well, I don't know why Eddie's tone is called "Brown" (maybe really from shitting your pants once you hear it ;p) but - scientificly speaking - "The Brown Sound", is the sound which pushed, low frequencies theoretically make you shit your pants
Eddie on the "Brown Sound": - not sure how accurate this is.
Eddie Van Halen refers to his guitar tone as the "brown sound." He says it's not yellow, pink, or blue. It's brown. All dirt and molasses. It's not just a tone, but also the incredible mastery of the guitar that Ed displays on each Van Halen track. Actually, the term "brown sound" was originally coined by the Van Halen brothers to describe the sound of Alex's snare. Ed has even said "I want my guitar to sound like Al's snare drum."
Chappers, any chance of an awesome Fuzz pedal shootout? I'm probably a little on my own on the fuzz pedal love, but it would be awesome if you could :)
Wampler always delivers. They do a Brad Paisley overdrive too. And his tone is just amazing. Brent is great too. His album "Hot Wired" is hard to get. He did a Jazz album with his brother on the drums. It's ok. "Smoking Section"
Brian Wampler literally "wrote the book" (see Amazon.com) on guitar effects. Thank God he started his own company. Best part is, they are high-quality, at a respectable price and there is no 3 year waiting list like for the stupid Ethos. By the time my name comes up on the list I'm not gonna want it anymore. Wampler maintains a consistent production level to meet the demand. The Leviathan and Ego-Compressor are great pedals too.
Thanks a lot for the video. I'm getting a Pinnacle deluxe as soon as I possibly can. That thing sounds like sex in a box. Keepin' it metal as fuck \m/
Well, i think Stick is doing pretty well, cause i always found this "sound engineering magic" so interesting... i might even go do a sound engineering school...
Lol :" a Mesa Bogie Express with a flat EQ" >>> this is impossible! You either get bass frequencies or low-mids with this amp, it colours everything and beyond to its sauce... not the best testing amp guys :-)
I think no guitar amp is truly flat. They should run trough a hifi amp if they wanted flat. But you do have a point about the express. It has a lot of low mid frequencies plus small cabs in general are mid heavier.
did you get your socks from a supermarket chain with the letters a, d, s, and a in the title rob??? i only ask because i am wearing the exact same style at present :o
I use a Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue and I can attest that the Wampler Black '65 really nails that tone quite well. Even the rather nasty overdrive from the 6V6's is replicated in this pedal. The Mesa Express is a very different sounding amp than the DRRI, but the Black '65 really makes it (almost) indistinguishable. Nice job Wampler!
Cool. Interesting you've hooked up yer Wamplers to a Boogie Express. I've just bought a Black '65, and I fire it through the same amp I've had for couple of years.
GCC!
(Great Gear Combo).
Oh, and I can verify, that these pedals ARE really quiet
@FergusVickersGuitar I`ve got a lotta Wamplers, for boostage look no further than the boost from the Slostortion boost circuit. Although my main dirty boost at the moment is a Wampler Paisley with the gain quite low and the tone and presence high. Works great.
@FergusVickersGuitar I wouldnt call it a tube screamer , it is an overdrive but offers a lot more. If you keep the gain down to 25/30 % and match the volume with amp's volume and adjust the tone to taste you have a lift in volume and thickens tone and gain without oversaturing the tone . You can also adjust the gain structure using a switch from normal to dumble. Dont use the bass boosts its just way to much unless your running a tranny amp thats thin
Thanks for the demo, I never heard of the brand before, and now I actually want to pick up all of those.. One can never have to many overdrive pedals!
@RobChappers Hey man you going to be doing any more of those "sound like this artist for under a grand" videos. I really did enjoy them and i think a few people would want them back too ... do pantera first though :D :D :D
@rickyjshiznit yeah it's not quite as simple as that, but i know what you mean, really i am more interested if it can be done to a good likeness with modern equipment.
@kingdarko Pantera is a MODERN band with MODERN equipment.........Do a likeness with Modern equipment.....I just vomited in my mouth........Really, you ever heard of google? They have uhhh about 1000 links to pages by Guitar World on nothing but Dimes amps, He used a Warhead and he used to be signed to Krank either would do decent......I saw a Dime Warhead in the corner at my local used amp shop and it never sold.
@willeng84 Shows you how much you know, first off just so you know dime used that warhead for cleans only, dime also never used krank even though that's damage plan so that's a moot point. I asked for pantera which he used amps from the early 80's and 90's almost 20-30 years ago.
I'm also in the UK his amps are kinda rare over here. Anyway the point of me asking is to get chappers to do that "sound like" again cos that made good video in my opinion. He could demo new gear at the same time too
@Augenatic I am not a huge pantera fan, I was merely making the point that his gear is modern and VERY easy to acquire, we're not talking about finding a Dumble overdrive special for gods sake and yes your right, I heard him say he used solid states because he couldn't get enough gain from tubes and they were too warm, he liked alot of bass and treble and as everyone knows dumps the mids.
Eddie Van Halen initially used the term "Brown" sound to describe his brother Alex's drum tone...pleasingly "Woodlike." He then used the term for his amplified tone because he succeeded in getting a big, warm, not overly distorted/harsh sound. As he would say, a pleasing tone that did not sound like razor blades coming at you. Brown is organic, not cold and metallic sounding.
I read on wikileaks that EVH stole the brown sound from Operah Winfrey, who was the real inventor of fingering tappery. it was initially called the brown lady sound, but this was later changed due to it sounding very racist. it was a different time back then. true story.
Just something for later on, I tihnk it would've been nice to hear the Triple Wreck on something that wasn't made by Mesa Boogie, just because it's sort of a tip of the hat to Mesa styled amps (one model specifically of course) it could be said that it sounds "better" through a Mesa amp. I dunno though, you're the expert Chappers so I could be wrong, it's just something I thought of. Either way I've heard this pedal sound great on many amps!
Hey! I do remember, you mentioned some wempler pedals compared to my real tube od... Is it pinnacl? I think triple wreck is a bit closer with its tone, but from "another side". It is more high gain'ish.
Eddie Van Halen once said that he considered his guitar tone "brown like somebody hitting you with a nice, mature redwood tree as oppossed to someone throwing thin razor blades at you". Im guessin' he meant expansive and warm versus compressed and thin sounding. Anyway, AWESOME demo of the best overdrives around. Rock on Chappers!
@quinnsley123 They are, but they are hand built in the US using only the best components we can find. Our products are built like tanks, not to a budget... We feel that the extra is worth it if you want great tone and great durability. Each one is guaranteed for 5 years as well :)
I think brown stone actually originated from Alex Van Halen's drum sound, and us guitarists stole the term and gave all credit to his brother. But don't quote me on that! \m/
Wampler makes great pedals. What's your take on their Plexi pedals? How do the foam Acoustic panels compare to the ones made of fiberglass or other insulation and covered in fabric? It is called the Brown sound because a guy named Brown ( No Lie) either did the Mods to EVH amps. The Tone King had an article on his website talking about this. The guy even came out with a few pedals also.
@RobChappers My initial fuzzy feelings of well being evaporated when you reminded me that I am yet to buy Skyrim! :'( But still, for replying to me, you have now made my life 10x more awesome.
Also love "Typical Girl". Great song. These demos are all great. Best demos on the internet. All the different gear, all the funny stuff, the great playing, great combination of sounds with each piece of gear. And the audio/video-quality is fantastic also.
