  • Thanks for this video. I have the Lisle tool on the way after going through the TSB on replacing the plugs on an 07 Mustang GT. 5 came out complete, and three broke.

  • @green97probe Np my friend any time

  • I was fixing to change my plugs on my 5.4 triton and was watching videos on how to do it and realized I was watching one of your videos. At first I thought Autozone had given my wife the wrong plugs but as it turned out I have a older engine that has the older plugs. My main problem was getting the fuel rail to come loose without pulling the injectors out also. Great information video.

  • @murldewaynegreen As fare as I remember you don't have to move the fuel rail at all. If you twist the coil you should beable to pull it out.

  • I saw the paper you showed, but from you exp, are the 04 expeditions 5.4 affected by this also?

  • @dvalle07 If your motor is a three vale then yes. If you phone the dealer with your vin number they can tell you

  • @ShawnCFarm Ok, thank you every much. =)

  • There are a couple videos on youtube with people using an impact and they are coming right out. I will be getting the lisle tool just in case however. Good video.

  • soak for a few hrs tighten the plugs a quarter of a turn then loosen it back a quarter of a turn then wait 10 mins tighten a quarter of a turn again then loosen all the way works everytime(ford certified mechanic 11 yrs) been changing em left and right

  • @jonnygunnz2000 I tried all that, and was just faster to break them off and remove with tool. Another ford tec told me to use a 3/8 impact gun. He siad it works every time, but I have not did another one to try it on.

  • Will this also work on the 4.6?

  • @iliketostrokeit If its a three valve yes.

  • @ShawnCFarm - I was reading some other comments about the Lisle Tool on Amazon.com. One stated that the extraction bolt (long skinny black one) tends to strip after removing two or three broken plugs. Have you encountered that problem?

I also noticed that the Lisle website now sells those bolts separately.

Again, thanks for the all the help!

  • @TheDbartash This tool has taken out at the time 16 plugs and it is still going. Not sure why theres is messing the threads up.

  • Great video! Thank you!

Champion makes a spark plug, model 7989, that's not supposed to break when trying to remove them.

Do you have or are willing to share any opinions using the Champion plug instead of Motorcrafts?

Also, do you have any suggestions for replacing the Motorcraft Coil Overs? Those things consistently fail.

  • @TheDbartash I would have put the one peace champion in if it was my choice as you don't want them to break again. As for the coil overs we don't replace that many so far, maybe its a dealer thing where they see them before we do. If you replace with a good name brand you should be good.

  • what are the odds of my mechanic being able to change the plugs on my 99 5.4 f150?.... (i think) i blew a plug at a stoplight, i think (truck started violently shaking lol) is he gonna have to pull the dam engine out? .. love my ford but this is insanity

  • @cb7pwn You will be ok with the 1999, as its only 2004 and up. They might have to put in a thread repair as fords are bad for blowing spark plugs out

  • Great informative video. Love my Ford. Lousy design!

  • @TheSkiidog I like driving the newer fords but don't like changing the plugs on them.

  • Ford is stupid for putting these spark plugs... And i own one these... 04 250 5.4.... So far i had the mechanic pull the plugs and the truck runs really good. Subbed.

  • @Gasser4x4 They thought they fixed there problem of the spark plugs blowing out all the time, now you can't get them out, and thanks for the sub

  • i heard chevys were goin to start using similar plugs on thier new trucks or did i hear wrong?

  • @cydonianman Not sure about the newer chevs, we have had no problems with them as of yet

  • mmm anti sieze...good stuff. get it all over u. keep some 409 handy when i use that stuff.

  • @cydonianman Yes very good stuff

  • i wish i knew this before buying my 07 mustang gt. i guess if i ever need them changed i tell them to keep the car for a few days. i wont be in no damn hurry gettin it back. glad i still got my old 2000 toyota tundra pickup.

  • @shawncfarm I think all the manufactures are cutting corners in this day and age. I did find your video very helpful though. Thank you. Yesterday I tackled my plugs, I have a 2005 F150 with a 104,227 miles on it. The plugs have never been changed. I managed to get all eight of them out without breaking one of them. All I can say is a lot of patience and a can of aerokroil goes a long way.

