does the dm10 play samples??....if so I'd like buy a kit and sample my acoustic kit , then show the dudes I jam with my new drums ..then they would say "those drums sound the same as your old ones".............nice kit!
As far as I know the only Surge cymbals that would work with the DM6 is the 12" Hi-hat cymbal and the 13" Crash (without choke). You may want to connect Alesis to be sure. I hope that helps.
Hello. I can hear that the bass drum's acoustic noise level is a little high. I live in an apartment, so I am concerned that I might make my neighbours angry. Is it that loud that you will annoy your neighbours below?? (i want to buy the studio version with the low-noise cymbals, so I only ask about the bass drum). Also, can I change the head on the bass drum (or any other one) with a mesh head in order for it to be quieter? Thanks in advance.
The stock bass drum pad is a little loud. You can use a mesh head but, it isn't as easy as just replacing the head. There are a few more steps in order for it to work. The good news is, it isn't very hard at all to do. I have a video here on youtube show how to do this. Also, be sure to check out DMdrummer(dot)com under the DIY section. Many have do the conversion to mesh. I hope that helps.
@HellfireDrums@RamboRabbit1345 Thank you. You are a good person just for answering questions and providing help to people for nothing in exchange. I am sure that deep inside you you are happy for helping people like this. I respect you for all these. Thanks again, and you, sir, have a wonderful day!
You need to adjust the cross talk (Xtalk) settings in the module. You really need to check out DMdrummer(dot)com. Do a search on that site for "Setting Xtalk on the DM10". Be sure to replace the (dot) with a period. I hope that helps.
This is a come problem for users that don't have their cross talk set up correctly. The first thing I would do is make sure you have the latest firmware in your DM10. Go to the Alesis website click on the DM10 Studio product and click on the docs and downloads tab. If you have the latest firmware I would suggest you visit DMdrummer(dot)com and search for "Setting Xtalk on the DM10". I hope that helps.
The best advice I can give you is, go to a music store and try some of the edrum kits. I really don't like telling people what to buy. I can tell you the after doing the mesh head conversion that it feels just as good as any Roland kit I've played. I hope that helps.
@organizedplanet2 its a good kit alot of tweekable setting if you from uk take a look on anditons music they have loads of kits at good prices thats where i got mine. after playing this and the higher end Roland kits the money difference is not worth it ( but thats just me) and this kit is so sweet with toontrack SD v2
i know its possible to record yourself while playing, but is it also possible to connect an ipod to the module and then play along with a song AND having the module recording your own playing and the song? that would be ideal for covering...
The DM10 can not record real audio (I don't know of any drum module that can). It can record your drum track but, it is via midi. If you are wanting to play with mp3's and record it all together, you could just use your computer. That really would be the easiest way to do that. I hope that helps.
1) yes, it has midi out and USB midi. For more tech info you might want to download the DM10 manual at the Alesis website.
2) I don't think the stock heads feel as good as mesh but it is easily changed to mesh and I have a video that show you how called "Alesis DM10 Pro Kit Mesh Head Upgrade"
Not 100% but, no electronic drum trigger feels 100% exactly like an acoustic drum. I would say they are about 85-90% in the feel of the trigger. I hope that helps.
This is SOOO far away from the best e-drum kit around.

