Fantastic news - climate-wrecking plans for a third runway at Heathrow airport have been axed!
The new Cameron/Clegg government has confirmed that it will not only scrap the third runway at Heathrow, but also refuse additional runways at Gatwick and Stansted. So all our campaigning has finally won out - and a huge thank you is due to everyone who's written to their MP or taken part in one of the many protests demanding that the plan be shelved.

Airports scare the shit out of me. The last thing I'd want to do is fuck around with airport security. After 9/11, the amount of armed (full automatic weapons) being carried around.
It just takes one of them to call you a 'suspect' and poof: You're fucked.
Why stop airport expansion? Air travel is an efficient way to get around and while it is kind of polluting, it is not nearly as bad as all the cars and factories. I don't see the case against airport expansion at all...Makes no sense to me, please explain.
Dude it makes total sense, there's shedloads of information out there if you bothered to inform yourself - go to the Greenpeace UK website and type 'aviation expansion' into the search box for starters. Aviation is the fastest growing source of CO2 emissions at a time when we're committing to reduce our total CO2 output by 80% by 2050, plus it puts CO2 right where we don't want it - 30,000 ft up, plus the biggest growth area is short haul flights, whose capacity could be handled by trains...
I agree. High speed rail should be the option with only 1/4 emission of aviation. Yet, Heathrow is really clogged up. Air traffic controls use all measures like landing stacks and "Heathrow minute" takeoff measures to keep up to the schedule. As the world's busiest int'l airport, it must be eased.
If we were wiped of the face of the earth tomorrow there would be no difference to climate change. Infact I don't think reducing our emisions will even help because nobody actually cares about the environment, they just say they do! Only greenpeace and that care and they have little power over everyone else.

Strangely enough, not true. I've been looking into the research and apparently climate change is real. Turns out that it's you who are the myth, mate.
It also turns out that you are a closet vegetarian yourself, surprise, surprise...
By god, I wish the police had arrested the whole damn lot of them, there must be some arcane law to stop these middle-class interfering weirdo's who get FAR too much press attention as it is.....
Absolutely, damn timewasting scum. I mean it's not as if they are trying to do anything useful like persuade us to take action on the single biggest crisis we face while there is still time, fo example. They just stand around, wasting their valuable spare time trying to get their pictures in the paper just for the hell of it. Never mind arrests - hanging's too good for 'em. They should be more like you Fascist7896 - noble, thoughtful, intelligent - willing to make sacrifices for the common good.
"Single biggest crisis we face"? And there was little me thinking that was the economic downturn and the energy gap, not the supposed AGW crisis, which is the biggest orchestrated scam in living memory (but not a crisis because sea ice is at normal levels and global temps are cooling). Oh silly me I forgot we're not meant to mention that, these middle class twerps DO have a god-given right to dictate to everyone else....
You're right BTW to recognise the contribution of those who do try and warn of this scam:-) Seriously though, you lot are probably the biggest crisis facing this country. Your propaganda, if successful, will derail the economy and destroy many peoples hard work, under an avelanche of punitive taxes and crazy schemes. You claim to be moderate, but it won't stop until everyone (bar greens who 'need' their 4x4's) is walking and all dissent dealt with harshly. Hitler seemed moderate at first....
Wow, Fascist7896, you really win the prize for getting hold of the wrong end of the stick and beating about the bush with it.I'm not a climate scientist, but I have enough respect for scientific method to respect the conclusions of those who are - and they believe man-made global warming is changing the climate by a factor of about 9 to 1, and have produced 100s of peer-reviewed papers to that effect. You, however, obviously know better - the whole thing's a scam designed simply to piss you off.
I have no problem with environmentalism per-se, years with BTCV and Bat groups testify to this, only with a bunch of idle, hypocritical bourgeois who seek to dictate to the majority. Not only that but also suppress any debate and discredit any evidence which contradicts their own supposedly impeccable sources. There are many respected scientists who say AGW is hogwash, but they rarely receive publicity, in fact their info is suppressed, why is this? (Answer: people who stand to make a fast buck)
What evidence would that be Fascist7987 - the Great Global Warming Swindle, I suppose? For those with a more open mind than this joker, check out the latest from the Tyndall Centre for climate research (a consortium of UK Universities including Manchester, Oxford, Newcastle, E Anglia, Sussex and Southampton. Their take on the 3rd runway?
"It is difficult to underestimate the impact this single decision will have not only on the UKs greenhouse gas emissions, ...
...If aviation emissions in 2050 will be no more than they were 2005 (as announced today by the Transport Secretary) then by 2050 the aviation sector will consume all of the UK's permitted carbon budget" - Professor Kevin Anderson
Truth is we can't carry on expanding aviation and pumping out CO2 from coal-fired power stations without making this world an inceasingly uncomfortable/impossible place for us to live in - almost certainly within our lifetimes. It really is that serious.
Seeing as there is actually no concensus as to whether CO2 is a cause or consequence of warming, there's precious little to worry about. Only those with vested interests say its definitely a cause, whereas in fact no-one really knows, this is the great truth Greenies don't want you to hear... The hockey stick has dropped away, sea levels and sea ice levels remain within norms, nothing is happening, and still people pump out this pseudo-scientific propaganda, this begs the question - why?
"Seeing as there is actually no concensus as to whether CO2" - science is about research - postulating a hypothesis and then testing it against the facts available. It's for this reason that science never 'proves' anything - all it does is indicate probabilities. The probability that man-made global warming is the cause of climate change is, as you can easily check via web searches, extremely high. High enough for most reasonable people to accept - which they do. You don't. Big deal - so what?

