Korea is a free, rich, developed country, but the social pressure to conform can be extremely heavy. I remember while living there, even as a foreigner, I absolutely loved how friendly and social everyone was. But at work, I was expected to work 50 - 55 hours / week, and spend time wit my coworkers OUTSIDE of work as well, I couldn't imagine being held to all of Korea's social expectations, esp for women. I can't help but feel sympathy for her, but I don't think coming to Australia would have solved her problems. I can't help but feel sympathy for her, but I don't think coming to Australia would have solved her problems. Eventually things would probably get ugly, and she would end up more depressed than before. I feel it was the right decision to send her back. Maybe after returning home she would realise that there are still people who love her and she does have a future there.

Last year I went to Korea for the first time. I dont want to hurt anybody's feelings because people there were so so extremely polite and kind. But, yes, I did sense that there was very little freedom in Korea.

Saddest thing of all is that what she wants to escape from isn't any sort of "repression" by law but societal and familial. Living in HK I see loads of people just like her who the idea of running to somewhere free, new and clean is heaven on earth. And by the way, $500 is NOT enough to live in Australia in a sustainable way for a week, you people no nothing about what you're talking about. Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world, the cheapest hotel for once night would be around $120, at the cheapest. If I were the immigration personnel I would have done in exactly same way. There's nothing wrong with traveling $500. but if what she wanted were low budget trip, she should have said so. Her story was apparently a lie. Banning the suspicious immigrants is their job, which is what exactly done at customs in Korea. Don't be offended Koreans. I am a Korean too. I'm guessing it was a major fallout with her family and she had heard about Australia from friends who lived here. The Korean population here is noticeable but Koreans and Japanese have the cultural aspect of respect and they are quite nice people and hard workers.

That is a sad episode. My ex-girlfriend had a similar story, but from Japan, so I can relate to this. In Japan and Korea the society puts a lot of pressure on people and suicide is not rare. Running away to another country prevented my girl from doing suicide. She immigrated after 2 years of study and found new ground to stay on. She became quite a happy person now. I bless Australia for this!
