God I love this movie. I cant believe ANYONE can say that they didnt like it! Its the MARIO movie...WTF where they expeacting?a movie about a little short, high voiced, fat dude who constantly moves side ways and kills turtles just to hear "Sorry Mario, but our princess is in another castle" I am actually hoping to get a career in acting, and if I woke up one morning and it was 1993 and I found out that I played maybe just an extra in this movie, I would have thought I died and went to heaven.

@bwmcmaste Its not a masterpiece and I dont think anyone claims it to be, but if people(kids) stop comparing it to the game it can be very enjoyable as a "fun ride" of a movie. I saw this as a kid and it captivated my imagination and I loved the imaginative sets they used. Its very creative as a movie, is it a good "Mario" movie? Perhaps not, but its still fun and thats why I like it.

Even completely ignoring the fact that this is based on the Mario Bros. franchise--just looking at this film purely as a film, it's still not very good. The writing is indescribably terrible and the pacing is just bad. That's not to say this movie isn't completely not a joy to watch. The score is terrific and the acting, while cheesy, is always entertaining.

Glad to see I'm far from the only one who loves this movie. The only way it would suck is in the sense that nearly every movie would suck. Movies merely need a good concept and not too many white-knight-lines. The viewer can 'correct' any inconsistencies or bad acting in one's own mind, which is what I do with nearly every movie I watch, but that doesn't mean it can't be fun to watch anyway!

Set design = brilliant. Special effects = good for their time. Actors = capable, but uninspired. Screenwriting = pretty garbage. Still, this film has positive points. I'm a filmmaker and I study at film school, and I'm not a cinema snob. I enjoy parts of this film, though it's not great. Roland Joffe had something to do with it, so it couldn't have been a bad idea.

This movie isn't the best in my opinion but it definitely is entertaining.

But I'm pretty sure that what most people hate are the Goombas, and how they literally look nothing like what they're supposed to, but think about it. In the games, Goombas are just brown mushroom heads with feet. Back then, if someone tried to make a live action version of that, it would be goofy looking and not respectable. Hell even with today's CGI it wouldn't look right. So I guess it's a little imaginative with them

I was astonished when Mario's modern high-pitched voice "It'sa me Mario!" caught on in popularity. I never EVER pictured Mario with that sort of voice. I always imagined he had a bad ass throaty voice like Bob Hoskins's Mario with a Brooklyn accent. Even to this day, if I happen to think about Mario's voice, I imagine the Hoskins voice.

It's a fantastic film, I absolutely love it! Look at the tremendous prop and set design, it's basically "Cyberpunk Mario Bros."

The filmmakers had every right to take creative liberties, look at the game content. An hour and a half movie of Bob Hoskins eating mushrooms and jumping on turtles would have been a tragic disaster.

Just enjoy this movie on it's own merits knowing that it's a sort of nod to the spirit of Super Mario Bros.

This movie actually had some really clever concepts, and they made a good effort in combining the light hearted adventurous feel of the game with the epic scale of a motion picture, I can't really put my finger on exactally where it went wrong, but some how it just didn't quite come together in the end... I think it's because they tried to cram in too much, trying too hard to reference everything in the game etc. rather than spending more time on the good ideas they had.

You have to remember this is a game that is about a plumber who jumps through pipes and eats mushrooms and fights dragons. To make a film you have to adapt it the best way possible and to make the actual game into a movie would be near impossible. What they've done is create an altered world and used the characters - which is why it isn't as bad as what it seems. Sure, compared to the games, it's terrible as hell. But, as a sci-fi film, it's actually pretty fun. It's my opinion, anyways.

Bob is more likable in this movie than in any other movie I've seen with him including Roger Rabbit. He probably doesn't realize it. As far as reviews went, I think there was prejudice against the evolution story line, as well as against a movie based on a game. It was an incredibly fun movie, I think, and the storyline did an amazing job of reconciling the mario game with reality, not unlike the recent batman films. I get the same free spirited feeling frrom Moulin Rouge, ironically.
