@bluesdoctor11 Mainstream musicians today are like that. There are plenty of talented musicians that aren't as well known; you just have to look for them.
I remember when I bought the album 'Allman Brothers Band' in 1971 and put this on for the first time. As no doubt you all know it was the opening track. It blew me away then and it has every time since. This version has that raw rock-sound that a studio album can't capture!

@1moment2choose pink floyd was touring in europe at the time. on 3-20-70 they were playing in lund sweden. and in march 1971 they were still touring in europe. u have no idea what ur talking about. they were probably jamming with the grateful dead.
@MrPinkfloydfan420 The Grateful Dead were at the University of Iowa that night..They were at the Capitol Theater in New York in 1970, which is a long way from New Orleans. Maybe someone(I don't mean you) needs to stay away from the brown acid.
while y'all talk, I will add my greatful thanks. I am too swamped carin for mom to trade or stay on top of great great stuff.. like this. Wow I do appreciate hearing this. Thanks so much!
I think it's in the Filmore Tapes CD. The photographer was trying hard to get the boys to take a decent photo for the album cover, but they were in a surly mood. Then, so the story goes, Duane saw a guy he knew with some coke. So he goes over, gets some and hides it in his hands. He's smiling like a Cheshire cat and the others are cracking up. The photographer snapped the picture and the cover for Filmore East was made. Look at the Filmore photo and check out Duane's hands.
Thanks as well to bthoma 1 for posting this! Do you have more?! Wonder if they did this song the week before at the Fillmore? Sorry to see that not many people have commented on this song as I haven't heard any other live version of this with Duane. I'm a "retired" bass player(hope to make a comeback some day!) and Duane/ABB were the reason I started playing in '74. You can feel the same intensity in his scream at the end of his intro count off as you do in his playing. He was THE GREATEST!!!!!!
Check out 5/23/70 for another fantastic version of this awesome song. I have another someplace on a bootleg. Did you know the Hour Glass did It's Not My Cross to Bear? It's on the Southbound CD.
M, Thanks for the tip buddy. Had no idea that the Hourglass did Cross. Is there a way to hear it and did they do any other ABB songs? My wife and I are going on vacation to Croatia in July. Who knows, maybe that will end up being the location for Blues, Booze, Cigars & Tattoos!:0) Best, H
I think you can still get the Hour Glass CD Southbound from the Hiitin the Note website. By the way, the song Southbound on the CD is NOT the same one from the Brothers and Sisters album. It is totally different song, sort of sounds like Midnight Rider. It was here on Youtube a while ago, but got taken off. Cool song. Hope you find lots of B,B,C and T's on your trip!
It is different. These are songs that Liberty records held back or released as singles featuring Gregg as a frontman. There is a version of God Rest His Soul which Duane and Gregg did later with the 31st of February, Butch Trucks old band and a better version of Down in Texas. Other than these, Southbound, Cross and a few others, they are not very good. It is an interesting curio, or artifact, something to add to the collection Allman.
when the original line up was cooking...man, just nothing else like it

on the road -- one nighters, little to no money, cokes and hot dogs -- made this band what it was, in other words, arguably the best rock band ever.
musicians today are spoiled and not even one tenth as good (e.g., kings of leon).

The hammond in It's not my cross to bear must be one of the best sounds ever. The song digs deep.
