  • This one and the Kingston Trio's version are my favorite ones.

  • Judith's voice is so amazing,I really like this version,But love both versions !

  • beautiful voice

  • Judith's voice is one of the best ever. What a class act she has been. The Seekers were one of the best groups ever.

  • What a voice!

  • still great

read FIRST LOVE written by PETRA MARIA SCHEID

    at amazon com

    keep on dreamin

  • beautiful voice..............

  • Peter Paul and Mary were great, but they were a step behind The Seekers,Their song are so clear

  • This is awesome, I love Clint Eastwood and General Saint's Stop That Train didn't realise where it came from

  • Damn, I was looking for the proclaimer's song.

  • PPM、キングストントリオとは違った感じだけどいいです。63歳仙台在住

  • God I love this version by Judith. What range and in-your-soul presence.

  • This was perfection. Her haunting voice and the back up.Just perfect

  • I agree. The Seekers are superior to PPM, Kingston Trio, Brothers 4, We Five. They had great songs and Judith Durham is one of the great female folksingers of all time and very attractive. Another good version of this song is the Peter & Gordon version. My fave version is probably Bobby Bare.

  • I'm American. The Seekers are far better than the versions by American seekers.

  • This is the song that tuck me to bed when i was a child. My mom use to sing this to me. And when i was away from home, I listen to this song, and get's me upset and home sick. I love you mom. Judith you voice always helps to calm me down and relaxes me. The Seekers,. Simply AWESOME!

  • I have read many comments about the quality of MS Durhamm's voice. For positive comments, I certainly agree. I don't think it is noticed much, because for her it was so effortless, but she has an incredible range. This song shows it very well. Also, when the boys hit the harmony with her, it is a unique and peerless sound. This is part of why they are loved by so many of us with good musical taste.

  • I find it childish and disgusting that some misguided people find it necessary to turn a musical composition into a competition. The Seekers interpretation of this classic song is just as valid as any other artists version. Judith Durham's voice is superb and lends a haunting quality to this song. Those who want to criticize because they don't like this version of the song are being immature and foolish. It's NOT a competition, it's the expression of a musical idea. Grow up!

  • there getting ready to roll the sailer on the album cover.it was military payday back when this picture was taken.

  • If you don't like something, say nothing. This version was one of the best. Especclailly Judith with her voice. It is such a shame that people really do not know what they are sayng, and/or hearing.

  • I think this a blokes song, and has more meaning sung by such, do like the seekers though....pity they were aussies ))

  • haunting and sorrowful... beautifuk too

  • Beautiful, just beautiful.

  • So very beautiful!

  • my moms favorite song love her and miss you Mom. xxx RIP you have earned it> Tommy

  • what a voice!!

  • Hey gunnari14, if being an Australian or an Australian in the 60's and loving this group is gay then yes I'll proudly be gay.

  • @1939PlymouthRatRod The Journeymen - 500 miles was much better, also they didnt made this song,

  • lovely version of this song

  • Super song with a super group! Thanks for posting this timeless treasure!

  • Oh man , das is ne tolles lied , weils mich an mein cousin erinnert :(

Er hat es mir mit 7 aufn keyboard beigebracht und ehm ja das wird es niewieder geben :(

Er hat sich zu stark verändert :(:(

  • PP&M jumped on the '60s protest bandwagon, The Seekers did not. And that made all the difference. PP&M got the worship treatment, The Seekers did not. Truth is The Seekers leave PP&M in the dust and Mary Travers can't touch Judith Durham. That said, that we are comparing two such wonderful groups is all the testimony the 1960s music scene could ask for. What a decade.

  • I am Danish so i don't have to be neutral. The seekers were the best and still is from my point of wiev.

  • I don't know why but every time I listen to this song, I just have to bust out a "gangsta" rap song next...........

  • Both groups were wonderful. The seekers brought joyous, beautiful & socially aware songs (I'd like to teach the world to sing...) romantic (e.g. I know I'll never find another you--sung at my wedding in 2004--good stuff!) But I don't know (hopefully my Australian friends will educate me--not flame me--Peter, Paul and Mary Marched on Washington, Marched with MLK and lent their presence and performances to peace & social justice in ways that the seekers didn't. I won't choose between them.

