Can someone help me. Im trying to build one as a physics project and was wondering, could i hook up this modded one EXACTLY like the one you made in the video, instead of a ball valve, and if i do, would i need a battery or anything? Thanks
i'd appreciate some expertise with a problem i had. i build my first barrel sealing piston valve cannon recently, and took my old sprinkler off a different gun to use as the trigger. the sprinkler valve couldn't hold the pressure from the new gun, like couldn't hold ANY pressure, and i had used my old gun at ~80 psi regularly with no problems. i went out and bought a new sprinkler valve, and it did the same thing. i can break the seal on them just by blowing hard into them now. any advice?
First of thank you so much for this vid, helped me loads :D I have a question regarding this solenoid valve i bought. The bleed valve has a thin metal shaft that goes through the centre of the diaphram. When I remove it there is a small hole left behind on the diapram. Should I block it? again thanks for this video
@Localgathering I've never done one with a rod. I'd check the SpudFiles Pneumatic Cannon Discussion forum. If you search it for your model number I'd bet you get a hit. (Use the "Advanced Search") What's the Make and Model?
yes, I did everything proper, except my valve is a rain bird model # cpf 100 not a cp100. if you google it you can see the valve, Im horrible on computers, otherwise I would have posted the link for you. If you get a min. , could you take a look at it and reply? your help would be appreciated!! thank you!!!
@mattyzip77 It's a sturdy lookin thing anyway. Basically all you need to do is seal all holes "above" the diaphragm (on the top cover) except for your trigger valve (all we're really doing is sealing the solenoid hole and replacing it with a much bigger one for our trigger). If there's nothing on SpudFiles about this model you might post a question to see if anyone has done one yet. (And make us a video of your build!)
On my rain bird the bleed valve is not in the middle it is more towards the right of the valve should I just fill the hole for the bleed valve with appoxxy,Would it work the same?
@MrXxandrew I actually saw that new version of the valve a few weeks ago in the Lowes out here.
The principle should be exactly the same. If you drill and tap in the center you can just plug the bleed. But you could, I think, even drill and tap the bleed if the plastic is better reinforced there (the trigger would be off center, might work with a nipple and a short hose to the trigger, depending on your needs). Long as there is no leak into the valve except through your trigger it should work.
@VerbotenDingleberry Ok I got it I just drilled and tapped in the middle and I just took the bleed screw and Screwed it all the way in and it works perfectley If you have the bleed screw half screwed in It leaks you have to have it all the way in.:D Very nice video It works amazingly good!
I did exactly as you did but I have a Toro Lawn Genie 54004 and when I screw pull the trigger for the blow gun it just lets air out the end of the gun. Also I removed the guiding rod and I am wondering if I need to stuff up the hole in the middle of the diaphragm because if I still had the guiding rod, it wouldve stuffed up the hole. so PLEASE HELP ME!!

It's called a "tap". Try searching "Tap and Die" at Amazon, I got a ton of hits. Be aware, some taps take strange drill bit sizes for the correct size holes, be sure you have the correct size. You can google that too!
I'd check out SpudFiles first, they have a TON of info on cannon designs and full auto (Vortex Block) bb guns (and a everything else related to these things)