If ever there was a specious argument, its that above, would you choose to fly to the moon if a body of scientists said there was a strong possibility it was there? Well you might, but the rest of us would wait until it was proven, and we certainly wouldn't spend billions building the rocket in case the moon did exist... As a Darwinist, I see my position on that issue attacked with same kind of zealotry you display here. (Kudos at least due to you for actually almost debating the issue)
As a Darwinist you ought to have at least a basic understanding of scientific method, and to know that no theory can ever be proved, only falsified (see Karl Popper). Climate change is a theory - it's the best theory we have at the moment based on the available evidence - enough evidence to act on. So is Darwinism - a theory I happen to adhere to again because it fits the known facts. & thanks for your half-assed compliment about debating - just wish I had someone worth debating with.

Here's the problem - no one but idiots and hippies give a shit about global warming.
Governments are taxing through the arse for no reason. Huge car tax because my car pollutes more? If we're destroying the planet, and they genuinely believe it, then why not invest heavily in fuel cell cars, and get them on every street now, rather than wait 10 years?
China is coming, and it'll dwarf the combined population of the USA and Europe.
If we have to do something, then lets plan for the fallout.

Scientists aren't going to save the world. They could all agree about climate change, but would it make the slightest difference?
If anything is to be done, the entire world population has to be convinced, and having a bunch of twats in government who simply see this as another way to tax us isn't going to convince anyone.
Perhaps you should your head out of your ass and realise that there is no chance of us stopping any climate change. One thing we can do is plan for a worst case scenario
It is a big deal when certain factions try to dictate to the rest of society, and indeed whole countries (China, India), what they must do based upon an unproven scientific hypothesis. For thats all it is at the moment, an equally strong body of evidence says otherwise. To then present this hypothesis as fact is grossly misleading, and aligned with the gross hypocrisy displayed by some of your celebrity supporters its really no wonder people are sceptical...?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Furthermore, who is to say AGW isn't an elaborate plot to prevent or stall the rise of the NIC's, and / or cover-up the energy crisis? Similar scams have worked in the past (e.g: Star Wars/SDI). The Governments actions would suggest that despite what they say, they're not over-concerned about AGW. China certainly isn't bothered at all, its planning an 8.5% increase in air traffic p.a for the next 20 years.....
Gosh, you really are easily taken in, the key is never to believe one thing you read, but a variety of sources, thus helping you reach a reasoned conclusion. The pro-AGW scientists are just well paid lobbyists, adding some credence to vested interests, just as many of the anti-AGW think-tanks are. Just because a scientist is pro-AGW doesn't make him/her or unbuyable. Who funds them? Why is Al Gore making millions from the carbon credit company he happens to own?
Oh right, ignore the guys from reputable universities all across the UK - serious scientists (all paid lobbyists - no, unlike the Exxon think tank dudes) - and construct some bizarre fantasy that it's all a plot by the already loaded Al Gore to make yet more money. Hate to resort to abuse, but you really are a pathetic twat, aren't you?

