Nice video. I climbed Mera back in 2003 and only have my photos, so your footage is a great reminder of how cold and exhausting it all was from High camp. Fantastic memories and the highlight of my 3 years of living in Nepal. What is the name of the song playing in the background as you summit?
Yes, we were supported by a sherpa team, I joined a "Summit Climb" expedition led by Dan Mazur, much easier in terms of logisitics and transporting gear to have a local operator, we probably had around 20kg of gear each. You'd be able to do most of the trek yourself easilly staying at tea houses, but you'd need a tent and cooking gear for 2 or 3 days on the Mera ascent. Good luck...
Thanks for the reply but roughly how fit were you - are you of average fitness or much higher than average would you say ie/ marathon / triathlon level ? I'm desperate to do a Mera Peak climb as I feel the views are just outstanding. Did you do any acclimatisation time/climbs before attempting the summit or is this not needed at that height ?
I was 34 at the time and quite fit but not super fit. I don't run marathons or triathlons, but I go bushwalking (in Oz) every fortnight, and play soccer twice a week.
Acclimatisation - yeah, slowly gain height on the approach trek and do a couple of acclimatisation walks above the villages, then have 2 nights at Mera Peak base camp before the summit attempt. I climbed Island Peak straight after Mera Peak which was easy following acclimatisation on Mera.
@richardtpattison Thanks Richard - quite inspirational. This seems to be one of the mountains that offers some of the feeling of a proper mountain expedition and fairly serious altitude whilst still being do-able for mere mortals. I've got 2 littl'uns so I'm hoping to come back from this hence no Everest and definitely no K2 !
@francisjtuk if you have a satelite phone then yes, not sure about mobile/cell phones.
Over the last 2 years cell coverage has increased across the region to Everest Base camp (north side - Tibet) and most of the Khumbu valley on the south side of Everest, I don't know the current status around Mera...

No you don't need climbing experience for Mera Peak, as long as you join a group expedition they will give you an introductory seion during the trip.
You do need to be quite fit, but that's more due to the lack of oxygen at altitude than the exersion, determination to keep going when you're not feeling great is the most important asset. Good luck...Rich.
Nepal is great, I had a little solar panel to charge the battery, but also most of the tea houses in the Khumbu valley offer the facility to charge your battery at what seems a ridiculous rate (maybe 300 rupees an hour). Good luck with your travels...
Hey Richard, amazing video mate...just a quick question, how did you charge your camera all the time for all these shots? Hope you had an awesome time mate!

were you guys supported by a sherpa team? Or were you guys self reliant. Bags are pretty big.
