I used to have a BMX with no brakes, and another with the pedal brakes, back when I was 10. Some of these are fun. I'd get one, but with bigger tires and at least one brake. Still don't like the fad though. especially those with the "loteria" cards in the spokes, pussy pads, pedal straps, ridiculous colors/handle bars, and having to straddle the frame to skid, (pansies). It's like they're the new two wheel ricers.

No problem having a little fun with a bike, I like my cannondale to look cool too, but I'm not about to put baseball cards in the spokes or streamers on the handlebars.  They can even leave the brakes off if they want but not me, I had a front brake fail on my old lugged steel road bike and I was very relieved to have a second brake instead of careening into a ditch at 50 kph in the rain.

@mavdj Pedal Straps Are important for Fixed gears , Because skidding in slow speeds without straps are hard enough , let alone at High Speeds.... , while Toe-clips , are ideal to use at high speed but doesnt really help when you want to Mid-Skid....

Riding fixed, rather than the bike accomodating to your prefered cadence (as with geared bikes) you must modify your cadence to the gear ratio. You lose the mechanical advantage of having gears but gain the direct transfer of power into your ped stroke.. direct-drive baby!!

I know nothing about bikes but I want to get one. I love the stripped down look of a fixed gear bike and the idea of "feeling the pavement in the pedals". What freaks me out is the fact that you can't stand on a fixie -how do riders get around that? Is it just something they deal with? What about biking more than a couple miles? Fixies aren't any faster than geared bikes. A guy on a geared bike can push a lot harder and go a lot faster on his smallest cog and biggest chain ring because fixies typically go for an intermediate sized cog for versatility.

i hate to side with fixed gear, but your statement isn't entirely true. a fixed gear will always trump a geared bike when it comes to torque being applied to the drivetrain. yes, a geared bike will outrun a fixed gear, but a fixed gear will always be more efficient at sprinting off the line or even, up a hill.

Fixies are absolutely more efficient *given identical cog to chainring ratios.* If you only ever sprint, stop, sprint, stop, you could beat a freewheeler doing the same thing.

But then... so what? Once you hit top speed for your ability, and road conditions, the fixie is done. The freewheeler still has options.

If we skew the test to favor the fixie (track race), you can say the fixie was "faster," but the win is based on acceleration, not speed.

First off, bike tires don't have NEARLY as much rubber as car tires do, obviously, and only have 2 of them. How many tires do cars use a year? Do that math.