  • @daveymars I maybe wrong with this, but I think The Seekers were more about presenting the song. Whereas the likes of Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, etc, were more about the message

  • that's true, we should try to enjoy all the different renditions of this same song, the same song sang by the same singer at different location and different time of their lives may also varies in tune and sometimes tempo too.

for u guys who may like the similar kind of songs- if you dont mind, let me introduce to you, "blowing in the wind" n "where have all the flowers gone", try it, hope u guys will like that, happy listening, thanks to YouTube, its has brought to me, much happiness.

  • This is a beautiful version. PP&M did a great version also. Why argue about which is better, enjoy the one you love.

  • There is no female voice like Judith Durham on the planet.....just take some time to listen to that clarity and style.

  • Indeed, may God continue to bless and keep her...a wonderful woman.

  • ich hoffe mal der eine da hat sich nur verklickt ;)

  • Grab the audio from this clip at tubepull doht cohm.

  • I think that each group did the song differently, neither one is any better than the other, just different and both beautiful.

  • I had forgotten how hauntingly beautiful the Seekers did this song. Judith's voice in this song ANGELIC.Thank-you for sharing your video with me.

  • Me gustan las dos versiones pero la voz de Judith Durham hace la diferencia.

  • Outstanding! The way she uses high vocal notes for this song is absolutely amazing. It gives the song a whole different feel, and redefines somewhat the spirit of the lyrics. The arrangement is superb, not exploitative or lazy at all. The Seekers are completely underrated.

  • @gunnari14

    Aw bless.

  • @Dyynamo You i think you hold the record for the least liked comment on youtube.

  • @shikatema4 I think you'll find that its Gunnari's comment that has all the negative votes. My comment stands at +3 at the present time. :-)

  • @gunnari14

Judging by you're attitude and vocabulary, You must be a fan of 80's rock.

The reason you can't find the song you're most likely looking for, is because it's name is actually

"I'm Gonna Be" By The Proclaimers.

Just because it says "500 miles" over and over again in the song, doesn't mean it's the name of the song.

And just because you didn't find the song you're looking for doesn't mean you have to insult the music others like. That is called common courtesy..

  • @ifixmixers just opening my mind man. you dont have to write a goddamn book to comment my oppinion

  • @ifixmixers

Just because gunnari14 made the comment he did, doesn't mean you have to tar all fans of 80's rock with the same brush.

    That is called common curteousy.

  • @QueenReigns1

You're right, QR, I humbly stand corrected in my wrongs.

I'm a person who survived the 1980's as a backup musician for successful bands, And one of my Peeves of the 80's Was the tendency we had to condemn what didn't instantaneously spark our interest. I apologize for my over reaction.

  • @gunnari14 try searching for the proclaimers .. I think that's the song you want to find ;-) enjoy.

  • @gunnari14 The Journeymen - 500 miles

Real men singing..... not a girl

seriouly listen to it, far better from all version

  • @gunnari1 friggin DS....

  • Yeah, well, there's a real difference between "cool" and "wonderful". That's alright, though. I'm sure there are other people out there who don't know how to appreciate real music and can't help but to open up their trap to say something rude.

  • Being an American, I have to add my two cents to the earlier discussions: Although I like Peter, Paul and Mary, they are not on the same high, elite level as The Seekers. Apparently some have never heard a lady sing in a soprano voice before - it's flawless and uplifting once you get used to it.

  • @theboze1959

In true Christmas panto style, "Oh no it isn't" lol.

Even if this song doesn't float your boat though, their rich and varied repertoire is far superior to Peter Paul and Mary. Tom Springfields writing ensured that. I don't think P P and M had any songs as good as The Carnival Is Over or I'll Never Find Another You or Georgie Girl, and thats despite Bob Dylan and John Denver writing their songs.

  • @Dyynamo Except Tom Springfield didn't write the tune to The Carnival Is Over. He borrowed it from an old Russian folk song, Stenka Razin. Apart from that I agree he produced excellent stuff quite uniquely tailored to The Seekers talents.

