@flores1091 First when I am done painting and getting prepped to polish it out, I wetsand with 1200, then 1500, then 2000. Then I go straight to the Meguiars ultimate compound with a high speed rotary polisher and a foam finishing pad. I don't bother with the rubbing compound at all. If I stopped wetsanding at 1200 or 1500, then yes I would use the rubbing compound, but sanding to 2000 and polishing eliminates the swirl marks from the rubbing compound. I got zero swirl marks in the finished job
looks really good...i have a 97 honda crv green on black rims. im going to paint it black gloss. and tint the tail and headlights and completly black it out

I am gettting huge amounts of orange peel on my car with rustoleum. Yours looks great But i think I am putting it on too thick. Did you put on very light coats and what was your thinner to paint ratio? Did you wet sand to get the orange peel out? I am trying that and it seems like the rustoleum is hard to sand out. Thanks
@GOODolAMERICANMUSCLE its only hard to sand out the orange peel if your too thick. Here's what I do, entire quart into a sealable plastic paint bucket(cheap one they sell with cover almost every paint dept.) Buy a wisk like your gonna scramble some eggs :). Stick it in a drill. Mix the paint with no mineral spirits and watch the bubbles. TONS OF EM. Pour in some spirits, mix on high speed, stop, watch bubbles. Add spirits until when the drill stops, the bubbles dissapear within 5-10 seconds.Done
@GOODolAMERICANMUSCLE Then just paint thin coats, ring the roller out in the paint tray. its alot easier to lay a few thin coats than it is to sand out one uneven thick coat. Two coats, then light wetsand with 800-1200, repeat, repeat, repeat. Now your ready for final finish. Wetsand with 1500 until most of orange peel is gone, then finish it off with 2000 grit. Its easy to wetsand too much so be careful. Then its time to polish it out and shine shine shine
@Mikeandwendy74 Did you use a hardner,if so,what kind and what ratio? I test painted a tailgate using Krylon paint. It has been about three months and I can still
but finger nail marks into the paint. I'm concerned about pit marks from just about anything in the air (ie bugs, sand or whatever) . Does Rustoleum have the same problem? Thanks for all the great videos it is all good stuff.
@newcar011 I did not use hardener but I would have if I had more than 50 bucks :) just kiddin, I didnt have any, and one year later with this stuff no problems. Its pretty durable.
nice work can you use meguiars ultimate compound bye hand if you work on small sections at one time ? i have a random buffer but its a wool pad? please help thanks
@MrNycbasketball give it a shot, I bought a variable speed rotaty buffer, I wanted to learn how to use it. Random orbital buffers are not as aggressive as rotary buffers and are much safer to use, but take alot longer to get the same result. Run the orbital with some ultimate compund on a section of the hood light pressure back and forth move it around for 30 seconds, then you will have an idea of how your buffer is working
@dceeserkills definetely patience, super thin coats, and dont worry if you screw it up here and there, if you do, sand it down and repaint, its not hard to do, it just takes patience
yea im planning on painting mine this week cant tell you how much negativity i got from people i really hope mine comes out as good as yours cant wait to prove everybody wrong
Thanks for the video! I have GMC with clear coat peel, I am going to try this I will spray it. i picked up a spray gun for $10 at HF. Ace Hardware rustoleum smoke gray for the middle and rustoleum charcoal gray top and bottom. The bottom of my truck is rusty I am going to sand it down. HF had some raddle can truck bed liner I am going to spray the bottom with first then paint it. I am hoping it will give it the rock chip guard look, Can't wait to see what the maroon looks like on your truck
You Sir are by far the greatest shadetree painter we have ever seen ... from your vid were going to now go and paint either a Jeep CJ-7 or a 74' Duster .... We're jealous of your great work :) ... Take care and best wishes
@claypoolhill hey thanks man I am uploading a video of one of the panels I just shot with rattlecan crystal clear coat check it out, it might give it a little extra protection :)
hell im impressed ! i been a refinish tech for years , but when i was like 16 i painted a couple with something like rustoleum but with a spray gun never tried to buff though looks good