HEATHROW NEEDS A 3RD RUNWAY, your stupid hippies dont know what you are talking about, and also a 3rd runway could create 1000s more jobs for people, buying land to stop baa building, its called compulsory purchase you idiots!
Ok, being as you're obviously a bit mentally challenged, I'll keep this simple. No one is suggesting ALL flying stops, but we can't keep expanding aviation at the rate we have been without screwing the climate (and our own lives). It's like killing yourself by overeating - the cure is NOT to never eat again, just to eat less, and more sensibly. Get the idea?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh yeah? Thats only the first step with you lot, once you get a foot in the door, we'll be back to walking everywhere and never travelling more than 25 miles before you can say 'eco-fascist flash-mob'. (Apart of course from Greenies who will drive their Land Rovers to the airport before flying to Guatemala for some hippy ego-trip. The real green ethos is do as we say not as we do - hypocrisy at its finest!
What a stupid load of f**king tree hugging hippies! The UK economy needs aviation, and you'll all be dead by the time the climate changes for the worst anyway!!! I love my job as Cabin Crew and without Heathrow expansion the future of airlines expanding is bleak. Can't wait for the 3rd runway!!!
Aviation is an increasing contributor to the UK's CO2 output, and planes' CO2 emissions in the air carry a further forcing factor due to the height at which they are emitted. As we cut our carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 aviation growth will grow to over 50% of our CO2 output - which is totally unsustainable, so we need to drastically cut back on short-haul flights. The dangers are real and obvious - we have to be sensible enough to adopt the precautionary principle, otherwise we risk disaster.
If you drive your average car the 400 miles from London to Glasgow you will use the same amount of fuel (on a per passenger basis) as if you flew there. However, when you buy the petrol you pay around 80% of the price at the pump for tax of one sort or another. If you fly your airline pays no tax on aviation fuel, which is odd, because the petrol you use emits its carbon dioxide at low levels,, whereas the carbon emissions from aircraft are...
... at high levels where they are thought to be twice as potent, in greenhouse gas terms.
So by building more airports we are not only creating great environmental damage but we are subsiding air travellers in ways that the fuel poor and the public transport user can only dream of.
Therefore it is clear that we should not encourage flying by building another runway but we should ensure that flying is as economical and as efficient as possible in terms of its emissions.
In response to 'SayYesToLHRExpansion' - it's highly debatable what expansion brings to the economy. But regardless to the economy, it's expansion at this particular airport, given how densely populated this area is, that causes much concern. Perhaps it's time you gave some thought the the quality of life of the millions living in this area, rather than your cosy little cabin job sucking the captain's cock.
This isn't a flash mob. Flash mobs are supposed to blend in with the crowd, do something crazy for no reason, then leave quickly. These people are just plain old protesters.
charliecharlieee/nilsette - who do you guys think you are - the self appointed flash mob police? What's it to you what these guys call themselves - don't take yourselves so seriously...
The obvious answer to Airport congestion is to build bigger and better airports, a third and then a fourth runway at Heathrow would be a good start.
Nobody should listen to the hypocritical hippies of Greenpeace and Plane Stupid, what they are against is cheap air travel, not air travel per se. These middle class tarquins hate the fact he ordinary joes can drive cars and fly to places. Its nothing to do with environmentalism, its all to do with snobbery and keeping plebs in their proper place
Wow I am so pleased to read this. I cannot stand Tarquin and Fiona either, with little Barnaby and Hattie in the back of their 4x4 going down the re-cycling bins as a family outing either.
Message to all Tarquins and Fionas; Please use your inherited money to greater effect and stop your hypocritical preaching.
In case you haven't seen it, Bob Ayling wrote a piece for The Sunday Times (4th May) titled 'Third runway is a flight of fallacy' in which he comprehensively demolishes all the arguments for Runway 3, one after another. He describes the plan as 'a classic exercise in misguided central planning' explains how the 'hub-and spoke' model has fuelled the number of passengers using Heathrow...
... increasing congestion and allowing small problems to mushroom into long delays as the airport handles 68m passengers a year using buildings and baggage systems designed to handle 45m.
Ayling reckons even with a 3rd runway Heathrow will be full again within a decade, and has no chance of coping with the projected 135m passengers a year and 702,000 flights after 2030. But then again what does he know? He's only the former Chief Exec of British Airways.
er Jordan... why don't you actually watch the vid before you jump in and start shooting your mouth off? It was a peaceful, legal protest. Nobody broke the the law, nobody was arrested, no travellers inconvenienced etc.
What a bunch of British peoples why do they want to stop the airport expansion? What for??? Look, it good to expand the Terminal 5 to help relieve congestion to reduce delay that is good.. But existing terminal 1,2,3 is among the worst bad traffic congestion, other terminal 4 is normal fine.. So what it not worth important to say "STOP THE AIRPORT EXPANSION"
Not a real flash mob just a mob of dimwits who should be named and listed to stop them flying out of anywhere. Every airport is an expansion of an airfield and every port is an expansion of a harbour, sheep - repeaters
Greenpeace is a shambolic properganderist group full of students looking for a meaning to life and full of old folk with the attiutude either of "not on my doorstep" or "I've nalt else better to do" as seen in the above video. If yougave both points of view and why yours was better and also targetted the right place at the right time you get more people in support. as for crowding people going on holiday and taking a jet out of service for your own gain you deserve chinning
Hey chris - your comment is ignorant, ill-informed and full of ill-will. It says a lot more about you than it does about the Terminal 5 flash mob folks - ordinary people who gave up their time and made the effort to make a protest on what's likely to be the most significant issue of our time.
Fair comment - My biggest issue of the moment is how to get to Rawalpindi to watch England in the ICC champions trophy in September for less than £700. I find that I am becoming victim of greenpeace. I still standby my comments that its full of people with no direction and "not on my doorstep". You'd have a lot more sympathy if you change your attidues and focus. Good luck
