  • Good day...what type of scanners are those? Thank you!

  • POSH MUCH!

  • How do you plug devices into it?

  • now just use champsis its only 10 pound hahaha

  • Considered buying a Hog? It would be a degustation menu.

  • Considered buying a Hog?

  • Hi does this work with other dmx DMX software?

  • @mattgate - Yes - it'll work with any software that accepts it, if you see what I mean. (Lots of different lighting softtware can work with this particular box).

    James

  • @jamesb1919 hi is there a website that tell me what software work with this?

  • @mattgate - I'm not aware of one. It's more a question of finding some software that runs with 'different types' of interfaces and not just the one the manufacturer makes and often bundles in with the software. This velleman one is just a generic USB to DMX interface. Popular ones that I know work with it are Chamsys MagicQ PC (i've done a fair bit of programming with that one) and also Freestyler - another very popular one. Let me know if you find software and want me to have a look. James.

  • @jamesb1919 Will it work with the Sweetlight software

  • @mattgate - No that software (going on what they say on their website) requires you to buy one of their specifically designed interfaces. It will say on the manufacturer's site of whatever software you find whether it works with different interfaces or if it needs you to get their own particulary box that the software detects when it loads up.

    James

  • @jamesb1919 is there any software like Sweetlight that will work?

  • @mattgate I haven't really played with it so I wouldn't know. Freestyler is probably the best one to start with. Free and you just need this USB box. That and Chamsys MagicQ PC are the ones I've used so I don't know about many others - search online for DMX software, you'll find others and you can view screenshots of what the software looks like. James.

  • @jamesb1919 ok thx for the help

  • I want to use this with freestyler with that let me controll the lights live using this bit of kit and software?

Sorry im new to this thing so trying to work it out :)

  • @minisweed - Hi - yes the box will let you run it with Freestyler. - When you open the Freestyler software you just choose which interface you're using with it (in this case, the velleman one) as the software works with various different makes of DMX interface. Then you can program your lights.

    Hope this helps

    James

  • the lights are moving on my metallica song im playing so thumps up for u ^.^

  • Hi like the video, so its possible to set up your lights and create whatever scenes you want then trigger them with a midi controller?

  • @TheJubjub17 Hi - you can certainly create all the scenes you like using the software that comes with it - as for triggering it with a midi controller, it won't let you do that - but there are several other bits of free DMX software (eg. Freestyler, MagicQ PC) that should let you do external MIDI control.

    Cheers

    James

  • Hi like the video, so its possible to set up your lights and create whatever scenes you want then trigger them with a midi controller?

  • HI DO YOU CAN SEND ME THE CODE PROGRAM ? ON CHIP

  • can you use it with my dmx or showxpress?

  • use freestyler software with this interface, you can do alot more stuff and have even more control over the lights :)

  • I have 2 colorscans with a unbranded usb dmx cable but my one problem with the lights

is that the mirrors move a bit slowly

  • why no martin light jockey for you?

  • becouse you can use freestyler with this thing and its just as good ( if not better ) than lightjockey

  • @dorplein62 Freestyler and the Velleman usb dmx interface is nowere near as good as Lightjockey but the Enttec Pro and Freestyler is the go velleman lags to mutch

  • @ipex80 could be , but the enttec is also way more expensive than the velleman ... and the velleman performs well for the money.

  • and its cheaper

  • Cheers for the quick reply :) and yeah thinking about it now, was abit of a stupid question given that they are seperate software lol. So what you are saying is that i could create pre-sets on the interface and then trigger them quite easily when i want, to co-ordinate with a track thats playing?

  • Hi dude, gotta say, finding your vids very helpful at the mo thanks for uploading them. I have one question, is it possible to program a few pre-sets on the vellemen and then trigger them when you want using the Geni DM4?

  • Hi - glad you like the videos. Currently I know of no way to activate the different chases on the interface using the DM4 - sorry. Normally - you'd just hit the buttons onscreen to start each sequence - very dull and basic, but as they're completely separate devices, and the software won't allow you to connect them together, I don't think it can be done.

    Sorry

    James

  • @groovebarns I don't think it can be done since DMX is a master-slave system. There is only 1 master, which is the Velleman.

  • I highly recommend you dont buy this instead get Daslight DVC2 Gold

  • Well the Daslight DVC2 Gold is extremely expensive (500-600€ vs 80-100€), sure the software is great and all but for a normal consumer or for non professional circumstances the velleman controller is the way to go in my opinion

  • But its absolute sh*t man. you cant create pallets properly for a start and creating a pro look is impossible

  • why are you doing this authist?