i ve been hearin about this for awhile now i see how good yours came out i want to do it to my car great job what was your sanding process from before you but pant on to finish and did you say 50/50
you did a very nice job, thats one of the best rustoeleum paint jobs ive ever seen, you said that its hard to buff, try a cotton buffing pad, ive had to buff out scratches on an old erothane hood and thats what i grab. those foam ones are good but cotton is better in my book
@pete6754 he is buffing the paint its self not a clear coat, thats why if you put a clear coat over it it will protect it and you wont have to keep buffing it out....
Well, all I can say is this, when I pull up on the side of someone with a brand new car, its a cryin shame how much better mine looks, the black is like a mirror.
THANK YOU this just made my year!...i just bought a 94 mustang GT and this is what im goin wit (except im goin gloss black :] ) im sanded down and is gonna begin soon..im on the tightest budget ever and this is godsend! thank you sooo much...plz post more!
im inspired! just painted my wife's 92 sentra. i used my hvlp spray gun. rustoleum gloss white reduced it 1:1with paint thinner . it went on real well. now im waiting a couple of days for it to harden. then ill cut and buff. looks sharp as it is, i just want that extra shine!
so clean. i needa sand and buff my car out. i did the rusto smoke gray last year in aug i believe. i rolled mine on, but since then i use a spray gun now. (ive painted like 7 cars with a spray gun) see some of my videos.
i posted some videos of my mustang i painted with a $27. gallon of rustoleum safety red...i sprayed my mustang with a cheap $15. spray gun i bought @ harbor freight...last 2-3 coats i did a 50/50 mix with a cheap wal-mart paint thinner...it smoothed my paint job out alot..i'm going to let it cure for awhile before i wet sand it with 1500-2000 grit. i'm really happy with with 50/50 mix it really made a big difference in texture...i spray a test fender with just the 50/50 mix & it looks amazing...
i paint a mustang with rustoleum gloss black outside in my front yard with i spray gun....a guy seen the car & bought it..when i was done....lol i really didn't get to enjoy how good it came out...lol i told my buddy & he started painting cars with rustoleum too...he said the paint gets shinier & smoother as it cured the next couple days. told me the white is blinding...too! thanks for the polishing tip....i just picked up a $500. mustang that needed a fender & hatch..i'm painting it safety red.
That looks awesome dude. I can't wait for my car to look great as well. I'm up to four coats using a 2:1 paint to thinner ratio. Runs like crazy but works and dries kind of fast. I'm going to try and mix a pearl powder and see the results with that.
If you go with 6-8 coats you'll be good. After the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th coat, make sure you wetsand nice and smooth. Anything less than 1200 wet sandpaper will remove alot of paint, I went with 1500 and then 2000, because I would rather wetsand more with fine paper, than use rough paper, do a quick job, and take off the layer I just put on. PATIENCE is the key, which I have ZERO, but im trying :)
That's the thing. I have a z24 and it's all curvy about it. Only flat surfaces are the trunk, hood and parts of the fenders. I wet sanded with 600 after two coats, read that I should wetsand with 800 after four coats then 1000-1500 after six coats. I don't have patience either so I'm pretty sure my paint job looks pretty horrible right now. I'm just up to four coats and I'm going to let it harden up for a week before I do anything else.

ok i have a question. how exactly do you polish?
Do you need to use rubing compound first? and then the polish? or just use polish on foam pad after wet sand?

@flores1091 First when I am done painting and getting prepped to polish it out, I wetsand with 1200, then 1500, then 2000. New cars have orange peel because they are painted by robots.
It gets sprayed with primer and farther down the line it gets crappy single stage.
Saw a new Mercedes and it looked like it was rattle canned.
It's a dying art. No integrity in building anything.
Harbor freight sucks. Get it at Sears with warranty $50
HF stuff always chokes. My $35 electric pump lasted about five uses and then fried. Wouldn't trust a hoist or engine stand with my life either...
Thanks for the great info.
