are so curiose!! i cant wait to get ours soon!

  • so how do you do the leading out thing with a glass tank? Sorry 4 asking so many questions. I just got 2 new female baby rats, and the rest i had before were very sociable when i first got them so this is kind of new

  • @Nintendogsfreak11 Dont worry im happy to answer questions :)

The cage im using in this video is a glass tank but it had sliding doors so was easy, Where abouts are the doors on your tank? if its right at the top, maybe you could add a ladder? and guide them out that way? you may have to leave the ladder in the cage a little while before they will use it though. Hope this helps.

  • it kinda seems funny but im angry cuz there were not an "urine patches". what meens that, my rat doesn't like me or...? i love your videos i think i learned a lot from you!!:D

  • @FanCyboy333 Hehe that is nothing to worry about :) your rats will of still scent marked you but maybe tiny tiny droplets, you just wont of noticed them :)

Glad you have enjoyed my video's :)

  • omg i think i just posted only half of my comment (but it's mayb that i'm wrong 'cuz im on my ipod and my ipod is weird (just like me) but i'll just post the rest now to be sure xD

(i'm at the point that 1 trust me alot but doesn't like to be putten on your shoulder or be petted and the other 1 -no matter what i do -still is afraid of me but if i put him on my shoulder he's really calm and curius and likes to be petted ) but well i'll keep trying and tommorow i'm gonna try the spoon thingie c:

  • you know you said you'll have little urine patches that are barely noticable but i gotta say: they smell... alot xD but that's ok

btw your rats are rlly cute and thx for the spoon hint (i just got 2 pet rats but i didn't rlly give them alot attention to be honest D:)

it's not like i ignored them or something but i don't play with them all day to tame them 'cuz i don't like waiting long for something to happen o_O

but anyway i do give them alot attention now (i'm at the point that 1 trust me al

  • @xChumChum Hehe are your rats male? I have noticed that the urnie patches from my boys are bigger than my girls and also have a tiny scent to them lol :) Also ive found that my boys dont like my shoulder too much either, my girls how ever love to be on my shoulder but the boys prefer to sit in my arms :) Please let me know how you get on :)

  • @SkalragRadio You can lure them out with food if you like :) your choice!

To stop you from over feeding your rats on treats, buy tiny ones like yogurt drops, or you can break big treats into smaller pieces :)

Treats should only be given as a 'treat' :) If you think your rat has had enough treats for the day then yes! wait untill the next day :)

  • This seems like a lot of crap to do just to gain their trust and even now at step four if you screw up you may have to go back to step 1. My mice trusted me in 3 days and all I did was the hand trick. I'm spoiling the crap out of my rats and so far they don't deserve any of it. I should've given all these treats to the animal that loved me not the one that doesn't. So far the spoon thing isn't working, like you asked before I'll keep you updated.

  • @SpawnRat Well nobody is forcing you to do it this way to be honest.... its advice to try help people!

Maybe revert back to keeping mice if you think these beautiful animals dont deserve your love and affection!

Dont bother keeping me updated thank you, seriously not dealing with rude people.

  • My cage doesnt open from the side like most ive seen it only has a opening at the top :( i have to small rats both sisters :) and i love them ive had them 5 days so far and went to the pet shop every week to see them grow(i went in the first time about 2 days after their birth) so ive grown attached to them even before having them...is there anything i can do which will work.Very soon im gettin a bigger cage anyway with the second side door on but until then im stuck

  • @88Grum Hello :)

You could try putting a ladder in the cage, from the bottom to the top door so they can climb out and explore on the top of the cage, you could also put a tabel or something next to the cage so they can walk onto there ( if you cant get anything level with your cage you can use a ladder again) if you struggleing to find ladders that will fit, scarfs are a good idea( providing they are secure) hope this helps :)

  • @sticky2208 yup thanks, i have a higher level that is close which they are using now :) the problem was that they were shy lol all they do now is sniff me and climb upto the door.

by the way your rats are very nice thanks for the help!.

  • Hey Blade, sorry ive taken so long to get back to you ive had no internet, Ok mothering rats can be like that, most of the time its down to protecting the babies, if your putting your hands near the babies then mum and dad are just trying to protect them :) when did she give birth? i wouldnt worry too much about it just give them all some space for a while mum will let you near the babies eventually :)

Hope this helps, feel free to contact me via mail if you want some more info

  • It is, looks like you and Bella are doing great, She will of been running to you for protection so it shows she trusts you :) your doing a great job with her

  • I have a female rat that I have had for about 5 months. she was a sweety from the start. got another female rat and slowly got em used to each other. turned out the newer rat was a male and we had babies. would have separated but the males testicles were not visible. anyway about acouple days before the birth, dad started hating me and trying to bite. he has drew blood on acouple ocasions. all i did was put my hand in the cage. didn't touch him. ran up and bit me. now mom is doin the same thing.

  • Oh, On the last Vid (Step 3) I told you how my rat eats from my hand, On day 2 she also escaped her cage and came running to me. Is that a Good sign of Trust aswell?

  • aww thats a great sign :) it seems to be the case in every pair of rats hehe one will be really confident and the other takes a little more time, really glad the video's are helping you, and thanks for your comment kofy40, let me know how they get on in the next few steps :)

  • shes not quite as bad and has not drew blood. but it was definatly not a love nip. what might be going on?

  • Btw, i'm somewhere between step 3-4. I lay my hand in front of the opening, and put a solid piece of food on the opposite end of my hand so that the rat has to go further to get it. So far i got him (only one of them) to step on my hand with his front paws, take it, and run back.

I'm hoping he'll be ok with coming out completely to me soon :)

  • Thanks a lot for your video series!

I just got a pair of 6 week old male rats from a pet store (around 4 days ago), and i'm a first time rat owner (i have owned a hamster for a few months now).

I've been taming them in a very similar way even before watching your videos since it just seemed the most logical - to start with their safe spot.

    Thanks a bunch!

  • step 5 will hopefully be up this weekend :) i have it on the pc, just havnt had time to sort it out yet hehe, and glad you like there names :) thanks for your comment :)

  • leo and leeroy cute name.hope you made step 5 good luck :)

  • Good luck today Leo and Leeroy :). You're in my thoughts.

  • Aww your doing so well hun, there getting so much more confident, shows your steps are how to do it :)

I cant wait to get to this stage with my new boys. They have names now Shadow & Hudini :D

  • The rattie footage really shows the step well and shows the patience needed. For those concerned about the scent marking you can just lay a towel over your lap during these early stages :). Your ratties are doing so well Vic, great vid :)
