I've considered every version of this hanuntingly artistic song, and Rosanne's is by far the best. I guess Don Gibson's "pop" version is next best, and I also like Mary Ramsey and the Healers. But Rosanne's arrangement, with its incredibly subtle and soulful guitar work is a masterpiece.
Rosanne sang this tonite with John, from her band, and she acknowledged Bruce and she sang it together first. So, of course, I had to look it up. If you get the opportunity, go see her. She shook my hand on the way out. What a wonderful performance from one of my alltime favs! Love you, Rosanne!
My favorite color is red...and if it's not your favorite color....well then you should be cleaning bear shit at the North pole....get it...? Of course the Boss is a great....we have had lots of great artists, but it all boils down to appreciation of music and personal taste...variety is the spice of life...and thank goodness we don't all like the same thing....what a boring life that would be..appreciate the different times and styles
MOR version. I'll settle for Don. Voices okay, but mixed down, I wonder why. Phoned in their performances. I'm gonna go see if King Elvis took this great song on.
Beautiful song, beautifully sung by Rosanne and the Boss. The whole album "The List" is wonderful. Hope there will be more, I think Johnny's list was fairly long. Bring it on!
I love every selection of Rosanne's "List"... this song is a favorite of many - live long enough and you'll understand the title. My opinion is that this is Rosanne's best performance of this song - she's done it tv shows, radio and concerts but this version is flawless. Thanks for posting a wonderful piece of American music history. We love and miss your daddy, Rosanne - Semper Fi
Great version of this song. I think sounds a little like Lyle Lovett especially in the chorus. Hi Leo! Just shows you how well written this song was originally so as to lend it self able to this wonderful arrangement.
Rarely is a cover version better than the original but this one, by Roseanne Cash and Bruce Spreenstein, in my opinion is better than Don Gibson's version and even surpasses Johnny Cash's version. This is one of the best written songs ever - written by Peter Hampton and Hal David. What great symbolism! I wish this song was played on the radio more, but the good ones rarely are. The vocals are outstanding and they have successfully made this classic even better.
LIke her father, she has a haunting voice. He must have been so proud of her. Why don't the radio stations play her more? I love Roseanne Cash!! I always thought she had the most beautiful voice in country or pop, but why didn't she become a superstar? I'll never understand it.
@lrd9999 I enjoy the original as well, and being a fan of 50's and 60's era music I like the background "gimmicks" so prevelant in music of that generation. I guess I like the meloncholy feeling of this version as it feels more heartfelt and sad rather than an upbeat sad song.
Still, great songs covered by many different artists will appeal differently to many people.
Great input though lrd9999, good to have respectful feedback on youtube for a change.
@harri3601 It's kind of an apples to oranges comparison. This is great for anyone who can't deal with the background gimmicks that were expected on a country record in 1961 ( ... bom bom bom ... ). But Don Gibson's singing was stunningly good, I can't imagine anyone improving on it. The great thing about a song like this is that you have so many versions from which to choose. This reminds me a little of Springsteen's very cash-like "I'm on Fire".
Ahh, so divine. Roseanna's voice couldn't be complimented better than that soulful background voice of .... Springsteen. Not sure it it's just me, but in this particular song, Bruce's voice is hauntingly similar to her dad's. Was it meant to be that way, or just a coincidence? Regardless, the song touches my soul.
BarbedHook...... Firstly your spelling is horrendous. If you are going to take a cheap shot at Bruce Springsteen at least try and spell his name right ! This is a good version of a great song. And as for Bruce.......go see him live.

This rendition is horrendous the positive responses are typical of todays sycophantic culture theres no soul its lifeless Springstien is way overrated he cant sing and if Roseanne hadnt been born to John Cash another limited performer this version would never have been conceived the list is being trashed
Well barbed, i guess i'll see just how long it takes for you to get posted on you tube singing. When you say Springsteen is overrated and cant sing, hmmmmm i guess his millions of fans and all over the world probably say to themselves before going to see him in concert" damn, he cant sing but im going to see him again for the 5,6, 7, and more times.
You might not like his style, but to say he cant sing. LOL.
being a good recording/performing artist is not just about how good your voice is (which fyi Bruce does actually have). you need to have personality most of all! Bruce can rock a stadium and get people on their feet. Bruce also get's alot of credit for his song writing which he also deserves. do you have any musical qualifications BarbedHook? i'm interested to know.
She and Bruce Springsteen really nailed this song. I really think this song is outstanding and it is one of my favorites from "The List." I hope she makes a "List 2."
