Hey, just got my first ice skates (=D!) but they havent been ground yet. When i take them to be ground, what grade do i ask for? What grade would be good for me? I can already ice skate confidently but im no Dan Perceval =p
hahaha that's pretty sweet, it's a nice looking paintjob, i might do mine with blue now. what kinda marker did you use cause i can still see the "pump" text, does it resist fading?
Whatever you do, don't use blue. My friend did that and it looked like crap. Blue doesn't go well against white unless you can find a light blue marker. You have to use a permanent marker. But it will still fade over 2-3 months.
would figure skates or hockey skates be better for someone just wanting to skate recreationally? and how come some skates have jagged points at the front of the blade and some are just curved? Does this make a big difference? sorry for all the questions :P
Hockey skates are better for recreational use because the toe picks are annoying in figure skates. Some recreational skates have toe picks because they try to simulate figure skates. Some recreational ice-skates don't because they try to simulate hockey skates. Yes, there is a big difference because of how much you can lean forward without toe pick getting in the way. Also, the blade is curved differently. It has a different "rocker", which will give you a different center of balance.
hey man i need help..i had my old skates that arent sharp a lot :S and i was like really good with em at hockey stoping on the side(quick stoping you know what i mean) and i got new ones like real hockey skates..and they are sharp a LOT!! and i really cant glide at all so now when i try to stop i go forwoard and fall on my back...can you help mee? :D
You can either adjust your balance by leaning by more during your stop and get used to the sharpening that you have on your skates (whichever that is), or you can get your skate resharpening and ask for 1/2" hollow of radius. If that's too dull, than ask for a 7/16" hollow of radius.
cheers, am looking to buy some ice skates i used to roller skate back as a kid...but fancy trying ice skating just not sure on what boot would suite me.
Hey Dan, I love your vids. I'm super appreciative that you posted these up - I've been skating for the last 20-some years and with your vids I am still learning some good tips. You're a phenomenal skater.
Which leads me to what I thought was interesting to share. The rink that is pictured at the 0:26 mark. It's the rink at West Edmonton Mall. It is the rink where I took my first lessons! Way back around 1983! It's where I fell in love with ice skating.
What are your views on the vapor 40 Dan? I've just ordered a pair because all the reviews and forums say how great they are...in fact I can't find a bad review. But you're always in 9ks (are the white ones new by the way)? My friend had heard some bad reviews about the pumps popping with Reeboks? Is it just a preference for brand as you've tested them over the years or what? Another good video by the way!
The pumps break on me all the time. The white ones are new. I choose 9k's because they have a very solid boot. I recently talked to someone with the vapor 40's. He liked them. I forgot why though. I tested the boot. Same boot strength as the 9k's. Other than that, I don't know. If you buy them, let me know what you think (especially in regards to stiffness).
o also if the hockey skate only hockey skate is stiff then you go to your ice rink and they will bake it for you