  • dam they've put it up to £79.95! the swines!

  • WHAT! - that IS daylight robbery.

  • love your comments about vista!

  • I love that song too. Great video. Thanks for the review. I'm getting one of these to use with my automated Karaoke setup. Lights will be controlled via Visual Basic code and a velleman interface. I'll be using the Chauvet colorpalette as it allows changing from sound activation mode in to manual dmx control all via DMX. The Velleman is perfect for this type of automated lighting. Thanks again for posting this.

  • Hi probably such a stupid question but does this have to be plugged in to the puter during the light show??

    cheers

  • Its DAY LIGHT robbery.. lmao! XD

  • how many units can it handle at the same time? scanners, flower, laser etc ? im new at dmx =) thanks

  • well it depends how many channels each of your lights has. I would say (with some software other than the rubbish that comes with it) that it could comfortably handle 50 or 60 lights before it starts to slow down a bit (even so, that would be more to do with the processing power of the computer, rather than the box itself).

So the answer, in simple terms is - enough if you're not running a pink floyd concert!

  • haha ok ok =) your a funny guy mate =)

  • awesome videos!

when you create a show, do you create it with the track loaded up in the software too? cos presumably each show is specific to only one song?

  • er no - its far less glamorous than that unfortunately! - i just worked out the timings in the song that I wanted everything to change to, and then set it up that way. The software that comes with has been written by a two-year old and is absolutely rubbish - best buying the interface and then instantly downloading something like Freestyler or similar free light control software to work with it.

    James

  • james i got one of these usb dmx controlers now how do you get the fixtures added into the software cuz i was hoping dashlight dosont work with it :(

  • you have to click on 'dmx library' and then manually type in the details for each channel, as well as choose what type of fixture it is, and beam angles etc if you want to. Then click save to store it in the library folder. After that, you can then click Insert at the top and bring in the fixture to use.

  • Love that song! :-)

  • Haha so British, Brilliant.

  • what the progam that u use

  • Great presenting style! It's a wonder you haven't been snapped up for professional work.

And remember - sheveral shenes make a show!

  • haha - thanks and well spotted!

yes indeed, - "sheveral shenes make a sc..show"!

  • Thats Amazing! How Much Would It Cost For Me To Buy Everything You Needed To Do That Show And Where Can I Get These Things In America?

  • you need some wash lights for a backround effect... you cant just have scanners

  • well yes I know you wouldn't just use two lights!! this was just to show what you could do with the interface in isolation.

  • Lol... Blue And yellow.....couldn't you find any worse combination ? Pink and green FTW.. XD

  • i know its shocking isn't it! - To anyone who is adversely affected by the appalling colour clashess in this video, please write to Geni Lighting, Taiwan, PO Box WAAAAH MY EYES and tell them to design their colour wheels properly.

  • hey i have a question!!!!!!!

how do you get fixtures to slightly follow another one... like in 3:58

i have been woundering this for a long time now!!!!

    thanks for the help

    -brandon

  • Hi - well it's not actually a 'button' you have to press or something - imagine a pattern with four steps in - like the four corners of a square, 1,2,3 and 4. When you program a static scene in, fixture 1 is set to point 1, and fixture 2 to point 2. Then the next is fix.1 to point 2, and fix.2 to point 3 etc. So they are always saved one step ahead of the another. The result is that they appear to follow each other, when in fact you've just programmed them that way.

    Hope this helps - james.

  • wow thanks for the fast and friendly reply :)

  • Its a good video

  • can i ask one thing well i have a ( PRO Sound Smart Scan from maplins and i cant get it to do what i want it to do :( can you help me

  • yes I can - but that's a very vague question! Can you write down everything you're trying to do in an email to me - then I can see if I can help you - for instance are you trying to use it with DMX, if yes, are you trying to use it with this interface or whatever... please send me an email.

  • Where did u got the lights? Where did u bought them? (if u could tell us the price too, it would be great). Nice video!!!

  • how many usb ports are there on it like how many lights can i plug into it and does it use a usb to plug into the computer?

  • ah yes - sorry for the late reply - there is only one usb port on it - ie. USB in from the computer, and then you link your lights together in a chain (adding as many as you like to a certain degree) using the DMX out XLR connector also on the box.