  • Great video, very helpful. Just another problem to tack to Fords list.

  • Nice video though. Very good instruction.

  • ,at least with these kind of spark plugs" dude c'mon, Ford makes a damn good truck, I know it's a pain in the ass to change the plugs out , but it's only every one hundred thousand miles. That's not fair!

  • Everything was cool except for the comment about "I don't think I will ever buy a Ford, at least e

  • @The5150pirate Ford makes some good stuff, but I'm starting to see that anything newer then 2007 is not made like it used to be. Even dodge is in the same boat. I think I would just hunt out an older 2000 ford if I was going to buy one.

  • Ford just placing the plugs trough intake was a stupid idea! mY Wife has an 03 with the old stile plugs and its a bitch just to change them!

  • I own a 06 f-150 and needed my spark plugs changed. I took it to a ford dealer. They said 600 dollars for this job. They said maybe more if the spark plugs break. I shopped around and it was about the same everywhere else. I just decided to do them myself and chance it. I let the truck stand for two days. I then sprayed carb. cleaner. Crack them after three hours, then a little more cleaner. Three hours later i began removing them, all came out intact. But it took me 14hours total. Good luck!

  • @highs80 Your are the luckest person alive lol.

  • Autolites??? get ready for some major misfires

  • @maritimemudder That was not my first pick lol, but I get paid to do what they want me to do

  • I just broke my first plug... NICE! I'll be going to buy this tool first thing in the morning :)! Thanks for the excellent vid!

  • @22gtzero I hope I helped, and your welcome.

  • I've been expecting this on my 2004 5.4 engine. You've just scared the hell out of me!!

  • @jbr496 Some 2004's don't have this type of plug. If you bring your v.i.n number in to a good parts store they can tell you.

  • @ShawnCFarm I think my three valve motor does. It also has has that loud ticking noise from the cam phasers at idle. Things were so much easier back in my high school days when I could rebuild any small or big block Chevy in my sleep.

  • @jbr496 Those where the days when they made real trucks and cars

  • @jbr496 If its a three valve motor it dose have them

  • great vid..but have you seen the guy that gets the plugs out with the impact?? does it in a few mins too..

  • @SlayerHawkX I don't know if it works, but going to try it the next time I get one in. The worse that it could do is break the plug off or take the threads out. They make tools for fixing bolth of theses problems lol

  • Great video! How mechanically inclined does one have to be to attempt this? I've done tune-ups befores and basic car maintenance stuff. I do not want to pay for repair from the dealership. My biggest fear would be stripping the threads in the head. Is there a high chance of this happening? Would like to do this myself but am a little nervous. Thanks

  • @StJuGOL88 If you can do tune ups and do brakes, you can do this. Its abit harder as you can see but its well worth it if you can do it yourself. Theres always a chance of pulling threads out, but think that was on the older ones. Thye also sell a tool for fixing that, and its not much hard to do then this.

  • I tryed this three times and the third time worked because of this video.

  • I've seen a few tight plugs, but J.H. Christ, why?? What's wrong with the regular type of plugs everyone else uses? Surely the fact that everyone uses them should tell you something about cylinder head design..? What a pain in the arse... Great video though, and a sweet little tool too. If only the thought that went into that tool had gone into the engine design...

  • @Vorsprungdurchturbo Yes indeed. It would have saved them thousands of dallors

  • Nice informative video except for the negative Ford comments.

  • @JJ4213FL You just have to roll with it, each car company has there lemons

  • thanks man your the best went crazy when the first spark plug broke.great video

  • @pistolpete1742 Thanks for the kind words my friend

  • Use a 3/8 air impact works great am a certified fordtech and do it everyday I can do a set of 8 in 25 minutes.

  • @bigredranger8088 I'LL give that a try the next time I get one. Got nothing to lose if they break.

  • What does the shield actually do? I wonder if you could just use a really really long normal spark plug, if they make one that would be the perfect length. I once had my 318 eat the porcelain from a plug from bad spark knock, but that seems like nothing compared to the spark plug issues on these tritons.