It´s a new kit, 2BOX DRUMIT 5, with totally new sound architecture (alternating samples) that previously only could be found on drum plugins such as Superior Drummer 2.0 and BFD. It´s created by the guy behind Ddrum that pioneered e-drumming years ago...
hey man, I was just wondering how many EXTRA outputs you have to add more pieces to this kit? also, is it compatible with other companies parts? like Roland's vh11 hi hat? or Yamaha's hi hats/cymbals?
I was checking the DM10 studio realhead pads, are they gonna last more than 1 year if I keep it all original?
I'm worried bout the rim, is there any replacement for the soft rubber on them? Do they still work just as fine when the rubber is gone, probably louder though?
I don't get all the crosstalk stuff, but tell me: is it module related or midi related? Because I was thinking on using it with BFD. Will I still have to worry about crosstalk when using VSTs?
call me crazy but i would love to hook up a china and a splash along with the regular cymbols but im thinking bout saving up for a decent roland or this n a car hmmm????????
@HellfireDrums Yeah that answers my question, thanks! Part of me was hoping I could load in my own samples but part of me knew that would be too good to be true :p Still seems like a solid kit though.
I have this kit as well but my ride isn't tripple zone and the sensitivity in some kits is very strange. it's just out of the box so I don't know if I have to make changes at the modul.
Hey, is the Alesis DM10 Surge cymbals compatible with other DM modules such as the DM 5,6 and 7 because i love the look and the sound of them but the price for the whole set is a lil too much for my christmas budget
Fantastic review. I loved that you added the acoustic sound from hitting the actual pads. I was afraid the Surge cymbals would be too loud. But had a question, on the site it says you can get any head and replace the Alesis ones. So I could get some Remo heads and put them on the triggers and it would feel like an acoustic set? Would you know if that would affect the sensitivity?
The kit comes with real drum heads already, but once they wear out you can replace them with Remo or other brand drum heads. Keep in mind that no electronic drum kit feels 100% the same as acoustic. The DM10 feels about 3/4 of the way there. I hope that helps.
Neither one feel 100% like an acoustic drum. The Roland has a lot more bounce to them and the Alesis feels a little harder than the acoustic drum. I can telll you that more people tend to prefer the mesh feel over the Alesis RealHead feel, but that is not a problem if you convert the Alesis triggers to mesh. ;)
To see the difference between the pro and the studio, you are best off going to the Alesis home page at alesis(dot)com. That would be easier than me explaining it. I hope that helps.
I would only recommend the Roland HD1 or Alesis DM6 to someone new to drumming. If they are not new to drumming you will want to look at the Alesis DM10 or the Roland TD-4 and up. Keep in mind the Alesis DM10 Pro is more gig worthy than the DM10 studio. If you go for the Roland kit try to get the mesh pads. Above all, your drummer should try them out at the store (if he can) before you buy or buy from a place with a good return policy. Hope that helps.
Like regular drums the drum head will need to be changed once in a while. How hard you play and how tight the heads are will determine that. Any standard drums will work so yes parts are easily available. Alesis also has replacement parts if need be. I have never had a problem yet and I've had my kit for a little over a year now. I hope that helps.
@beatpaz The cymbal triggers are made with a real cymbal to give it a better feel. If you get a chance you might want to check out alesis(dot)com for more information about the Surge cymbals. I hope that helps.
I started playing back in 1988, but it has been an on again off again thing. I had a chance to see some of your videos. You are a very good drummer. I look forward to seeing more videos from you.
i might buy this kit, but one hesitation: are the toms and snare too loud (acoustic volume wise) ? would it be quiet enough to play at nighttime?(i wouldn't buy it with the surge cymbals).
That depends on where you live. They are not as quiet as mesh based pads, but it is easy to upgrade this kit to be just like those mesh pad kits. I did a video on this called: Alesis DM10 Pro Kit Mesh Head Upgrade. Look it up here on YouTube. I hope that helps.
No, as a matter of fact the Alesis DM10 comes with over 1000 built in sounds. The kit you hear in the video is directly for the DM10 itself and it is not hooked up to a computer. I hope that helps.
