Wow, so much negative content....Most people don't know but BJJ is really Judo. The Japanese national that taught the Gracies was an expert in Judo not Jujitsu. He used that name because The founder of Judo Jigaro Kano change the competitive aspect of Judo to emphasis throwing rather than ground fighting. Apparently, He did not agree with the change so he felt that using term Jujitsu better fit what he taught. I say this to say that Sambo comes from Judo also. The Russians modified somethings.

What do you call ''free grappling''? ADCC? ADCC rules are written for brazilians and by brazilians. Still just a few russian and other ex-soviet unuion grapplers took part in ADCC competitions, because ithey're still not well-known and popular in Russia. And even after that we have a champion there and some medalists. Allthough those medalists are are not well-ranked in Russia. And people in the video do not look just russian. They look european.

I'm agree that bjj is right now a little better on the ground, and their submission technique is a little better than sambo's but 1) sambo is the closest thing 2) grappling - is not just submissions. And by the way leg locks were created by sambo and only after that in 1996 were included in bjj. Soon sambo will be better on the ground too.

@ferchopo i disagree because Fedor fought against Nog and other BJJ black belts that are on the same level as Werdum and they all lost and their BJJ was meaningless against Fedor. The only way to win over Fedor is to catch him in an error just like Werdum did, that I will give him but to say BJJ is the reason he lost is bull because if you want to say it that way.. then you can say "Sambo is the reason Fedor won over all BJJ players he fought", which is also not a 100% true statement.

My comment was more in the context of stating that the Fedor - Werdum fight is evidence that when faced with a stronger opponent (which I think we can agree on when talking about Fedor) you can come out on top using jiu-jitsu which in its Helio Gracie form advocates for the use of technique over physical skills as strength and agility. I see a tougher road for someone trying to knock Fedor out.
@ferchopo yes, I see your valid point on Fedor VS Werdum but it's not "jiujitsu" that won, it's the training method of a particular move. Triangle Choke is not a jiujitsu originated move, it was created by a Judoka in early 1900s. If a Catch Wrestler submits someone with an leg lock, that doesn't make this move a Sambo move (since Sambo is considered to be king of leg locks). Helio Gracie did not invent any new techniques, he invented a teaching style to these techniques.

What is the point of entering a sambo tournament when you don't even compete like they do, all I saw in this vid is him taking down into his guard, he should have just entered into another BJJ tournament., it's like a boxer going into a TKD tournament and just punching.

A Boxer entering a TKD tournament and beating the shit out of the TKD fighters, would be very very embarassing for the TKD guys, and show people that the style the boxer has, might be way more effective than their own style.

Pankration predates jiujitsu, sambo, and anything else contemporaneous with current mixed martial arts. It was, and still is, the very first kind of mixed martial arts. It was fought as early as 640 BCE.
This form of fighting is as old Kung Fu, if not older. It's ancient.
@hyroglyphx it predates kung fu. i've read where it is believed pankration made it's way to india via Alexander's conquests. India is the birthplace of Buddhism (not china as some people think) and so it may be that techniques were passed on to buddists and developed extensivley by shaolin monks into kung fu. i love history and this was interesting to me.

@AznInvazn69Theory Judo and Sambo and even Wrestling is the best because they are proven to work against multiple attackers and one on one. For example, Judo & Sambo, the key is to remain standing while making your enemy go to the ground (via a throw) and if needed, Judo/Sambo can proceed to the ground for the pin or submission. In BJJ, the goal is to go to the ground right away via pulling guard (which 80% of BJJ guys do) and that's not helpful.

@pcjudosambo I would just like to clearly differentiate Grandmaster Helio Gracie’s jiu-jitsu system from brazilian jiu jitsu or sport jiu-jitsu as seen on tournaments and the UFC. In almost all of the first 27 fundamental lessons you spend years perfecting defense standing up against shirt grabs, standing chokes, etc. before even hitting the mat.