  • @wontacceptthis I think it was to keep the carbon out but it backfired lol

  • Comment removed

  • Very Impressive!!! I like the way you took the time to document this video and work the extraction tool with one hand. I have the tool handy and so far 2 out of 8 out. I will try the impact gun with the remaining six and I'll keep you posted.

  • great video, well done!!

  • Hey Shawn, What if the porcelain doesn't break off just right? I have broken 4 off so far on my 05 F150 5.4. I've gotten 2 of the bottoms out using the Lisle tool. The third one back on the drivers side did not break off just right. I have been working on it without much success and I'm becoming more afraid that I am not going to be able to get my reverse thread tool threaded onto the bell. I went from the 3rd to the 4th and it feels the same and I'm afraid I won't get it threaded either!

  • @thesavannahlocal I had one do the same thing. I went in there with a small screwdriver and busted it out or down far enuff so the tool would work. After I busted it I used shop air to blow all the junk out before I put the tool down in there. This keeps the bits of porcelain from falling down into the cylinder when you remove the bottum. Yu could also use a punch. It helps if your airgun/blowgun has a long end on it. Let me know how you make out

  • @ShawnCFarm Hello Shawn, Well 3 days later and it is all done. I thought #3 was stripped out but will patience and perseverance I got all 8 out, 7 out of 8 broke even with 2 days soaking. Thanks a lot for your video, I could not have done it with out the Lisle Tool and the video! I appreciate your effort!

  • @thesavannahlocal I here to help. Its good to hear it all worked out.

  • all 97 and up ford v8s have this problem

  • Dude!!!!! Thanks a million!!! I heard the horror stories but decided my truck was special and the plugs wouldn't break. Soaked plugs for 2 days--they still broke off. F150 cylinder8... fun. I ordered my kit yesterday after watching this video.... I'll keep you posted! Oh, there is a class action lawsuit against Ford for this exact issue sfmslaw.com

  • @12ax7s I'm here to help

  • @ShawnCFarm Thanks again! My kit/tools arrived yesterday (couldn't find locally at a retailer) in the mail. Watching your video gave me the confidence I needed to get the job done with no problems--it wasn't easy, but with patience I was able to get the plugs out. Installed new plugs/coils and my truck runs like NEW!! It's crazy how much horsepower I was actually missing and never really noticed. Thank you again, very much!

  • @12ax7s Sweet. I love to hear that one of my videos helped out in some small way.

  • Alright but I have a different problem. I have a 1997 Ford F150 with a 1996 4.6L 2V. The problem I have is Number 4 cylinder. The hex on the plug is gone. I need to replace this plug. The plug is there the porcelain is intact just the hex part to remove it is gone. I'm think the previous owner destroyed it when attempting to replace it. Beautiful truck and runs good but recently missfires I am thinking that plug was never replaced.since new.

    HELP!

  • @kevykev38 Thats going to be kind of hard to fix. The hex is gone meaning that all the steel is missing? Is so just break the porcelain off and use a square easy out in the hole. You might need to heat this up before trying it. You might want to get someone to do it that has removed this kind of problem before because it sounds like the hex broke off because it was to tight. You might even have to remove the head, but hopefully not.

  • @ShawnCFarm WEll the sucky thing is I had the cylinder head off. To do a headgasket on it. Had plained both heads on My surface grinder. Then put haeds back on with new cams and gears. After all this work I neglected to check the ever so famous spark plug holes. Yeah I might have to take the heads off. friend of mine is gonna let me borrow his scope cam. Just to get a good look at what I'm dealing with. hopefully it's not what I think it is. Thanks for your response sir.

  • Cant thank you enough for video....i had a misfire in cylinder 1 according to Ford. Their quote was $900.00 Guys...This Works!!!!! !!!PATIENCE!!! is the key.... I purchased the Lisle plug remover, one piece plugs, soaked, took roughly 20 min per plug.... they were extremely stubborn on removal (tighten, loosen, tighten!! etc... every turn feels like your going to snap them. New plugs, new swivels, New torque wrench, grease, anti sieze, and two days... 1 out of 5 broke. Good luck.