Dude you talk too much and your skills are not what they should be to be doing this video. Get a player, drop the text to 1 or 2 lines.... probably might work then...
The rolands kits equipped with the rubber kick pad are terrible. The rubber pad response is nil, like it absorbs input and returns little energy. I hope the dm10 kick pad is better.
is this kit on par with the roland td-9sx? i want to buy a new edrum set but im not so sure if i want to spend 1000 dollars more for the td-9 are the sounds on the module and their editing level about the same? i dont mind mesh or mylar heads i dont care about that stuff im worried about the sound of the thing
Yes. The sounds (in my opinion) are better than the Roland TD-9. The Alesis DM10 has a much deeper editing system. On the DM10 you can assign two sounds to the same trigger and mix them. You're not going to do that with TD-9. The DM10 also has velocity filters. Basically, you can have the pitch and/or decay of the trigger change the harder or softer you hit it. You can't tweak that on a TD-9. And when you go to expand the DM10 can access 30+ more triggers via Midi that you can edit.
I've heard that the kick pad is a bit top heavy on the Pro and the Studio Kit's and some people have problems with it tipping over- have you had any problems with it?
I will work but you will have issues getting your cymbals to work with the DM10. That is because of Roland's use of aftertouch on the cymbal switches. The DM10 doesn't use aftertouch.
I like the Surge cymbals because they feel just like real cymbals. With that said, I don't have any problems with the Surge or the Roland cymbals. I don't believe one is better then the other. It would depend on what you want out of your cymbal triggers. You want the quietest cymbals? Then the rubber Roland one or the way to go. If you want the feel of real cymbals, then the Surge are the way to go.
That is a little hard to answer because it all depends on how isolated your apartment is from the next, what type of neighbors do you have, how hard do you hit. The best advice I can give you is to find a music store with some edrum kits and try them out for yourself. That way you will know how loud they are. I hope that helps.
Yes, The racks are different, and the Studio comes with one 10" inch drum trigger and four 8" inch drum triggers. The Pro comes with a chrome ego rack (better for gigging with), two 10" inch drum triggers and two 8" inch drum triggers (and of course the Surge cymbals). You can get more info over at DMdrummer(dot)com. and at Alesis(dot)com. I hope that helps.
i was looking at the studio version of the DM10 kit. I'm not sure what the difference is. can you explain? and is there a way to have more cymbal pads on this kit? because i use a four piece with two chinas, a crash, and a crash/ride
No special software needed. The easiest way to record yourself is connecting the headphone out of the DM10 to your stereo line in on your computer. If you are using a Mac just use GarageBand. If you are on a PC you can use a free program called Audacity. Just Google it and you will find it. I hope that helps.
You can get two sounds per trigger and you can program the two sounds to be what ever you want them to be (using the internal sounds). So yes you can have a rim click. I hope that helps.
I never liked yamaha's rubber pads...or any rubber pads. That leaves Roland vs Alesis. This kit ($1,299 via J&R) EASILY compares to the $3,500 Roland td-9K. It's better in some ways. More inputs, real drumheads...etc. It's about time someone knocked the extremely overpriced roland off thier pearch.
hey, using ezdrummer how can i set up my alesis dm 10 pro HI HAT CONTROL. All the other pads seem to work fine. I've tried changing midi notes, but there isnt a seperate function for the hi hat pad and the pedal. Advice? haha thanks a lot!
Electronic drums need to be set-up for live performance. It is one thing to play in a room by yourself with headphones, its another animal to be playing in a live band. He needs to adjust his "Threshold" for the triggers in question. The higher the "Threshold" the more of a vibration it takes to trigger that drum. He may want to also check out DMdrummer(dot)com. BTW, don't spell out "dot" in that address. Youtube doesn't allow URLs in comments. Good info over there about the DM10.
how does these sound compare to the ones in softwares, like addictive drums or superior drums? I am trying to decide between this and the alesis usb pro, running addictive drums.