It is almost irrelevant what RG did or didnht do in MMA. Just read the testamonies of anyone who rolled with him in the dojo or the ring. I've never heard anyone say 'Rickson was soft as shite!'. Rickson is a winner Gracie BJJ is effective and IS the most dominant style in MMA. BJJ works and MMA fighters go NO WHERE without at least SOME skill in BJJ deal with the reality. Now if Rickson lost to tripp under odd sambo rules that's fine, Rickson is a loser in ONE sambo fight to one guy because he was thrown (gay rules) can tripp beat him in MMA or in a grappling comp where a throw does not equal a win. guys are thrown and taken down ALL the time in BJJ but the fight goes on.
Grappling is easy to train in whereas striking styles are much more dangerous to train in. Many strikers under-train because real training means real striking and not so much sparring. It's a major reason why so many strikers lose to BJJ practitioners. If you want to compare styles, which is all just physics, BJJ ain't at the top. Effectiveness derives from the individual and not the style. A person cannot represent a style in a real fight, but only his personal attempt of the style.
For example, 60% success rate with BJJ vs 60% success rate with Sansho; 90% BJJ vs 70% muay thai, etc.
This is what should be compared. These percentages represent an individual's success rate vs another individual's success rate. No one is perfect and no one can ever be at 100%. !00% = the style. Less than that is simply attempt. An attempt does not represent a while style and therefore a person cannot represent a style.
Let's stop with the bullshit excuses. Whatever the reasons grappling wins over striking more times now if you want to say it's because of undertraining fine (bullshit, but fine) but the end story is that grappling wins. And all things being equal BJJ beats striking look at Royce an inexperianced fighter fighting the likes of delucia(sp) who claimed countless victories as a striker the style accounts for a lot and te gracies have proven their style time andagain.

Furthermore he did take advantage of the lack of knowledge on ground fighting. Also UFC rules cater specifically to BJJ. I am pretty sure Fedor and Sakuraba would both be a good match for him.

Judo, BJJ and Sambo are all highly effective grappling systems. None could be said to be superior to another; they simply have different strategies and priorities in relation to submission and positional control.

There is no best MA, each one is designed to specialize in certain aspects. If you're gonna go by that, then we can say Pancrase is better than BJJ cuz Rickson backed down from Bas Rutten's challenge. Or the fact that Fedor is a huge Sambo practitioner and he's dominated just about anyone that has entered the ring with him. You being a brown belt should know better than generalizing that. Rickson himself has stated that he is bringing an addition to the table when BJJ was established in the US.
I am sure he knows jiu jitsu. I recall seeing quite a bit of armbars and ankle locks. All I know is he has the ability to slip out of jiu jitsu moves...ALA Nogeria. So in order to beat it, he has to practice it.
Judo, BJJ, Japanese Jiujustsu, and Sambo are all functionally identical. A Judo Gym that spends a lot of time on groundwork is indistinguishable from BJJ.
Yes, the rules are slightly different for each, but only in tournaments. The actual fight mechanics are all derived from the same source.

Wow, so much negative content....Most people don't know but BJJ is really Judo. The Japanese national that taught the Gracies was an expert in Judo not Jujitsu. He used that name because The founder of Judo Jigaro Kano change the competitive aspect of Judo to emphasis throwing rather than ground fighting. Apparently, He did not agree with the change so he felt that using term Jujitsu better fit what he taught. I say this to say that Sambo comes from Judo also. The Russians modified somethings.

What do you call ''free grappling''? ADCC? ADCC rules are written for brazilians and by brazilians. Still just a few russian and other ex-soviet unuion grapplers took part in ADCC competitions, because ithey're still not well-known and popular in Russia. And even after that we have a champion there and some medalists. Allthough those medalists are are not well-ranked in Russia. And people in the video do not look just russian. They look european.

Just because they could easily take down bjj fighters and hold them down. And it was difficult to submit them. I'm agree that bjj is right now a little better on the ground, and their submission technique is a little better than sambo's but 1) sambo is the closest thing 2) grappling - is not just submissions. And by the way leg locks were created by sambo and only after that in 1996 were included in bjj. Soon sambo will be better on the ground too.

