Dr.Krawetz,I dont have insurance but i really need to take this thing out.Ive had ingrown toenail for more then a year now and its really painful. How much will the treatment cost me?
Your parents should take you to a podiatrist to have the side of the nail removed permanently. You are at risk for developing a severe infection of the toe or the underlying bone. The procedure is painless because you will get a shot of anesthetic before it begins. The shot does not hurt very much.
I had half my toenail removed years ago and it's like a snapping turtle shell now. Have to sand it off and it looks great for a few weeks. The growth difference is amazing.
The skin under the nail will no longer be delicate after the procedure heals, usually 1 month. Is is tender the first two weeks after removal but you can do all normal activities immediately without restrictions.
@healthyfeetpodiatry I got a ingrown on both left big toe and right big toe . noticed swelling on the outside of the skin bit tender like a lean piece of steak would this be an ingrown nail ? Also wen i was 13 i dropped a piece of flag stone on my right foot wearing shoes and it killed the rail big toe nail but later it grew out and over my toe skin should this be removed ?
Thank you for your response. If the nail is removed, what will protect the delicate tissue underneath? Also, will there be much pain after it is done? Thank you.
Dr. Krawetz, I have had this exact surgery done to my toes many times. It worked on both of my big toes (both sides). The problem is this one side of my big toe. It has been 'burned" twice and the darn nail keeps getting ingrown. The nail is very thin and is easily cut. Is there ever a fullproof way to prevent this?
You may want to consider removing the entire nail permanently because if more nail is removed from the side, the remaining nail will be too small. The toenail is not needed to protect the toe so permanent removal is a good option.

@Superjumpmaster Yes, the nail or the affected border should be removed!
