@AndrewtheATC it stuck with SAA as there use to be a Springbok painted on the tail fin of SAA aircraft in the 70s/80s, its also a national animal of SA
@AndrewtheATC SpringBock is the call sign for every South African Airways aircraft like Speedbird = British Airways, Dinasty = China Airlines or AirFrance = Air France gg :-)
The A340-500 and 600 is the only planes from airbus i like. The A380 is just a huge trouble infected nightmare for Airbus and it´s not getting any better. New problems pop up every week and Airbus is losing money on every plane. Big is not always better.
Wow - that is one expensive ferry flight!! Can't really tell on this vid for sure, but was it empty just for the flight to British airspace, or all the way to South Africa? I can only imagine it's performance like that, even with full fuel.
I am a Airbus A340 pilot.Regarding the flight ability of this aircraft,i m always asked and very often asked by some kids and my friends who does'nt flewed this jet ever because this aircraft is quiet heavy and like very low responce to control in,so that's not the case at all !inspite of it's weight,of it's mass, and of it's size THIS AIRCRAFT IS EXTREMELY TO RESPONSIVE TO CONTROL INPUTS WHEN YOU FLY manualy and you can fly it with fast responce, fast movements at the same time it's very stable:)
@FF35Pilot the new A380 the have a tail camera. So the new Airbus'es that are built get's a tailcamera installed for both the pilots and allso for passengers to look at their screens in their seats.
the first time i traveled alone was in a SAA 747-200 i was about 5 years old it was a flight from Cape Verde at Amilcar Cabral intl to JFK and they gaved me the wings
Ha! I've flown on ZS-SNI (Zulu Sierra Sierra November India) to Perth and we're flying back on it too! I'll take a vid. when we come back to Australia.
I've flown SAA 30-40 times.. both nationally and intyernationally between CPT and JFK. Have to say this is an excellent video! Wish there was one between Johannesburg and JFK- NY ..
With the hectic traffic coming in to NY. Showing the cool and calm professional demeanor or the pilots after such a long flight.
so if the pilot forgets to close the thrust to idle despite the calling of "Retard" that means the pilot is a retard hahahahaha nah just kidding nice vid guys!!
You know what the funny thing is, most europeans and americans dont even know we have planes in South Africa, meanwhile SAA is one of the best in the business. Man this movie makes me proud...
I think it all depends on what engines you use... Royal Jordanian has pretty old aircraft and most of their flights are 90% full! And I know Arabs love to load ton of luggage for their family! my family does it every time we go to Jordan lmao! all that adds weight, and the airbus -200/300 have always been underpowered, the newer ones however are not...
Ok I'm a pilot for Cathay Pacific flying the 744, and trust me, the engine on this aircraft will out preform the 744's anyday, the Trent 556 is an amazing engine, and the only reason the 772 and 773 have such a good takeoff performance is because the GE90-94B on the 772ER and the 772LR put out 93,000 pounds of thrust, each
@alexsirghi -- I recently had an (my first) A380 flight from Paris2Johannesburg on my way to Namibia. Frankly, I felt the A340 is a more solid airplane for long journeys. It is my favorite, too. Best from Spain.
would it not be difficult controlling the airplane if you are right handed and you are to maneuver the aircraft with the yoke/stick being on the left side?
Would it not be difficult controlling an airplane if you were right handed and you are to manuver the aircraft with the YOKE in the middle but your right hand on the THROTTLES. like in Every Aircraft made? Not much. the movements you need to make on the left hand are fairly simple. you don't even remove your hand from the yoke. Whereas the Right hand moves from Throttles to MCP to Flaps handle etc etc... Its easier just to hold something than operate 8 different things in different locations.
You heard right. Retard is a feature of the GPWS (Ground Proximity Warning System) to advise the pilots the exactly time to put thrust levers on idle position. After de pilot do it, he brings the nose up, making a maneuver known as flare.
I love how airbusses always seem to say Retard a random number of times and occasionally interrupt itself to say a random number after it too. in this case 8.
it seems to be a cue (albeit redundant) o engage thrust reversers (or whatever other systems the Airbus A340-600 has to 'retard' the jet's momentum upon landing)
The 'Retard' callout will stop as soon as the thrust levers are set to idle. The number after que 'Retard' announcement is height to the floor via a Radio Altimeter.
in the from min 5.54 to 5.58 there are pics being shown of a empty aircraft. Then there is the pliot that is flying in the dark is the pilot taking a empty plane with or without passengers here or not taking a empty plane to where ever its menat to be going to empty then or was that aircraft full with passengers does anyone know. Just out of interest
Captain is wearing the FO 3 bars in the interview about British airspace deviation, and the captain 4 bars when flying the route home. any reason why?>
When the Airbus computer calls out, "Retard" it is speaking in terms of the aircrafts vertical speed. It is calling on the pilot flying to gently raise the nose and slow the descent rate. Retard is the correct term for deceleration.
For a smooth touchdown, you want the landing gear to contact the runway gently, unlike the 4 - 500fpm descent rate in the glide. So in the final approach, the aircraft's Rad.Alt. calls out "50, 30, 20, retard, 10."
That's because Airbus planes use that word to alert the crew to slow the plane down(apply speedbrakes). You must be familiar only with Boeing jetliners, or non-Airbus aircraft.
What an amazing vid. I love that South Afrian accent and the camera up at the tail giving a full length shot of the aircraft. Great. The captain looked abit nervous when interviewed but he's great.
I think this is a great video. Only thing that is better than the DVD is the A340-600. For such a large aircraft, it cost AUD$8000 an hour. In comparison a 747-400 costs $14,000 an hour.
They decide which pilot is going to fly that "leg". Meaning, one pilot takes off and lands on a trip from south africa to heathrow and the other pilot takes off and lands on the way back to south africa.

I think I will order this DVD next