  • @bytemyapple1 You got lucky, I only got one out in one peace lol

  • thank you. i bought the lisle tool online - going after it tomorrow after breaking off my first spark plug ever. what a joke.

  • @glAssJaw2222 Np enjoy the back ones are fun

  • @ShawnCFarm success! busted plug is out. thank you again for this vid. Its always scary going into something like this and your vid def gave me confidence. my advice for a 1st timer: 1.) do not be afraid to crank that pusher down. once you think its good enough, do another half turn. get that crap pushed down. 2.) make sure the puller has a good grip - i needs to make GOOD THREADS in order to pull 3.) have patience...it will work. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO PLUGS WITHOUT THIS TOOL. I was arrogant.

  • @glAssJaw2222 Your welcome and I have alot more helpfull vids on here lol

  • @ShawnCFarm i hope i never have to watch them. haha.

  • On the older cars we use a square easyout. Most times it works well. I don't think this newer tool would work for that

  • @ShawnCFarm Thanks very much! :-) Laura

  • Hey Shawn great vid! A question: do you know if this technique would work for an older Ford? I have a 97 Ford Fiesta which is some sort of British model I think, and I've broken two plugs already trying to take them out. Apparently these models boast the same plug-freeze issue, but the tool says it's for 2004 and later.

  • @lehyslop On the older cars we use a square easyout. Most times it works well. I don't think this newer tool would work for that

  • Man youre an ace. Not too many mechanics will show people stuff like this. I think the Ford engineer who thought this was a good idea fell on his/her head. Do you know if the Crown Vic is affected by this? I have heard that if the plugs are not torqued to the 12ft/lbs required, they launch out of the head pulling the threads with them and breaking the COP.

  • @Sidewinder9877 I think thats the older ones. They used to pull the threads out of the head and smash the coil all too bits. Thats a different tool used on them lol. I like helping people out as much as I can

  • @ShawnCFarm Ya I heard it was because of improper torquing of the spark plugs. They loosen then blow out of the hole. I hope those God-aweful 3-piece plugs are not on the 04 CVPI I plan on getting.

  • @Sidewinder9877 Note sure but I bet you could call the ford dealer up and find out.

  • Good thing I found this video, I thought I was going to have to remove the head. Great video.

  • @joe868806LA I think the first ford spark plug that I did with the threads ripped out of the head we did take the head off. If only they had theses tools back then

  • I have this 5.4 engine and al 11 plugs broke in the head. This started a domino effect. Next, the pistons cracked, the con rods shattered, the crank throws turned to dust, but miraculously, the oil pan remained intact. This I put on the Kubota lawn tractor. I saved enough money to fly to Bermuda, but was mugged and all of my money was stolen. Well, enough to replace the Ford plugs. What does Ron Jeremy drive?

  • just one more reson to not get a ford

  • @dstnr well if you got alot of money or can do it yourself

  • Shawn great video. Im trying to do this change out my self and i went to do the first one tonight and the jam nut came off as in your video. Then the spark plug broke while trying to work it out with the use of some pb blaster. One do you believe pb is not proper for this situation and two the spark plug broke off further up not as shown in your video. What would you recomened, to use the pusher? Or try chipping some of it out w/ a punch or something like that first? Thanks for your help.

  • @jmscollinsiii1 You need it broken off flush with the peace thats in the head. The porcelain I mean. You need to get something down in there to knock it off flush. A small pry bar might work. Just remember to blow the hole out with shop air before you try and put the removel tool down in there to get rid of any peaces that might get in the way or fall in the hole

  • @jmscollinsiii1 If its only sticking out abit it should be fine

  • Excellent video! I bought my '05 5.4 F-150 recently and it's due for a tune up and/or spark plugs (~60k miles now), and the local dealership said each broken spark plug costs $100 extra (each) for extraction. Since they virtually guaranteed a couple plugs would be broken, it makes perfect sense to do it myself. I'm very mechanically inclined, and your video took away any doubt. Thank you!!

  • @erik996 No problem, I make videos to help people out. You should tell your Ford dealer to watch the video lol

  • Is FORD still using these genius heads and spark plugs? What year did they quit. Maybe I should just buy a GM product.