- Producing cement and concrete generates slightly more CO2 than aviation
- Producing the electricity to power the machines that made the red t-shirts, the internet, the video camera battery, the computer you're using to respond to these comments etc generates about 80% of carbon emissions in the UK
I'm committed to reducing CO2 but to keep panning aviation time and time again is pointless.
are all the green brigade going to stop going on trendy trips to South America trekking etc? I mean they have to have that Observer lifestyle.
The day they give up flying TOTALLY is the day they might be able to have a valid argument. As it is this is just jumping on trendy bandwagons for middle class quasi Tories.
Talking of valid arguments, you've just committed the fallacies of tu quoque, ad hominem (including poisoning the well), and loaded question. All in <60 words - well done!
Ouch Chris - your brilliantly incisive comment has completely destroyed the logic of the argument against airport expansion! Do you think we should give people a big pat on the back next time they jet off to Prague (or Rome or Barcelona) for that seventh well-earned long-weekend of the year to a short-haul destination. Seriously - nobody is asking for flying to end - just that it pays the real cost of the damage it's inflicting, and that we don't fly when there's a practical alternative.
Having read your comment how would you achieve the industry paying the real cost? and how does protesting against runway expansion fit with this argument?
There's not the space here to go into great detail, but please visit greenpeace (dot)org(dot)uk/climate/aviation (and assorted links) for our solutions. Simply put though, making aviation pay the true cost of the fuel it uses and the pollution it creates would go a long way to restricting the rate at which it's expanding. And you do that by passing laws to that effect and enforcing them.
er, self-evident, I would have thought. A 3rd runway at Heathrow will inevitably lead to increased air traffic, more CO2 pollution etc. As we know from decades of road building - new roads stimulate traffic growth. The estimated impact in this case is a 70% increase in flight numbers - totally unnecessary when almost 25% of current flights from Heathrow are to destinations less than 500 km away which are already well served by train.
Quote "Seriously - nobody is asking for flying to end - just that it pays the real cost of the damage it's inflicting, and that we don't fly when there's a practical alternative"
So on one had you are saying the above and that doing this will go a long way to restricting the rate at which it is expanding, and on the other you are saying you are against expansion full stop so which is it?
I agree more should be done to explore alternative forms of travel such as the train but the way to encourage people to use these (and therefore reduce the need for runway expantions) is not to protest against expansion but to lobby for subsidized rail travel and/or increased taxation on short flights therefore making the alternative to flying more attractive. If flying is the quickest, cheapest and most convenient form of transportation people will always choose it 3rd runway or not!!!
"If flying is the quickest, cheapest and most convenient form of transportation people will always choose it 3rd runway or not!!!"
Only because the market is rigged in favour of flying. If you had to pay the true cost of a short-haul flight then it would start to look a lot less attractive as an option. And convenient? Not sure that many people passing through Heathrow (particularly Terminal 5 at the moment) would agree...
Can you explain how a market as competitive as travel is "rigged in favor of flying?
Market forces determine the price of any travel ticket, and the only way to encourage people to use less polluting forms of transport is to make them more attractive both in price and speed. In a free market the best product at the lowest price invariably gets the largest market share. So the answer is not to protest against expansion but to lobby for better/cheaper (government subsidized?) alternatives.
It was a great event, we need to keep up the pressure. The govornment is acting like a schizophrenic talking about carbon cuts and building runways, roads, coal fired power...
I have to say I feel sorry for the passengers in the terminal, If any of these protesters have ever flown on holiday they are hypocrites and had I been a passenger and their actions from this, or any other protest had impacted on my hard earned holiday I would have certainly made my feelings known in the strongest possible terms.
1. Wanting to stop airport expansion and flying are simply not contradictory.
2. This event was at international arrivals. We didnt cause futher problems for passengers. BA annoyed a lot of people with baggage handling failures but that wasnt our fault!
3. Flying is the most environmentally distructive thing you can do and is certainly causing more damage to the poorest int the world who are dependent on the land for their food. That is seriously immoral.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Point 2. is erroneous I didn't say that this protest impacted on passengers I wasn't there so I wouldn't know if it did or didn't I merely stated IF a protest impacted om MY holiday I would be pissed.
Point 1. most of the protests are against the expansion of Heathrow on environmental grounds and therefore against flying full stop this also appears to be your view reading point 3 so therefore my assertion stands.
Point 3 I don't/can't disagree because I haven't seen the evidence either way, I think the key to reducing air travel is increased use of technology such as video conferencing etc. I don't think this scatter gun approach taken by Greenpeace and other such groups is the answer especially if it impacts on people who, lets face it are just going on holiday or doing business.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
environmentalists.. a bunch of idealists who have wild ambitions of making this world a better place without realising the possible challenges and consequences
robbutch84 - given that this protest was against runway 3, rather than terminal 5, the sad irony is that your comment may well be true but not in the way you meant it. If runaway climate change is indeed now well and truly run away, we're all done for. Lets just hope that, whilst T5 may be out the stable door and over the hill, R3 (and Stansted 2) can still be safely bolted away in time.
I'm totally aginst the expansion at heathrow, the airport as is fine as it is, cut things like using big jumbo jets for internal uk flights and slash cheap fligt deals available to things like E.U destinations. Thing with protesters is same as terroists, government won't give in. The planet is already overheating and we don't need more planes at this present time. When you protest make sure police are also out numbered as much as possible, harder for them to stop everyone.

