Yamato.......was not only the pride of the Imperial Japanese Navy but also the symbol of the demise of the Imperial Japanese Navy that was still sticking to an old "Big Gun and Big Ship" notion during WW2.
Yamato wasn't a significant factor at all in any sea battles and got sunk so easily by a few airplanes. End of the Yamato era of imperial Japan.
Great video! I heard that a movie was made of the Yamato. Did the American battleships have flak suppression capabilities like the Yamato had with its big guns (07:00)?
@kempmt1 "Did the American battleships have flak suppression capabilities like the Yamato had with its big guns (07:00)?" the US could have made the "beehive" shells for BBs but knew they were ineffective
USS BB SoDak shot down over 25+ Japanese aircraft in 1 battle alone in 1942 and compare that to:
Yamato's final cruise, Operation Ten-Go, she, the CL Yahagi and 8 IJN DDs shot down a combined total of 10 US aircraft and killed 12 US flyers to the Yamato, Yahagi and 4 or 8 DDs lost
yamato didn't really perform. they expected too much of this obsolete weapon system (battle ships), in the end she was sunk by a few american airplanes which weren't even 1/4 her weight in metal and not nearly 1/6 the cost to build. aircraft carriers were much more effective weapons.
if you want to know about brave ships & sailors, look into taffy 3, USS Johnston (DD-557) & USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413). they fought against the yamato & the ijn center fleet. yamato was forced to turn back
@Randall82760 well i dont know if you know the movie, but, in 2009, there was a japanese movie made about the Yamato, called Otoko tachi no Yamato or Men of the Yamato. You can watch the whole movie on yt.
looking at the war footage of the yamato it really looks formidable and capable of engaging multiple capital ships

Are the sinking scenes from a movie or a documentary?

If only one of those battleships could have survived ww2. I would love to go to the IJN Yamato/ Musahi battleship museum in Japan any day.

What I wouldn't give to have seen the Yamato and/or Musashi in real life. It would've been amazing to walk the decks of a ship like that.