  • @Dyynamo That is just BS--although I like the Seekers-this version cannot touch the one of Peter, Paul, and Mary. Right-even though Bob Dylan and John Denver were writing their songs. GTFREAKOUT

  • @theboze1959

Peter Paul and Mary aren't anywhere near the quality of the Seekers and Judith Durham's voice is just as perfect today as she was in the 60's. You're in a very small minority thinking the way you do

  • @thebozo1959 You're a tool... with no appreciation for the superior vocal skills of Judy Durham

  • @theboze1959 . I personally love, but I have found that a lot of people are unsure the 1st time they hear it , as it isn't what they normally expect for the song or from Judith . My wife had the same view, but after several listenings it she came to like it. I think it is one of those versions that grow on you the more you hear it

  • @theboze1959 I like both the Seekers and the Peter Paul and Mary versions of this song, but Judith Durham's voice is haunting beautiful. An,d it fair to say that when it comes to judging voices, the only taste you have is located in your mouth.

  • @theboze1959 All I ask myself after reading your comment is...how many times have you come back to this "awful" song with something to say? It's nice to know that you have such an opinion...and it's very possible that other people may agree with you...but that is why they are elsewhere listening to those songs. Go join them ;)

  • Voice of an angel. Brings tears to my eyes.

  • I'm a 60's Queenslander and this is sheer magic - I remember watching them on an old Astor tele - thank god their music is still around.

  • I do not know much about The seekers, but this is great song,it tune is great its fesinates the listner. This tune has been copied by indian musicians, they often do this they are habitual.

  • To my Aussie friends ..... Were the Seekers on par with Peter Paul and Mary? Or where they far ahead.? Being a 60's child, I think you folks had the better group.

  • @gto66solstice08

I'm a Brit so I'm neutral here. I think The Seekers were streets ahead or Peter Paul and Mary.

  • @Dyynamo Thumbs up just for using "streets ahead"

  • @Dyynamo Thumbs up just for using "streets ahead"

  • @Dyynamo I'm an American, and I will back your opinion 100%. I greatly appreciate most versions of this song. There have been many great groups & singers over the years and I do not like to say one is "better" than the other.

However I will say that the Seekers are THE most flawlessly perfect group I have ever heard. These four remarkable Aussies seem to always be at their best and I cannot help but be drawn to that unique and superb Seekers sound.

  • @gto66solstice08 Where this particular song is concerned, I feel that PP & M did a better job. But.....one cannot deny Judith's beautiful voice and The Seekers harmonising in most of their tunes. They are still brilliant!!

  • @gto66solstice08 I think the problem was the Seekers didn't have a very pro-active producer/manager or maybe they just thought a few hits were good enough. Peter Paul & Mary made a gazillion songs & alot more exposure. So I think it was all in the handlers. I personally like Judith voice, it's like an angel's. So sweet, pure & clear. But I also loved Puff the Magic Dragon & I Dig Rock & Roll Music, so both groups had their forte's.

  • @gto66solstice08 close contest but I think the Seekers edge it. Judith's voice is quality

  • Jerryig62 You are right!

  • Absolutely awesome. You just can not get music like this today. We as a society have lost the qualities of magic and harmony. Listen to judiths voice , it sings by it's self. Beautiful.

  • Probably the best version of this song. The Seekers secret is that the boys provided a strong platform from which Judith soared.

  • @ConnieRadbone I agree and this song has many great versions!

  • The Seekers are amazing.

    Judith has a GREAT voice.

Thank you for posting this wonderful song.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Great song.

    Thank you for posting.

    Thumbed!

  • What a voice she has!

  • So many good versions of "500 Miles", that I don't want to disrespect any version by saying one version is better than another.

This version by the Seekers IS particularly haunting and memorable though, and has that typical Seekers' magic of flawless instrumentals and perfect harmony to Judith Durham's pitch-perfect voice. Definitely one of the top versions.

The PP&M and Bobby Bare versions also grab my attention too.

  • @63DW89A I agree the Bobby Bare version is excellent

  • SIMPLY WONDERFUL MUSIC AND VOICES

  • The best vocalist to sing this classic song; although if I were producing the song, I would incorporate some of the verses Bobby Bare does in his version--THEY explain the song while the "shorter" version by the Seekers, Peter Paul and Mary, the Brothers Four, etc. leave the rationale of the song vague.