Fantastic7896 3 years ago
Wow, Fascist7896, you really win the prize for getting hold of the wrong end of the stick and beating about the bush with it.I'm not a climate scientist, but I have enough respect for scientific method to respect the conclusions of those who are - and they believe man-made global warming is changing the climate by a factor of about 9 to 1, and have produced 100s of peer-reviewed papers to that effect. You, however, obviously know better - the whole thing's a scam designed simply to piss you off.
motherlodeuk 3 years ago
I have no problem with environmentalism per-se, years with BTCV and Bat groups testify to this, only with a bunch of idle, hypocritical bourgeois who seek to dictate to the majority. Not only that but also suppress any debate and discredit any evidence which contradicts their own supposedly impeccable sources. There are many respected scientists who say AGW is hogwash, but they rarely receive publicity, in fact their info is suppressed, why is this? (Answer: people who stand to make a fast buck)

What evidence would that be Fascist7987 - the Great Global Warming Swindle, I suppose? ...If aviation emissions in 2050 will be no more than they were 2005 (as announced today by the Transport Secretary) then by 2050 the aviation sector will consume all of the UK's permitted carbon budget" - Professor Kevin Anderson
Truth is we can't carry on expanding aviation and pumping out CO2 from coal-fired power stations without making this world an inceasingly uncomfortable/impossible place for us to live in - almost certainly within our lifetimes. It really is that serious.
motherlodeuk 3 years ago
Seeing as there is actually no concensus as to whether CO2 is a cause or consequence of warming, there's precious little to worry about. Only those with vested interests say its definitely a cause, whereas in fact no-one really knows, this is the great truth Greenies don't want you to hear... The hockey stick has dropped away, sea levels and sea ice levels remain within norms, nothing is happening, and still people pump out this pseudo-scientific propaganda, this begs the question - why?
fantastic7897 3 years ago

(Kudos at least due to you for actually almost debating the issue)
fantastic7897 3 years ago

Furthermore, who is to say AGW isn't an elaborate plot to prevent or stall the rise of the NIC's, and / or cover-up the energy crisis? Similar scams have worked in the past (e.g: Star Wars/SDI). The Governments actions would suggest that despite what they say, they're not over-concerned about AGW. China certainly isn't bothered at all, its planning an 8.5% increase in air traffic p.a for the next 20 years.....
fantastic7897 3 years ago