@ferchopo i disagree because Fedor fought against Nog and other BJJ black belts that are on the same level as Werdum and they all lost and their BJJ was meaningless against Fedor. The only way to win over Fedor is to catch him in an error just like Werdum did, that I will give him but to say BJJ is the reason he lost is bull because if you want to say it that way.. then you can say "Sambo is the reason Fedor won over all BJJ players he fought", which is also not a 100% true statement.

My comment was more in the context of stating that the Fedor - Werdum fight is evidence that when faced with a stronger opponent (which I think we can agree on when talking about Fedor) you can come out on top using jiu-jitsu which in its Helio Gracie form advocates for the use of technique over physical skills as strength and agility. I see a tougher road for someone trying to knock Fedor out.

@ferchopo yes, I see your valid point on Fedor VS Werdum but it's not "jiujitsu" that won, it's the training method of a particular move. Triangle Choke is not a jiujitsu originated move, it was created by a Judoka in early 1900s. If a Catch Wrestler submits someone with an leg lock, that doesn't make this move a Sambo move (since Sambo is considered to be king of leg locks). Helio Gracie did not invent any new techniques, he invented a teaching style to these techniques.

Pankration predates jiujitsu, sambo, and anything else contemporaneous with current mixed martial arts. It was, and still is, the very first kind of mixed martial arts. It was fought as early as 640 BCE.
This form of fighting is as old Kung Fu, if not older. It's ancient.

India is the birthplace of Buddhism (not china as some people think) and so it may be that techniques were passed on to buddists and developed extensivley by shaolin monks into kung fu. i love history and this was interesting to me.

For example, Judo & Sambo, the key is to remain standing while making your enemy go to the ground (via a throw) and if needed, Judo/Sambo can proceed to the ground for the pin or submission. In BJJ, the goal is to go to the ground right away via pulling guard (which 80% of BJJ guys do) and that's not helpful.

@pcjudosambo I would just like to clearly differentiate Grandmaster Helio Gracie’s jiu-jitsu system from brazilian jiu jitsu or sport jiu-jitsu as seen on tournaments and the UFC. In almost all of the first 27 fundamental lessons you spend years perfecting defense standing up against shirt grabs, standing chokes, etc. before even hitting the mat.

Also, now take Rickson vs Fedor in a Sambo match or judo match, Fedor would qin him BUT Rickson vs an average sambist (as seen in the video) he owns.

Rickson is a winner Gracie BJJ is effective and IS the most dominant style in MMA. BJJ works and MMA fighters go NO WHERE without at least SOME skill in BJJ deal with the reality. Now if Rickson lost to tripp under odd sambo rules that's fine, Rickson is a loser in ONE sambo fight to one guy because he was thrown (gay rules) can tripp beat him in MMA or in a grappling comp where a throw does not equal a win. guys are thrown and taken down ALL the time in BJJ but the fight goes on.

Grappling is easy to train in whereas striking styles are much more dangerous to train in. Many strikers under-train because real training means real striking and not so much sparring. It's a major reason why so many strikers lose to BJJ practitioners. If you want to compare styles, which is all just physics, BJJ ain't at the top. Effectiveness derives from the individual and not the style. A person cannot represent a style in a real fight, but only his personal attempt of the style.

For example, 60% success rate with BJJ vs 60% success rate with Sansho; 90% BJJ vs 70% muay thai, etc.
This is what should be compared. These percentages represent an individual's success rate vs another individual's success rate. No one is perfect and no one can ever be at 100%. !00% = the style. Less than that is simply attempt. An attempt does not represent a while style and therefore a person cannot represent a style.

Let's stop with the bullshit excuses. Whatever the reasons grappling wins over striking more times now if you want to say it's because of undertraining fine (bullshit, but fine) but the end story is that grappling wins. And all things being equal BJJ beats striking look at Royce an inexperianced fighter fighting the likes of delucia(sp) who claimed countless victories as a striker the style accounts for a lot and te gracies have proven their style time andagain.

I'm not trying to protect anything. I'm just stepping in and stating facts. Many fighters who practice BJJ win fights using BJJ, but these people do not represent BJJ. Styles cannot be compared through fighters. That is the simple point that I'm making. BJJ is awesome on the ground; it's one of my primary MA practices. I don't want people's logic to mislead them from real logic.