  • Yep about to have this done EXCEPT! The Ford Dealership wanted to charge me $400 for the Tool and $600 for the work, and heres the kicker they keep the tool! Did some research tool cost what $75 on average....I will no own another ford in my life, Ford thanks for screwing us over.

  • @NavarreKiteboarding Wow is all I can say.

  • Shawn, this is great "how to" video. We have been selling the Lisle 65600 since they first came out (before that we sold many of the Rotunda 303-1203's). We have a blog with information that the manufacturer routinely sends customers to. With your approval, we would like to add your video to our blog to help our customers have a better understanding about how to successfully complete this job. BTW Google "Ford's Bad Design" for the blog I mentioned. Thanks, Dennis

  • @DenLorsTools Sure I don't have a problem with that. The more people I can help the better. I'm glad you like it.

  • Very informative video Shawn I know now not to buy a Ford thanks Calvin.

  • @thewelp I'm glad you liked it my friend

  • thanks most people post their problems not the solution.

  • @foop1 Thanks for your coment

  • what a pain in the ass that must be a recall on fords ? i can't see them getting away with that

  • @boardingpass04 No recall on that lol.

  • This is why I wont work on most new vehicles there is always some kind of retarded flaw to make your job hell.

  • @kowyn2 Yes and always seem to get all cut up downing so.

  • sean, i love ur vids, allways have. im havin major trouble with my cavalier, please watch my vid im currently uploading, and tell me what u think thanks man!!!!

  • @braydensdeals Ok np. I'll head over there now. If its not uploaded yet just send it to me or share it and I'll watch it and try to help

  • what a POS construction! =P good thing to know

  • I love it! Thanks for sharing this.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Thanks for watching

  • Thanks you saved me I now know that I am not going to even try this. too much because of a design flaw old 302's any day old school is the way.. selling my truck for an older mod. Great info and detail thanks again..

  • @22eagleone Np and glad you like it.

  • Why didn't you put in the updated 1 piece Motorcraft plugs or the 1 piece Champion plugs? Good vid.

  • @DrJohnBecker I trusted my parts man at work. I only saw the one peace ones after the fact. I think they will come out again without a problem. I put lots of anti-seize on them.

  • Well that just proves to me even more that Ford is garbage!

  • @fredtflail I think they all have had there one bad car lol

  • @fredtflail Or you could get a chevy and have front end issues, or a dodge with tranny problems. Pick your posion right?

    Good video.

  • @mark9021

    Hhahahahah ya.

  • What do you think of this : Im looking for some one who can take and show foks what will and they will need at the time of a E.M.P. inpact this would be very help full to most of thr guys who can work on car and trucks.I went into some thing else

years ago so Im not up to date. 1 What parts would guys like me need 2.what to have on stand by and how to store parts so the EMP cant get to them.Sir would do you think?

  • @RoflmaoAtSheepeople A pre mid 90's IDI diesel is the newest thing that will be runnin after an EMP.

  • @RoflmaoAtSheepeople If you can't get a older diesel then get one with a carb and standard transmission. You'll need to store an Alternator ,starter, battery , a compleat distributor wires cap rotor etc. Even learn how to wire it up without all that wire harness that most engines have. Store in a steel box or something like that. My old tractor will start without any battery as long as you can push it fast enuff to bum start it. With a standard trans you don't need a starter.

  • One of Fords much beter ideas yea right leave it to Ford to come up with shit like this. and thankyou for the infoeramtion I was thinking about a04or05 Mustang Gt make me wonder now if it worth it with this in it.

  • @mutt1256 Well the plugs do last a very long time. If you figger out the cost of changing them every 30,000km to 130,000 to 150,000 its prob not that bad even if you can;t get them out easy.

  • The most stupid and too complicated thing I have ever seen for such and easy task on most of the cars! What a hell, ford!?

  • @SpunkyRabbit Its all about making you go back to where you got your car lol

  • I'm a die-hard Ford guy - I own an '07 with a 3-valve 5.4L, but this design was absolutely pathetic.