No drum module sounds as good as the computer VST's. That goes for Roland and Yamaha as well. There are some advantages using the DM10 over the usb pro however. For one you have more inputs with the DM10. You will be able to load different sound sets into the DM10 that sound as good as a computer VST and you can still plug the DM10 into the computer like the usb pro if you like. It is also nice to be able to practice without having to turn on your computer. I hope that helps.
Great review. Thanks for providing unbiased feedback. I'm about to make my first foray into electronic drums and videos like this are most helpful. IMO, electronic drums have a real place in the music world just like electronic pianos vs. acoustic pianos. The biggest challenge will be adapting my methods to the kit. I'd like a little more advice on amplification. Will a kit like this need its own independent amp when playing out or can I get a small 50w monitor and run the rest through the PA?
Yes, you can run a small monitor and run the rest through the PA. I would suggest at least a 100 watt monitor. A keyboard amp should work fine. I know a lot of people like using the Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor - about $300.00. I hope that helps.
well, the alesis dm10 price is cheaper, but the main difference is the rack, the cymbals, and the number of pads, i would get the pro kit, but i don't hav extra money 2 get it, and plus if ur looking to expanding ur kit, like i am, then u have to buy the expensive surge cymbals, i would get the alesis dm10 studio, and add a cy-8 cymbal, and a nice snare mesh pad, but im just waiting for the studio to come out, by sometime next month, if u want more info on it, mssg me back, there's more 2 it
i have another question, is there any kit, on the sound module, that makes it sound like mike johnston's kit(u can search him on youtube, and his account name is "drumteacher76") is there a kit that can sound like his kit(his dw drum set), thanks, sorry, just wondering, cause that's probably the best sounding drumset i've ever heard, pleas reply
The basic kits set up it the DM10 don't sound like that. You may be able to make a kit sound similar but it would take some doing and it still would not be perfect. Maybe in the future Alesis will have a download sound set that will but for now, nothing standard like that.
You can re-assign the hi-hat (mean both cymbal and pedal) to a bass drum. Of course you would need to re-assign one of your other triggers as a hi-hat, but yes it can be done.
The DM10 should work with all VST drum software. It is just a matter of making sure the midi notes from the module match what the software is looking for.
Sorry I misunderstood your question. You can not upload any old sounds into the DM10. To learn why, you will need to listen to my interview with the product manager of Alesis Jim Norman from my web site. Once there, search for "Podcast 8/20/2009 Episode!" and you will find your answer.
Ok i will but that's what their rep said it will do. They stressed it was unique and that they were going to work with these VST companies to offer this. Perhaps they are not there yet with it?
That's terrible. i was so excited to hear the DM10 brain would take sounds from VST programs like Superior Drummer, etc. That was the only reason i would but one. Now I'm off to go cry! :( now i have a reason to drink! lol
With a 128mb you'll be lucky to get snare and kick from a 3rd party VSTi drum plug in.
Heck I think my basic easy drummmer kits is like 400-500mb. These e-drum companies need to get with the program and bump up the memory drives, it ain't like that flash memory cost 1K per gig.
Oh, sorry, I wrote in german. So I try wants more in english. Is the triggering as bad as the DM5? I was dissapoited about it, because you have to give to much pressure to get a sound out of it. Is it similar to the DM10? Is there a positional sensing? Thank You for Your Video and answer. Greetings,
No, there is no positional sensing in the DM10. As far as the triggering, I pretty much covered that in the video. Out of the box I had to hit it rather hard but, after some tweaking it works great.
Gruss,
I don't believe the DM10 module itself is a medeli product. I don't see why the surge pack wouldn't work with your dd508. Keep in mind, the choke function of a cymbal is dependent on the module you are using. Double check with your manual to see if the dd508 module can handle this function.
hay man im looking to buy this kit, so thats roughly my price range would you reccomend i get this or do you have a better option?

