I agree love the concept yet not the egoic bravado of being so reckless ... plus not respectful to others ... little too self indulgent ! can see the free style fun tho ;)
dude if someone said "dude ur a noob, brakes are for pussy" just dont care about them, its about safety, just dont care what they say, just be yourself bro... :D
I used to have a BMX with no brakes, and another with the pedal brakes, back when I was 10. Some of these are fun. I'd get one, but with bigger tires and at least one brake. Still don't like the fad though. especially those with the "loteria" cards in the spokes, pussy pads, pedal straps, ridiculous colors/handle bars, and having to straddle the frame to skid, (pansies). It's like they're the new two wheel ricers.
@mavdj This sums it up. Nothing wrong with a fixie but it's the idiotic shit people put on their bikes. No problem having a little fun with a bike, I like my cannondale to look cool too, but I'm not about to put baseball cards in the spokes or streamers on the handlebars. They can even leave the brakes off if they want but not me, I had a front brake fail on my old lugged steel road bike and I was very relieved to have a second brake instead of careening into a ditch at 50 kph in the rain.
@mavdj Pedal Straps Are important for Fixed gears , Because skidding in slow speeds without straps are hard enough , let alone at High Speeds.... , while Toe-clips , are ideal to use at high speed but doesnt really help when you want to Mid-Skid....
@R4pidSh0t well taht depends on the type of straps you use with the clips i read a lot of sites and forumes and found that cadence straps are one of the best straps to use while on a fixie and from experience they are i never have to tighten them
i agrre, having no brakes is moronic. Rub yourlast two brain cells together and get brakes and a helmet, only a few lifetime good riders might have skill to pull off no brakes, but those people make the newbie retards think they have to go brakeless and they have no skill for that. Your just perpetuating dangerous situations to entry level cyclists. and honestly its just suicide. i just bought a cannondale capo single speed and im leaving both brakes on and frewheel if i go fixed ill leav them 2
@dorielementary how is it any more retarded than every other fad in the world?? There must be something you do that other people would call 'retarded' so dont go bashing shit people enjoy just because you dont dig it
fixes and track ridinges are totally diferen style. ficies are mostly for street and trick but track are for keirin and timetrail. the key for track riders are they xplotion power of peddling speed and stamina. but its all come to a conclusion to you body fitness and your diet. rememebr the sayin " the only trick on a track bicycle are going fast"
single speed with front brakes > fixed gear w/ no brakes.....why? I can go much faster and I have more control over the whole bike without trying to be cool w/ the in-crowd fags.
Most good messengers are on auto-pilot- riding according to the "chi" of the cityscape. This skill is honed and refined over time. I ride w/ brake coz of my mtb background/ exp of locking up the rear on trails- NOT cool! Wonder if the track pros ride fixed on the asphalt??
@voodoolives1 i ride a trake bike to work everyday through city trafic and iam cool with it , just depending on who you ride .. if you ride seserble you will be fine but if you try to be fast all the time you will end up in the hospital. just have to ride smart no matter what 2 wheels you on .
Before someone goes off on me I'd like to repeat that under a good rider a fixie is perfectly safe, but it will never be as safe as a freewheel with brakes, in the city of course.
Riding fixed, rather than the bike accomodating to your prefered cadence (as with geared bikes) you must modify your cadence to the gear ratio. You lose the mechanical advantage of having gears but gain the direct transfer of power into your ped stroke.. direct-drive baby!!
You can still stand and mash up hills. Get some padded bike shorts for relief. Fixies are great commuters for short to med trips (up to 30kms for where i live) Save the 100k for the geared road bikes. Some say the kms you put into a fixie is 2-3 times the value of geared bikes
im not sure if i shoudl get a fixed gear or a single speed, because i liek the idea of the pedals continuosly going around , but like if i was to take a bend to sharp then the pedal would hit the group and then throw me off the bike, which obv doesnt sound so good (N) so shall i get a single speed or a fixed gear ? can someone get back to me on this please ? thank you
a fixie for me is very practical i put atleast 30 miles a day on my bike and no its not hard standing up and pumping everywhere i have bigger legs than all the bikers here in bend oregon i love it theyre simple economic practical and most of all cool
I know nothing about bikes but I want to get one. I love the stripped down look of a fixed gear bike and the idea of "feeling the pavement in the pedals". What freaks me out is the fact that you can't stand on a fixie -how do riders get around that? Is it just something they deal with? What about biking more than a couple miles? It seems having to sit and pump the entire time would be a real pain in the ass (literally). Any input?
Fixies aren't any faster than geared bikes. A guy on a geared bike can push a lot harder and go a lot faster on his smallest cog and biggest chain ring because fixies typically go for an intermediate sized cog for versatility.
i hate to side with fixed gear, but your statement isn't entirely true. a fixed gear will always trump a geared bike when it comes to torque being applied to the drivetrain. yes, a geared bike will outrun a fixed gear, but a fixed gear will always be more efficient at sprinting off the line or even, up a hill.
Fixies are absolutely more efficient *given identical cog to chainring ratios.* If you only ever sprint, stop, sprint, stop, you could beat a freewheeler doing the same thing.
But then... so what? Once you hit top speed for your ability, and road conditions, the fixie is done. The freewheeler still has options.
If we skew the test to favor the fixie (track race), you can say the fixie was "faster," but the win is based on acceleration, not speed.
ooooooo.........aaaaaaahhhhh......fixed gear culture. y'know, i have several friends that ride fixed gear, and more power to them to do what they want; velodrome culture is so magical, etc. etc.. however, i was crossing the street one day, on my NOT fixed gear bike, it was MY light to go and i was almost taken out by one these "fixie" dickholes cuz he wanted to run the red, probably cuz he didn't feel like skidding to a stop or slowing down. if you people only hit nothing but walls n cars.