  • Surprisingly good, even if I still prefer Peter, Paul and Mary singing this.

It is really worth comparing the two versions

  • i love this song and my Grandpa loves this song. it represents his life in so many ways

  • Think it you sang it wrong Judith its not like opara.

Your softer voice it would have been really good.

  • ^0^...

  • Perfect rendition of a beautiful, haunting song.

  • This is the best voice I've ever heard for this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She has such a great voice.

  • I love the Seekers. but please keep religion out of it @neotronic.

People like me don't want to read this shit.

  • @59whiterabbit whats wrong with "Gold Bless...

  • @59whiterabbit Yeah I think he was being jokingly religious, man.

  • i think peter and gordon sing it better but she is a great singer and it's good

  • great!!!!!!!!

  • Five Hundred Smiles

  • Mary Travers sounded better singing this song, but The Seekers are still amazing.

  • The beautiful voices touched. Thank you from the sky in Japan

  • this version is so beautiful and moving that it makes the strongest of men weep

  • No one can reach those high notes like Miss Durham

  • Aussie foreva.

  • All praise to the GODDESS Judith !!!!!!!!

  • Wow!

  • And while we are praising Judith let us not forget... in the days when this album was recorded there was no auto-tune, no chorus FX, no harmonizers, and multitrack was in its infancy. Thus she is singing "dry" (nothing but vocal chords and a mic) and in all liklihood this track was recorded live in studio - no overdubs. Impressive, no??

  • Is the lead singer a nun? The nuns in my high school sang like this.

  • all the best

  • If you believe there are words to describe pure beauty, they apply here.

Others like Joan Baez can do as well.

    No one can do better.

  • Wow!!! que linda voz tiene esta cantante!!!! 5*****

  • Great cover, Judith lifts this track to another level. Bring back The Seekers!

  • yeah.

  • awesome song!

  • Judith's beautiful soprano voice is amazing here - listen to her voice!

  • I agree with the other posters that this version is tops, and Judith's high vocals just take it up and out of this world into another realm.

  • Haunting is the word

  • So many people covered this song & did a good job. My 2 personal favorite versions were Mary Travers & Hoyt Axton.

  • Judith Durham such an amazing singer - still great in 2009 - by far the best version of this song!

  • Judith is an amazing singer!!!!!!!!!!

  • @cereeal1 The seekers are just as good today as the first time I heard then in the mid 1960's Thank God they are still working together on special occasions. I would like to know how their concert tour was in October with Andre Rieu???

  • brilliant song

  • Does anyone else see the massive resemblance between this song and bobby bares 500 miles... almost the same tune just a mild variation of the words... now which is better is the question... but id probably say this one is!

  • I'm guessing Bobby Bare was influenced by the Seekers version of "500 Miles".

I seriously doubt there is a singer or group capable of topping the Seekers' version of this.

  • it was likely the other way around. Bobby Bare released his version in 63, the Seekers, my favorite mixed group of all time came out with this version of 500 miles in 64. Bobby is credited with rewriting the words of a very old mountain song......900 miles......others say it was Hedy West.....

And Peter Paul and Mary likely had the biggest hit..... The seekers really likeed PP&M so maybe.......

  • @LittleJimmySouthern Jimmy's right. The whole point about folk songs is they weren't sung by horses, and the lyrics continue to change. Bobby Bare's version is so different, but just as good.

  • Great point about "Folk Music" - Music of the "Folk" as apposed to music of Jack or Jill. Folk music has the connotation of belonging to the people because it is from the people. There was a special time when the generation of that time embraced the values of folk music as apposed to commercial music. It is sad to me that such values were shouted out in short order. Shouted out, but never lost.

  • @LittleJimmySouthern

Yes, and Woody Guthrie did another version and his was called 100 miles in quick time.

  • @RainbowSix1984 each is excellent in its own right, i like Bobby's background music better

  • Incredible, Hauntingly beautiful.

  • lol i bought this album for like 25 p

  • Gold Bless Judith Durham!

  • Awesome, a muscial masterpiece!!!