I am guitar player...so i really have no idea about e.drum sets.
All i thought was....it MUST be a "Roland" !!
What would you say would be the best to buy??
A Roland HD1? A ROland TD 4 ? Or this Alesis Dm10 ( or maybe the DM6??)
Greetings and thanks alot !
ARNE
oARNEo 1 year ago
@oARNEo
HellfireDrums 1 year ago
hello;can you tell how long is the life of every pads because some players hit hard or is there parts avealable if need to replace thank you;;
jesneca 1 year ago
@jesneca
Like regular drums the drum head will need to be changed once in a while. How hard you play and how tight the heads are will determine that. Any standard drums will work so yes parts are easily available. Alesis also has replacement parts if need be. I have never had a problem yet and I've had my kit for a little over a year now. I hope that helps.

are the cymbals real?
beatpaz 1 year ago
@beatpaz The cymbal triggers are made with a real cymbal to give it a better feel. If you get a chance you might want to check out alesis(dot)com for more information about the Surge cymbals. I hope that helps.

I started playing back in 1988, but it has been an on again off again thing. I had a chance to see some of your videos. You are a very good drummer. I look forward to seeing more videos from you.

What kind of genres can you play on this kit, like heavy metal RnB Rock Pop ... ?

@WannabeMusicMaking
All genres. The whole kit is programmable, so you can program a kit for any genre.

what sensibility u used for the snare, toms and cymbals?
gondoric 1 year ago
@gondoric
I don't remember off the top of my head. I have since updated the trigger to mesh heads. By doing that the settings need to be changed.
HellfireDrums 1 year ago
i might buy this kit, but one hesitation: are the toms and snare too loud (acoustic volume wise) ? would it be quiet enough to play at nighttime?(i wouldn't buy it with the surge cymbals).
MasiukA 1 year ago
@MasiukA
That depends on where you live. They are not as quiet as mesh based pads, but it is easy to upgrade this kit to be just like those mesh pad kits. I did a video on this called: Alesis DM10 Pro Kit Mesh Head Upgrade. Look it up here on YouTube. I hope that helps.

does this kit have to be hooked up to a computer to work and have the sounds
drummerjosh100 1 year ago
@drummerjosh100

MrPowerring 1 year ago
is this kit on par with the roland td-9sx? i want to buy a new edrum set but im not so sure if i want to spend 1000 dollars more for the td-9 are the sounds on the module and their editing level about the same? i dont mind mesh or mylar heads i dont care about that stuff im worried about the sound of the thing
synlynzero 1 year ago
@synlynzero

We don't care about your passion for your own voice; just play the drums and we will figure it out by the SOUND OF THE DAMN THINGS. Thanks Mr. MC.

I've heard that the kick pad is a bit top heavy on the Pro and the Studio Kit's and some people have problems with it tipping over- have you had any problems with it?

Hi will this DM10 module work on the DM5 drum pads ? Can one buy just the module ?
Jakes1233 1 year ago
How do you think the module would work with a Roland TD 12 pad kit?
drumkrup 1 year ago
@drumkrup
I will work but you will have issues getting your cymbals to work with the DM10. That is because of Roland's use of aftertouch on the cymbal switches. The DM10 doesn't use aftertouch.
HellfireDrums 1 year ago
@HellfireDrums
So would you say for cymbals, the Roland TD-9 kit is better?
Solely speaking cymbals, would Roland have the upper hand here?
I noticed that Roland uses the same cymbals for all their kits up to the highest TD-9 kit, but are they still better than the DM10 Surge cymbals?
ChaoYRick 1 year ago
@ChaoYRick
If you want the feel of real cymbals, then the Surge are the way to go.

would you recommend this type of kit for an apartment because ive heard its a lot louder than expected
drumstick1dylan 1 year ago
@drumstick1dylan
That is a little hard to answer because it all depends on how isolated your apartment is from the next, what type of neighbors do you have, how hard do you hit. The best advice I can give you is to find a music store with some edrum kits and try them out for yourself. That way you will know how loud they are. I hope that helps.