I agree that some fixed riders have a death wish which is a shame for the rest of us riding safe and havin fun... however i contest the fixed conversion (sui hub) is dangerous though- its more media hype/ bad press myth than anything! As long as you take into account all the variables its safe!
I completely agree. Fixie's, obviously with no brakes, are completely unsafe in real-world conditions piloted by real-world people, not the crazy riders and messengers you see pull stunt after stunt. Really, do you see more bad riders, of any type of biking, than good riders on YouTube? No.
Fixie's are cool, but when a car pulls out in front of you entirely without warning you need brakes or you die in my experience, unless you're Chris Hoy and can skid a fixie on a dime, but you're not.
if everyone was supposed to shut the fuck up then there really wouldn't be much of a comment section on youtube now would there?....how about u shut the fuck up next time cuz all ur comment says to me is "i'm a prick"
You are assuming that these hipsters would take the tires and recycle them. Some how I don't see hipsters as the environmental bunch. And besides it's reduce, reuse then recycle. Why not reduce waste by not generating them in the first place? I'm against cars too and bicycles are more environmentally friendly hands down. I'm just saying that it's stupid to skid so you have to throw out a tire every 2 weeks. That practice is not very environmentally friendly now is it?
I ride both unicycle and bike trials so don't talk to me about control. If they are going to do shit like that go to where there are no cars, not in the middle of a busy road with cars and pedestrians. They look like clowns trying to catch attention. And to the previous comment about this being a good trend and for the environment. News flash. These idiots go through tires every 2 weeks. How environmentally friendly is that? How many tires do they use in a year? You do the math.
the arguement about the tires are fucked up!! Don't argument for cars... cus.. you can't do that?! Cars are fucked up.. bikes are enviromentally friendly? Thats it
many, if not most bicycle tires are recycled and made into something new. So are car tires. The argument that bicyclists use up more rubber than cars is ridiculous. First off, bike tires don't have NEARLY as much rubber as car tires do, obviously, and only have 2 of them. How many tires do cars use a year? Do that math. Plus, bikes are way more environmentally friendly due to the fact that they don't pollute at all!
diamondbac...do you even realize the amount of control you have on a fixed gear? or are you just sick of getting shown up by kids that aren't riding a..um..diamondback?
"I can't brake" will be the last thought on these retards' mind as they hit the back of a bus. Seriously the cars and motorbikes should cream these assholes playing on a busy street. One of them nearly hit a motor bike head on. "Cool" is always doing something rebellious and stupid that the majority of society can't understand.
I love these bikes they're fun, they're responsive and yes...cool. But a word to the wise, PUT BRAKES ON YOUR BIKE! There's somehow a stigma attached to putting one on or like you have no balls. Don't wait till a car plows into you to realize there's nothing cool about losing control or your bike.
@hairygorillaass yea I live in San Francisco and I can't believe people actually go brakeless. Our hills are killer, just asking for it. If I ever convert to fixie, Id have at least one brake on it -_-
@LittoBUbbo Mash Sf guys and Macaframa's crew going brakeless is fine i think cause they are masters of skid (see it for yourself) but newbies going brakeless are absolute dipshit , atleast use Straps for skidding but they wont do it...
@R4pidSh0t Yea... and you could also say that the pros in skateboarding could probably go down a half pipe with out falling over. But still, they wear helmets and they still fall. Fun is great and being good at it is great, just if I see people going brakeless down steep slopes in SF with no brakes and there is traffic turning, that is just really stupid.
@R4pidSh0t i agree and i agree from experience two days after i learnd how to skid i got hit by a car cuase i could kick back the pedal or get into a balanced skid
the way the dress is just the indie subculture in america today. it's been here for about what going on a decade almost. My math maybe wrong but it's just whats "cool" right now. hay they made skateboarding fun and popular and next we have the fucking fixed gear.
I honestly don't understand how this is cool to some people. If you want to pedal around the city, get a commuter or road bike. If you want to do flatland tricks, get a BMX. The one guy actually trying flatland in the video wasn't anywhere near impressive. Track bikes and velodrome riders are cool though. The worst part about fixies? The clothes. Tight pants worn too low... dude, that's just gross. I don't even want to see a girl dress like that. I can't wait for this to be over...
why fixed gear though? why not just single speed? The last thing poor folks need is not being able to stop while approaching an intersection at the bottom of a hill...
Yawn. Most fixie riders have already tried all freewheel bike types including bmx and racers. Freewheel is just plain boring, the fixed gear drive makes everything so much more fun. This will never be over. By the way, what kind of man cares about how other men dresses?
This mite sound racist but its true; asian people make things trendy and shitty: Steve Aoki=Shitty trend hipster faggot sucks at DJing and the majority of asians i see riding fixies are gay hypebeast kids who drive their bikes to some parking lot to practice riding in backward circles with their deep v's matching their FRESH kicks. To any legit asians out there it is not I who is racially judging it is them making the name, and U are the ones who can shephard the sheep back to the computer
yr either insecure, just stoic and mundane, or in denial; This sort of cynical self righteous stating of the obvious regarding an internet troll... Seems like something an ASIAN HIPSTR FAGGOT WOULD DO
fuck you BITCH.... you're trolling the internet too!... and obviously find false security in it....if you said that shit to me on the street I would beat your fuckin ass you racist homophobic piece of shit!!!
Actually if you saw me on the street you would probably covet the hiptacity of my hip hipster style and want me to penetr8 yr damp throbbing rectum joyfully; being that you are a asian hipster faggit.

