I live in so FL and we have lots of great weather, plus I'm on an acre, so I have little excuse other than laziness.
I do have plenty of nonGMO seeds though.
I'm waiting for the outrage of actually seeing my government telling me that I cannot grow my own vegetables (I can't believe that I actually typed that, or that we're discussing it).At that point it should be the duty of all Americans to tell the local "garden cops" who will be created FU!
@CouldNotCareLes From what I've read, the language in the bill can still be applied to private growers and can be used to prevent the trading of or selling of produce to a neighbor.
Have you seen otherwise that precludes them from applying this law to home owners?
@dgl1962 - They are looking to regulate folks who are in the business of marketing food items. This legislation is sponsored and supported by the grocery manufacturers who evidently feel threatened by farmers' markets, soup kitchens, food pantries, and community supported agriculture.
If you are making a living producing food, it may concern you.
@CouldNotCareLes Once again, the language of the bill is not limited to commercial entities and, history shows us that these laws inevitably become larger in scope than what was initially proposed (so as to make it more likely to pass).
Could you reference anywhere in the updated bill that clearly exempts private growers from this law?
If you cannot, you must assume that it will eventually be applied to us as well.
@dgl1962 - we will see when the texts of the amendments are published, likely this week.
I'm sure there will be a level of gross income one must reach to be subject to regulation.
As a commercial grower, the burden looks to be to me much the same as what the USDA and EPA currently require, and what every responsible grower should already be doing.
anyway, assume what you want ... it looks like you will be turning earth this coming spring.
NON COMPLIANCE AND RESISTANCE.
THIS KIND OF ANARCHY SURE LOOKS EVIL, DOESN'T IT FOLKS?
A GARDEN! GROWING A TOMATO!
EVIL ACTS AGAINST THE STATE......

If S510 passes,this will be illegal to do in your own yard (it sounds inane,but it's true).
If that horrendous legislation does get passed,I shall promptly plant a garden and ask you for growing advice!
Thanks

@dgl1962 - why don't you plant a garden anyway?

@CouldNotCareLes Well, that's a good question.
I live in so FL and we have lots of great weather, plus I'm on an acre, so I have little excuse other than laziness.

@dgl1962 - you should try it.
I'm guessing you will fail.

@CouldNotCareLes Try what?
I have soil here that is so dark & rich that you could jam a 2x4 into the ground and it would sprout.

@dgl1962 -
Why don't you have a garden then?

@CouldNotCareLes Like I said (just before you guessed that I would fail), I shall.

@dgl1962 - I see ... sorry.
You are waiting until they tell you that you can't.
It just boggles my mind why folks who could grow a garden now don't.

@CouldNotCareLes For me, it's because buying some veggies relatively cheaply is easier than growing, watching over and fighting insects in a garden.
The line in the sand for me will be when the government tries to tell me that I can't grow my own.
I cannot stand someone telling me what to do, especially something as natural and essential as growing an edible plant in my own yard.
I'm still shocked that the feds would consider such a tyrannical law.
dgl1962 1 year ago
@dgl1962 - Don't be shocked.
They are not considering your backyard garden at all.
You should still grow a garden though.

I do, but I still don't feel threatened.
Why would anyone would care about gardens?
Even successful gardeners buy some groceries.