Thanks for this walk-through. I first saw this video a couple of years ago and since then I've made all kinds of potato guns for friends and family.. if I am to attach the valve from the barrel to a tank, what do I do to fire the gun? Do I pull that think that you installed on top of the valve in the video? Thanks a bunch for the vid too :).
@som1112 That could depend on where you shop. Don't get caught up in "part's lists". It's all about designing and building. With this valve all you have to remember is that you need a "tank" to hold air in, and valve to put air in the tank (Schrader or Quick Connect usually) and a pressure guage so you can tell how much pressure you have in the tank. Put the tank on the "back" of the valve and a barrel on the front. Done.
Remember: ALL Pressure Rated PVC Pipe and Fittings. Safety First.
Absolutely. In fact, if the cannon will always have a barrel smaller that 1" then I'd use a 3/4" valve instead. Smaler valves tend to operate slightly faster (less mass in the diaphragm/piston to accelerate). But if you plan on shooting golf balls or something then I'd stick with the 1" version...
@Ghostxx10 I'd say that depended on the design and the engeneering on the QEV. For instance, my barrel sealer valve would be far more efficient if I could make a lighter piston...
The tap makes it *much* easier to get the pipe nipple in the valve without cracking the part. For about $10.00 you can keep from ruining a $15 or $20 valve. It makes a lot of sense in you plan top do more than one or two. If you do one without the tap be *very* careful and slow and you might get away with it.
I'm gonna make a pneumatic cannon soon and I'm just wondering if using a PVC ball valve in between the air chamber and trigger would act as a safety switch ?
any thoughts or tips and preferably and idea for how this may workout ?
I'm pretty sure that would not be a good plan. You want pressure on the valve to build slowly. Opening a ball valve behind the sprinkler valve would drop all the pressure on it at once.
What I've seen done for a trigger safety is a small brass ball valve between the Blowgun and the Sprinkler Valve. Not sure how much safer it is but that's all I can think of.
In handling a weapon the primary safety is always between your ears...
Google "Diaphragm Valve" and you'll get a ton of info. Much more than I could put in this reply. Also, in the Video Info above, click the SpudTech link...
How dose the blow gun open the valve and would it not be easier to use the solenoid with some batteries and a switch , so wen u press the switch it opens the valve.
The blowgun does exactly what the solenoid does but *way* faster. The faster you dump the air behind the diaphragm the faster the valve will open and that's what gives you power. Plus it eliminates the need for any power source. Nothing worse than a gun that won't fire because the battery is dead...
The solenoid is (slightly) easier but less powerful. See SpudFiles for some actual numbers on how much more (I seem to remember it being about 10% more energy on average).
Yup, golf balls rule. The barrel for them is something called SDR-21 1.5"; fit's them perfectly (Well and Pool plumbing supply should have it). The sprinkler valve was about $20.00 and the rest of the brass and the Blowgun were another $15.00 or so...
@jcjacob42 Rate is close; 1 USD = 1.02856 AUD, so yeah, 35 + PVC, maybe 50 total if PVC is about the same price there. (Note! Always, repeat, *always* use Pressure Rated PVC for every single part of a Pneumatic gun! If one of these fails it can seriously mess you up, don't skimp on the PVC; it's cheaper than plastic surgery.) Also, check out the SpudFiles site. Tons of info there on getting power and being safe.
@VerbotenDingleberry I will do my best to get one up as soon as possible. P.S. use some rags as wadding and have fun with raw eggs, they will survive the launch.
@suckerfreelatino1 It's called a blowgun attachment for a high pressure air hose. Almost any autoshop will have one with attachments for cleaning parts, filling tires, etc. Most hardware stores should carry them. I think I paid 5 or 6 bucks for the ones I used...
@VerbotenDingleberry Are you removing the solenoid valve because you WANT to fire the cannon mechanically or because you DON'T WANT to fire it electrically? Is the performance better with the blowgun attachment? I've built a rocket launcher which is really just a vertical potato gun and when I fire it using the solenoid there seems to be some air left in the system after the launch (not much).
@digidrink The trick to power is to open the valve as fast as possible. To do that you have to dump the air behind the diaphragm as fast as possible. The solenoid has tiny holes and opens fairly slowly. The blowgun has a much larger hole and can be operated pretty quickly. The difference in performance is noticeable from my experience and most of what I've read indicates the same. There are even mods to make the blowgun perform better. See SpudFiles.
Almost any Sprinkler valve can be modded. This video is just specifict to the CP-100. A great place to find specific instructions on other makes and models is the SpudFiles website. Use their Search feature and you should find some help. It's usually just a matter of where/how to drill the hole for the blowgun.
Worst case, if you have to figure it out yourself then *you* should make *us* a video!
@chilidress I heard about the mess in Greece but $100.00 US for a Sprinkler Valve is just crazy. I hope it gets better for you guys.