BJJ guys don't know how to throw. It's a fact. If you throw somebody in a street fight on a asphalt or rocky surface then fight is done. Sambo is more practical then BJJ.

All of these guys are top level BJJ guys and sambo or no samboi they would throw your ass HARD! Sambo borrows all of its throws from Judo and they do them badly. I'd like to see you pull off a "wheel" in the street. Arlovsky himself says Sambo is shit. Without chokes you're dead on the street, as Helio said, a man can still fight with a broken arm.

@hazard2000 actually, your wrong. he IS the top ranked HW fighter in the world.. hes also contests the top 2 spot for best p4P fighter in the world. this is true on any educated ranking system, sherdog, mmafighting, all of them. "scared of the ufc" u obviously know nothing about mma, your just a ufc fan. the ufc doesnt have all the best fighters, especially HW. fedor tried to go to the ufc, but dana refused his contract requirements, thats simple fact. he got everything he wanted in strike.

your wrong, He turned down the first contract from the UFC and then they offered a secound one and agreed to all his terms, including that he could still compete in sambo and offered more money then strikeforce and he still said no, seems like hes scared to me

@hazard2000 actually your wrong, and the information is easy to find. Before any negotiations occured Fedor told white that his contract demanded that he could do sambo, AND that M-1 global would co-promote all of fedors fights. Dana didnt even show up to the negotiations because he refused to let M-1 co-promote. dana then tried to force the issue with money, and fedor told him his price stands.Dana then told his ppl to leave and turned around and started talking shit. thats fact get it right

@hazard2000 the whole issue came down to dana refusing to let M-1 co-promote his fights..well m-1 IS fedors company, so of course he would expect it. Strikeforce gave him everything he wanted and UFC refused, its that simple. Feodr has said many times he doesnt care about just money, he wants to see the sport grow, getting trapped in a shitty UFC contract doesnt really do that. Many fighters are or are planning on leaving UFC because of they shitty way they treat fighters. look at hendo.

It is definitely NOT a fact. Watch Demian Maia's throw on Chael Sonnen in the UFC, or Andre Galvao's throw on Gordiniho in the Worlds 08. Its at the beggining of Andres HL on youtube. That was a bone crushing throw

actually it was a judo match. and he counted his record of 400+ just cuz he "beat" people during training matches lol. I wouldn't say he's overrated because he is definitely on a superior level in his field. But i did lose a little respect when he backed down on Bas Rutten. Furthermore he did take advantage of the lack of knowledge on ground fighting. Also UFC rules cater specifically to BJJ. I am pretty sure Fedor and Sakuraba would both be a good match for him.

he has dominated the world of sambo for years but he lost this year to a bulgarian, but he was busy leading up to it doing a film, he has been placed in judo a good few times in russian nationals as well.

Judo, BJJ and Sambo are all highly effective grappling systems. None could be said to be superior to another; they simply have different strategies and priorities in relation to submission and positional control.
Having said that, this video is awesome.

There is no best MA, each one is designed to specialize in certain aspects. If you're gonna go by that, then we can say Pancrase is better than BJJ cuz Rickson backed down from Bas Rutten's challenge. Or the fact that Fedor is a huge Sambo practitioner and he's dominated just about anyone that has entered the ring with him. You being a brown belt should know better than generalizing that. Rickson himself has stated that he is bringing an addition to the table when BJJ was established in the US.

Yes, he is a Sambo and Judo Master and he is trained in boxing as well. He is phenomenal and is not affiliated with any jiu-jitsu schools.

I am sure he knows jiu jitsu. I recall seeing quite a bit of armbars and ankle locks. All I know is he has the ability to slip out of jiu jitsu moves...ALA Nogeria. So in order to beat it, he has to practice it.

Judo, BJJ, Japanese Jiujustsu, and Sambo are all functionally identical. A Judo Gym that spends a lot of time on groundwork is indistinguishable from BJJ.
Yes, the rules are slightly different for each, but only in tournaments. The actual fight mechanics are all derived from the same source.