Is there a different between the DM10 Pro and the DM10 Studio, beside the Cymbals?? Pls answer
CxRxGx 1 year ago
@CxRxGx
I hope that helps.

hoy man how do you record yourself to the computer , is there like a special software
turruben 1 year ago
@turruben
No special software needed. The easiest way to record yourself is connecting the headphone out of the DM10 to your stereo line in on your computer. If you are using a Mac just use GarageBand. If you are on a PC you can use a free program called Audacity. Just Google it and you will find it. I hope that helps.

Can you get a rim click on the snare on this kit?
disturbedrocks992 1 year ago
@disturbedrocks992

It's about time someone knocked the extremely overpriced roland off thier pearch.

my drummer bought this its great when its working right,what would cause a loud bass or guitar to set off his triggers,its quite annoying,any idea,
evelskunny 1 year ago
@evelskunny
HellfireDrums 1 year ago
how does these sound compare to the ones in softwares, like addictive drums or superior drums? I am trying to decide between this and the alesis usb pro, running addictive drums.
novanine9 1 year ago
@novanine9

Will a kit like this need its own independent amp when playing out or can I get a small 50w monitor and run the rest through the PA?
leavnsmallville78 1 year ago
@leavnsmallville78
Yes, you can run a small monitor and run the rest through the PA. I would suggest at least a 100 watt monitor. A keyboard amp should work fine. I know a lot of people like using the Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor - about $300.00. I hope that helps.

what better to buy the Alesis DM10 pro kit or the Alesis DM10 studio??
PaulRonald 1 year ago
well, the alesis dm10 price is cheaper, but the main difference is the rack, the cymbals, and the number of pads, i would get the pro kit, but i don't hav extra money 2 get it, and plus if ur looking to expanding ur kit, like i am, then u have to buy the expensive surge cymbals, i would get the alesis dm10 studio, and add a cy-8 cymbal, and a nice snare mesh pad, but im just waiting for the studio to come out, by sometime next month, if u want more info on it, mssg me back, there's more 2 it

i have another question, is there any kit, on the sound module, that makes it sound like mike johnston's kit(u can search him on youtube, and his account name is "drumteacher76") is there a kit that can sound like his kit(his dw drum set), thanks, sorry, just wondering, cause that's probably the best sounding drumset i've ever heard, pleas reply
gibson00000000000000 1 year ago
@gibson00000000000000

Would you happen to know the list of drum sound companies this brain works with? Like BFD, Superior drummer, additive drums, etc?
johnbambammorgan 2 years ago
The DM10 should work with all VST drum software. It is just a matter of making sure the midi notes from the module match what the software is looking for.
HellfireDrums 2 years ago
Then were you able to actually import any drum sounds into the DM10 Brain from any of the drum VST programs?
johnbambammorgan 2 years ago
Sorry I misunderstood your question. You can not upload any old sounds into the DM10. To learn why, you will need to listen to my interview with the product manager of Alesis Jim Norman from my web site. Once there, search for "Podcast 8/20/2009 Episode!" and you will find your answer.
HellfireDrums 2 years ago
Ok i will but that's what their rep said it will do. They stressed it was unique and that they were going to work with these VST companies to offer this. Perhaps they are not there yet with it?
johnbambammorgan 2 years ago
That's terrible. i was so excited to hear the DM10 brain would take sounds from VST programs like Superior Drummer, etc. That was the only reason i would but one. Now I'm off to go cry! :( now i have a reason to drink! lol
johnbambammorgan 2 years ago

Greetings,
Jörg
tonart4U 2 years ago 2
No, there is no positional sensing in the DM10. As far as the triggering, I pretty much covered that in the video. Out of the box I had to hit it rather hard but, after some tweaking it works great.

Gruss,

is the DM10 also by medeli? And will the surge pack work with a dd508?
CnongTatayMo 2 years ago
I don't believe the DM10 module itself is a medeli product. I don't see why the surge pack wouldn't work with your dd508. Keep in mind, the choke function of a cymbal is dependent on the module you are using. Double check with your manual to see if the dd508 module can handle this function.