Any chance of finding one on the internet and having it shipped in cheaper than that?
Worst case, if you can get regular PVC you could make a Barrel Sealer (See my other vids). A 1" barrel sealing valve would be more powerful than a 1" diaphragm valve anyway...
Hey, I have a different sprinkler valve and the little bleed valve isn't in the center. Could i drill it out and put the blowgun off center, or does it have to be dead center. Thanks!
@puckhound95 I'm betting it's an Orbit valve, right?
I'll bet it can be done safely but to be sure you should search SpudFiles for the model number of the valve. I'll bet someone has made a post on the details for that specific valve. It may even be one with a guide rod and those can be more difficult to make work. If you can't find that model or one just like it then *you* should mod it and make a post on that model for the rest of us!
@VerbotenDingleberry Okay I just took a look at the valve, it's a Rainbird. I'm not sure which is the model number cause i don't have the box anymore, but I think it is19AU08A. I am pretty sure that this is it: (ill PM you the link cause it wont let me type a URL in a comment)
Inside of the valve, it looks like yours with the spring and the diaphragm. The only difference is the bleed valve is in a different location. .
The whole trick to power with any pneumatic gun is how fast you can open the valve. The reason gunpowder is such a great propellant is that it expands *very* fast. Ball valves are very slow to open. Sprinkler valves (Diaphragm valves) are pretty fast but don't open as fast (or wide) as piston valves (see my vids on Barrel Sealing Piston Valves). But, piston valves are a pain to build and you can get a Sprinkler Valve right off the shelf. It's a good place to start.
@xDreamTheImpossible Lol, glad you liked the vid. Really though, I got all this from the internet (mostly from the SpudFiles site). Once I got it figured out for myself the video was simple.
@oldman32123 In the US you can usually find one in a Home Depot or Lowes or some other large hardware/building supply place. It's a Gardening item so some gardening places would carry it too. I'd bet you can get one from a website with a little searching if all else fails...
@spottydodz Not stupid, it took me a while to figure phneumatic ideas at first. It gets easier. Google "Diaphragm Valve", you'll get a ton of stuff. Also check out the SpudFiles site, join up for free and look at the Forums. Search for "Piston Valves Explained Visually", the Coaxial valve is similar to a diaphragm valve. It takes some effort but once it clicks you'll understand most of the designs quickly. I just this week saw a Piston Valved Hybrid design that took me while to "get"...
@ogbreeb Never had that problem. First I'd try taking it apart and washing the parts to be sure absolutely no debris is in the valve. Then you could try removing the little filter (on the diaphragm itself). Never had to but have seen it done.
Also, on firing, hold the trigger wide open, don't just tap it. That'll make 'em honk too (pilot closes too soon).
If this doesn't fix it you can try searching the Forum posts on SpudFiles.
It's a simple diaphragm valve. I could spend a thousand words on this but many others have already done so. If you're really interested just google "Diaphragm Valve" and give the SpudFiles website a visit (the Forums there are great!) All we've done is take a stock valve and replace the electronic trigger with a mechanical (Blowgun) trigger.
caould anybody please explain how to use this valve with some hose in between the valve and the blowgun valve? i have seen other tutorials with other valves, but i want to use this one. The cannon i am trying to build requires some hose, but im not sure how to tap the hose barbs. Any help is greatly appreciated.
@ipodtouchguy77 Just replace the 1/4" adapter with a hose barb, add another hose barb on the blowgun, get some *pressure rated* hose (150 psi or better) and a couple hose clamps and you're in business...
@ipodtouchguy77 Pipe threads are tapered so they tighten as they screw in; they stop pretty much where they stop. The amount of teflon tape you use can make some difference though.
@xj650rj You can use the Solenoid but the vent hole is very small and thus the valve actuates more slowly than if you use a Blowgun. The blowgun is mostly for efficiency and the fact that it eliminates the need for power is just a bonus...
@fano021191 Yes, you can. Then, if you like, you can even compare triggering with the Solenoid vs triggering with the blowgun (should be faster). I just remove them to get them out of the way of the blowgun.
@VerbotenDingleberry My valve has that little black screw(bleed screw i think) not in the CENTER of the valve :S would this make a problem ??? How should i mod it instead my valve
@fano021191 It's very likely that the procedure would be the same. It depends on the exact model (some have a guide rod that makes it even more tricky) . I'd suggest checking the SpudFiles site for specifics on your model. What model are you using anyway? If Google and SpudFiles fail you just let me know and I'll see what I can find...
@fano021191 just plug that hole with epoxy putty, and drill into the middle like you would on this valve. Thats what you gotta do on the new Rain Bird CP-100s btw
I built this and my valve is letting the air by so I took it apart looked for debries, found none put it back together and it still is letting air by do you have any ideas?