  • @TheTerminator310 Well at least you know what you'll be getting into before you have a tune up done. There shouldn't be a problem if anti-seize is put on for the next tune up, but its just that first one. If they would have put anti-seize on them at the factory everything would be good.

  • what a pain in the neck...

  • @dirtTdude Ya it was fun lol. Hows the cabin going ?

  • @ShawnCFarm I've moved to Oregon, that puts the cabin 247 miles from me, so im not getting out there as often as i would like.

  • @dirtTdude That kind of sucks after all that work

  • @ShawnCFarm yeah, it does. you have no idea... I've been here 8 months and still haven't made any friends, there's nothing to do for fun but work and there is only one boat dealership in the whole fucking state. i have loads of timber, i could start another one but its not really about the cabin. if you know what i mean.

  • @dirtTdude I know what you mean. Its hard meet new people with the same intrests. The theres people that want to come over and be friends that you don't want to lol.

  • Thank God my Ford is a 79 F250 super cab!

  • @dunn98632 Yes. You can get right in that one to work on it. I used to sit under the hood while working on them.

  • @ShawnCFarm hey ,ever tryed running it up hot , takie the air intake hose off and the squirt regular water in watchin it not to stall, its a way to get it decarbonized used by ford ,try it next time you get this job.

  • @transdetendal Dose it work for theses. We used to do that all the time with the older cars with carbs to get rid of spark knock and ping

  • @ShawnCFarm well i havent had a problem yet, and the lamda dosent seem to have isues with it ,BUT i havent worked on a us car of newer date then 76 , its all european models or yunger us like neon shits and such. it has worked and thinking of carbon buildup it should be a charm

  • I'd try to use dielectric grease and see if that would prevent the problem?

  • @jet62095 You could try that, as long as it will take the heat. I put anti-seize on all before I put them back in. If they would have only did this at the factory there would be no problem taking them out.

  • Informative thanks.

  • @vashguud Np glade you like it

  • after watching this whole video i will never buy a ford, dont get me wrong there great trucks, but they just seem to hard to work on, heck i just changed out the plugs in my dodge ram with a 318 and 270,000 miles on it and in the time it took you to do one plug i could have done all four on one side of the engine and start on the other four before you even got the first plug out

  • @marshall0792 Yup. Its bad and takes alot of time. The motor is just jamed in there.

  • i think ford went with this design because they dont want people to work on their cars anymore, ford wants you to bring your car to them so they can do all the work and charge you for it

  • @marshall0792 Very ture. They don't want people doing there own work.

  • ngk are single peice

  • @backwoods3214 They would be good ones to put back in

  • thats a pretty stupid setup, nice video though haha

  • @fnaguitarplayer9 Thanks and hope to make many more

  • Great video Shawn! I've never encountered this situation. What a completely idiotic design. I'm embarrassed to admit I used to work for Ford for 18 years. But it was in the electronics division not the engine division lol

  • @edzgarage No problem I don't hate you lol. Its all getting harder to work on. They just don't give you any room to work so you end up ripping hafe the car apart to get at one thing.

  • Shawn,

Mix up a batch of ATF and Acetone, %50-%50 of each and try that. I know a few misguided Ford guys who claim this doesn't completely resolve the problem, but does reduce the amount of broken plugs.

Of course letting it sit over night helps too...

This is why I'm a Chevy guy..

    J...

  • @jdouglasfisher I'll try that the next one I have to do. I found after two or three that it was just faster to break it off, taking care not to pull the threads out of the head. Then use the tool. I had it down to 15 mins a plug and I think I could get them out faster yet lol

  • Way to go Ford. Thats right up there with the cruise control units catching on fire or the newer Powerstrokes shooting fire out the tail pipe. The only thing they ever did right was create the 300-six with the 7 main bearings.

  • @mdk70454 Just sweet is all I can say.

  • Very helpful, now I know what imma be dealin with in the future

  • @MechanicDan1 Yup, so if you get one in that your 5/8 plug socket will not fit you will know what is in store for you lol

  • Jesus H Christ! All that work for a fuckin spark plug! The only fords i'll ever own will be pre-2000.