SayYesToLHRExpansion 3 years ago
GreenpeaceUK 3 years ago
If you drive your average car the 400 miles from London to Glasgow you will use the same amount of fuel (on a per passenger basis) as if you flew there. However, when you buy the petrol you pay around 80% of the price at the pump for tax of one sort or another. If you fly your airline pays no tax on aviation fuel, which is odd, because the petrol you use emits its carbon dioxide at low levels,, whereas the carbon emissions from aircraft are...
motherlodeuk 3 years ago
... at high levels where they are thought to be twice as potent, in greenhouse gas terms.
So by building more airports we are not only creating great environmental damage but we are subsiding air travellers in ways that the fuel poor and the public transport user can only dream of.
Therefore it is clear that we should not encourage flying by building another runway but we should ensure that flying is as economical and as efficient as possible in terms of its emissions.
motherlodeuk 3 years ago
In response to 'SayYesToLHRExpansion' - it's highly debatable what expansion brings to the economy. But regardless to the economy, it's expansion at this particular airport, given how densely populated this area is, that causes much concern. Perhaps it's time you gave some thought the the quality of life of the millions living in this area, rather than your cosy little cabin job sucking the captain's cock.

He describes the plan as 'a classic exercise in misguided central planning' explains how the 'hub-and spoke' model has fuelled the number of passengers using Heathrow...
motherlodeuk 3 years ago 2
... increasing congestion and allowing small problems to mushroom into long delays as the airport handles 68m passengers a year using buildings and baggage systems designed to handle 45m.
Ayling reckons even with a 3rd runway Heathrow will be full again within a decade, and has no chance of coping with the projected 135m passengers a year and 702,000 flights after 2030. But then again what does he know? He's only the former Chief Exec of British Airways.

What a load of bollocks. Face facts Greenpeace:
- Producing cement and concrete generates slightly more CO2 than aviation
- Producing the electricity to power the machines that made the red t-shirts, the internet, the video camera battery, the computer you're using to respond to these comments etc generates about 80% of carbon emissions in the UK
I'm committed to reducing CO2 but to keep panning aviation time and time again is pointless.

GreenpeaceUK 3 years ago
Ok,
Having read your comment how would you achieve the industry paying the real cost? and how does protesting against runway expansion fit with this argument?
infrequentflyers 3 years ago
There's not the space here to go into great detail, but please visit greenpeace (dot)org(dot)uk/climate/aviation (and assorted links) for our solutions. Simply put though, making aviation pay the true cost of the fuel it uses and the pollution it creates would go a long way to restricting the rate at which it's expanding. And you do that by passing laws to that effect and enforcing them.
GreenpeaceUK 3 years ago
And the answer to my second question is?
infrequentflyers 3 years ago
er, self-evident, I would have thought.
GreenpeaceUK 3 years ago
Quote "Seriously - nobody is asking for flying to end - just that it pays the real cost of the damage it's inflicting, and that we don't fly when there's a practical alternative"
So on one had you are saying the above and that doing this will go a long way to restricting the rate at which it is expanding, and on the other you are saying you are against expansion full stop so which is it?
infrequentflyers 3 years ago
I agree more should be done to explore alternative forms of travel such as the train but the way to encourage people to use these (and therefore reduce the need for runway expantions) is not to protest against expansion but to lobby for subsidized rail travel and/or increased taxation on short flights therefore making the alternative to flying more attractive. If flying is the quickest, cheapest and most convenient form of transportation people will always choose it 3rd runway or not!!!
infrequentflyers 3 years ago
"If flying is the quickest, cheapest and most convenient form of transportation people will always choose it 3rd runway or not!!!"
Only because the market is rigged in favour of flying. If you had to pay the true cost of a short-haul flight then it would start to look a lot less attractive as an option. And convenient? Not sure that many people passing through Heathrow (particularly Terminal 5 at the moment) would agree...
GreenpeaceUK 3 years ago
Can you explain how a market as competitive as travel is "rigged in favor of flying?
Market forces determine the price of any travel ticket, and the only way to encourage people to use less polluting forms of transport is to make them more attractive both in price and speed. In a free market the best product at the lowest price invariably gets the largest market share. So the answer is not to protest against expansion but to lobby for better/cheaper (government subsidized?) alternatives.
