APC is more the Mainstream thing for Maynard now, Tool is Legendary, so its not uncommon for them to have fans of all types. After all, you can't deny greatness =P

Danny is fucking incredible! As a drummer wannabee working clubs in a cover band, I won't even to attempt most TOOL. Truly in a class by themselves. Undertow is simply another masterpiece. I just crank it and shake my head in awe.

It seems to me that you can hear where Mastodon got their influence from. The last part of this song seems like something Mastodon would make up.  Obviously Tool has been around far longer than Mastodon, but you can see where Mastodon got their influence from.