this was very helpful, thanks i used this vid to help me modify my first valve. but once u learn how a sprinkler valve works its really quite obvious lol. im thinking of making a 2 " piston valve but i dont want to spend too much more money on my cannon.
In all pneumatic applications the faster you open the valve the more power will be transferred to the projectile in its short trip down the barrel. Ball valves are cheap and safe but have much less power. Diaphragm valves are faster and Piston valves faster still.
This valve was actually used as the *trigger* for my 2" piston valve just to increase that valve's performance.
It all about speed. Just for grins, Google "Mauler Valve" and check out the SpudFiles site...
I never really thought about it but, yeah, I can't imagine why not. One shouldn't interfear with the other. Heck, then you could really compare the two methods, literally side by side...
Well, It's really pretty simple (as you can see in the video) as long as you can get hold of pretty much any sprinkler valve. I'm not sure of the legal implications of sending one to a foreign country either. Plus, I bet shipping would probably run more than any tools you might need. So, it's probably a bad idea.
Exactly. There are even methods to increase the airflow through the blowgun by filing away metal from the internal parts (see SpudFiles). The faster you dump the air from behind the diaphragm (or piston) the faster it opens. Solonoids use tiny holes (which is fine for their intended use in the garden but sucks for cannons).
They will open faster and that's the whole secret to power.
That said it's going to be tough to find one over 1" for a decent price so, if you're building a big cannon, a 2" ball valve might be better simply because it'll open wider (but slower).
A piston valve is even faster. It looks hard to make one but it's not bad; I have some vids on how to make one (Barrel Sealing Piston Valve). At the end of Part 2 I show a cheap, simple design for a small piston valve so that's an option too.
yea but like u mostly see ppl using 3/4 or 1/2 in qev ive rad on there will be about the same. but if u put 1in qev and 1 in sprinkler the qev will do much better
i figured it out, the blowgun was crap cuz i found it in my garage so yes it was coming out of the blowgun... when i put my thumb on the blowgun it doesnt leak out of the sprinkler valve . . . so is there anything wrong with the sprinkler valve?
This is a great video. I modified one of these valves to use with my tennis ball cannon. Works great. I'm getting it up to 150 PSI with no problems. If it's leaking, you need to take it apart and clean it. Sometimes plastic from drilled holes gets caught between the seals. Ever since I went from an electric to pneumatic, I've notices improved performance and my valve no longer "honks".
First guess is that you have the barrel on the wrong end of the valve (flow direction arrows should be on the valve. The barrel should be on the "exit" end).
What is your compressed air source? Compressor? Pump?
It could be that the valve needs more pressure/flow to seal. Try filling it with a air compressor; take it down to the gas station and use theirs just for a test.
Did it have a spring inside? Is it still there? (That is what should close the valve when there is no pressure.)
Try the compressor. If it still leaks then I'd check on SpudFiles. They have some troubleshooting guides for this. If it's clean inside and there's enough air flow it *should* seal right up.
Hey, any air leaking out of the blowgun while you fill? That would be a problem as well....
With a 1" male threaded adapter. You should be able to find one at the same place you got the 1" pipe. The nice thing about the threaded valves is that it makes it possible to change out the valve, barrel, whatever...
hey wen i unscrewed the screws, one of them got round and forced me to cut the screw in half to open it. Will this affect it becuse wen i drilled the screw in half, the plastic around the screw hole it melted. also is it possible to use wood putty becuase i cant find epoxy putty at my hardware store
I'd be very careful using any damaged parts on any cannon. If the screw was replaced and the damage was very minor it might be safe (or not), Wood putty is not going to work. I'm very surprised your hardware place has no kind of epoxy (liquid works better than putty in this case). Some stuff called JB Weld would also be a good substitute (and automotive place might even carry that.)
Ok, I've modifyed 2 sprinkler valves and both leak out of the same area. Where the air is supposed to come out. But it leaks before i even press the trigger. How can i fix this?
What brand is it? Could you have put it back together with the Flow direction (the arrows) backwards? Are you forcing air in the wrong end of the valve (again, flow arrows)? Is it possible the brass fitting is in the cap too far and is messing with the spring?
(Dumb questions, I know, just checking.)
I have done 2 of these and both worked properly. Message me with the details...
If you mean the 1/8" to 1/4" brass "converter" it doesn't go in the plastic; it goes on the 1/8' nipple that goes in the plastic. Look close at 3:53. I've already screwd them together.
We can only get a 1/8" nipple in the plastic cap because a bigger hole would make the cap very weak. So, we put a 1/8" nipple into the cap and size it up to 1/4" with the converter to fit the Blowgun.
I epoxy all Brass to plastic connections and use Gas Tape for all the Brass to Brass connections.
can someone explain to me on how exactly just adding the blow gun lets the air to the barrel.... need answer ASAP