  • great video

    your well funny

    I'm of to get one now ! = D

  • do u have to make it becouse i have to make it

  • yes - the parts come in the box - (well a resistor was missing from mine) - and you put it together - you'll need a soldering iron, and just make sure you don't break a pin off the chips, and you'll be fine.

  • prety nice setting !!

  • how old are you ?

  • What r u using to hold the scanners to the wall and were did u get them?

I can only find lighting stands and trusses. :(

    Thanx

  • The wall they are fixed onto is a brick wall (an outside wall of my house) and so the lights are simply bolted onto the wall through their hanging brackets. Probably not the best idea as I imagine that the brackets aren't designed to support the light's weight constantly, but there we are. They haven't fallen out of the wall. Yet. Just make sure you use some strong raw plugs and bolts!

  • Would it be posible to take a picture of the way your hanging one?

    Thanx

    P.s. Great vids btw :D

  • Very good mate, im off to buy one now! Like the funny antics :-)

  • what is the name of the song in your video XOXOXO

  • It's Booty Luv - Some Kinda Rush

  • Hi James. I know you have music playing while the lights are running, but are they running "synched" with the music, a-la Showmagic or ShowController?

    Thanks

  • Well - the device isn't switching the patterns TO the music; it was done by me working out timings so that it would change at specific points in the music.

  • Thanks. Do you know of any software based DMX controllers which support sound to light via the line-in from a mixer?

  • Will this work for lasers and does it support sount to light?

  • providing your lasers are DMX compatible they can be run using the device. It doesn't support sound to light.

  • Sound to light depends on the software. Freestyler supports sound to light and works with this controler. You just need to hook up an audio line in from the mixer and set it to sync from that.

  • HAHA i had the SC1 controller and couldnt get it to work either! USELESS thing!

  • you want to get hold of a pair of acrobats mate u will love them!!

  • haha your a legend!

  • What make is the lighting being used with this system??

  • Geni - 2x Geni Mojo Scan 1 (MJC-1X)

  • Fair play, that was good. I also have the K8062/VM116 and a Mojo Scan I. (only one tho :( ). I gave up trying to use the software that came with it and used FreeStyler instead, but never really got it going that well. Now I've seen its possible with the original stuff, I might go back to it.

Also, I've tried running it on a W98SE computer, but I've lost the disc, so i havnt got the right drivers, that and I'm not sure if it runs with USB1.0 speed. Any help?

Anyway, as I said, nicely done.

  • can u use a par led can with it

  • providing it is dmx controllable, then yes.

  • can i use it with a hp laptop

  • yes - any windows machine - vista isn' the best to use it with (a couple of compatability issues), but xp or 2000 works well.

  • wats the song name???

  • Sorry but don't understand why you didn't DMX up the spin master in the middle as that is DMX controlled. Also the price from the online company you quote is now £59.95 and Maplin is still £60 for 5p difference I know which type of help and support aftersales I would prefer. Give me a physical shop anytime unless the saving is over 25%

  • well yes i could have done - this was a quick demo one evening - and also the interface WAS really £49 at the time - i can't control how much prices go up at their store! So now I'd recommend going to Maplins or elsewhere - there's other places online that do it for less money.

  • this is true, prices are going up really quick on low-cost DJ equippment.

  • haha funny and imformative

  • im thinking of buying a velleman usb dmx interface, but i was trying to decide between this and a stairville dmx master 1, is their anything bad with the usb dmx controller?

    nice program btw

  • Thanks for your comments, firstly, and I have to say that the interface is a brilliant little device; if you're not too expert on DMX programming then this makes it a lot easier and straightforward. Obviously the only main difference is that you need a laptop or similar to run the program. I'm running it on Vista, with the odd fault here and there sometimes, such as specifying timings for mirror movements, but using it with the recommended system (such as Windows 2000) means it works fine.

  • the interface is indeed very good, and I think like it nearly as much as a physical board because of all it's added capabilities with 3rd party software etc.

I have to admit, though, I've always found it incredibly difficult to get the timings right in DMX Lightblayer, as (as far as I'm aware) you have to base your programing entirely on the time since the last step was made. Are there alternate ways of doing this??

  • This is soow freaking old

  • my god... not only was your Clarkson-style presentation extremely funny an very informing, but that light show was AMAZING!

so much you can do with 2 £130 scanners... haha - you've told me an awful lot about the Velleman interface, which I've wondered about seriously for a long time, now!

  • lol another nice one m8