I can't wait for this to be over...

haha I love riding my fixies, but I agree with everything you said!!
them tight pants?blaaaaaaaah

why fixed gear though? why not just single speed? The last thing poor folks need is not being able to stop while approaching an intersection at the bottom of a hill...

well I do have a brake in the front, and i dont care what anyone says...safety comes first!
fixed gear really really gives you feed back on absolutely everything.
You will even learn to peddle more efficiently.
Highly recommend you to give it a try.

A mite is a small, invertebrate parasite bug, often undetected by spellcheck.
A semicolon is an archaic form of punctuation.
Babiesdie is a racist, homophobic cunt who ought consider grammatical tutoring and/or retroactive abortion.

yr either insecure, just stoic and mundane, or in denial; This sort of cynical self righteous stating of the obvious regarding an internet troll... Seems like something an ASIAN HIPSTR FAGGOT WOULD DO
babiesdie 3 years ago
fuck you BITCH.... you're trolling the internet too!... and obviously find false security in it....if you said that shit to me on the street I would beat your fuckin ass you racist homophobic piece of shit!!!
baileynoodles 3 years ago
Actually if you saw me on the street you would probably covet the hiptacity of my hip hipster style and want me to penetr8 yr damp throbbing rectum joyfully; being that you are a asian hipster faggit.
babiesdie 3 years ago
the funny thing is that I'm NOT Asian nor a faggot...I'm just a normal guy that thinks you're a piece of shit thats all... I hope you die soon