Check:
- Is the "tank" on the proper end of the valve (on the Input side)
- If using a bike pump, try compressed air (pumps are too slow)
- Is the inside of the valve *absolutely* clean?
If all else fails check out SpudFiles (they have a ton of info on troubleshooting these things)

Absolutely. In fact, if the cannon will always have a barrel smaller that 1" then I'd use a 3/4" valve instead. Smaler valves tend to operate slightly faster (less mass in the diaphragm/piston to accelerate). But if you plan on shooting golf balls or something then I'd stick with the 1" version...

which is stronger? a modified sprinkler valve or homemade qev valve?
same principle but which is better?
Ghostxx10 1 year ago
@Ghostxx10 I'd say that depended on the design and the engeneering on the QEV. For instance, my barrel sealer valve would be far more efficient if I could make a lighter piston...
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
@VerbotenDingleberry
ah alright, do you know if there are any other designs that can provide semi automatic shooting that may be as effective as qev valves?

Do you need the 1/8 inch tap ?
Cwatts2009 1 year ago
@Cwatts2009
The tap makes it *much* easier to get the pipe nipple in the valve without cracking the part. For about $10.00 you can keep from ruining a $15 or $20 valve. It makes a lot of sense in you plan top do more than one or two. If you do one without the tap be *very* careful and slow and you might get away with it.

funny, i had the exact same idea. Thanks for ur help anyways. And also for the quick replys.
Cwatts2009 1 year ago
I'm gonna make a pneumatic cannon soon and I'm just wondering if using a PVC ball valve in between the air chamber and trigger would act as a safety switch ?
any thoughts or tips and preferably and idea for how this may workout ?
Thanks
Cwatts2009 1 year ago
@Cwatts2009
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
how dose it work

Google "Diaphragm Valve" and you'll get a ton of info. Much more than I could put in this reply. Also, in the Video Info above, click the SpudTech link...

Cwatts2009 1 year ago
@VerbotenDingleberry
How dose the blow gun open the valve and would it not be easier to use the solenoid with some batteries and a switch , so wen u press the switch it opens the valve.
Cwatts2009 1 year ago
@Cwatts2009
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
was that a golf ball u shot!!!! nice work with the vidio how much did u pay for that sprinkler valve?
jcjacob42 1 year ago
@jcjacob42
Yup, golf balls rule. The barrel for them is something called SDR-21 1.5"; fit's them perfectly (Well and Pool plumbing supply should have it). The sprinkler valve was about $20.00 and the rest of the brass and the Blowgun were another $15.00 or so...
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
@VerbotenDingleberry thanks so only 35-40$ oh wait Australian?
jcjacob42 1 year ago
@jcjacob42 Rate is close; 1 USD = 1.02856 AUD, so yeah, 35 + PVC, maybe 50 total if PVC is about the same price there. (Note! Always, repeat, *always* use Pressure Rated PVC for every single part of a Pneumatic gun! If one of these fails it can seriously mess you up, don't skimp on the PVC; it's cheaper than plastic surgery.) Also, check out the SpudFiles site. Tons of info there on getting power and being safe.

suckerfreelatino1 1 year ago
@suckerfreelatino1 It's called a blowgun attachment for a high pressure air hose. Almost any autoshop will have one with attachments for cleaning parts, filling tires, etc. Most hardware stores should carry them. I think I paid 5 or 6 bucks for the ones I used...
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
@VerbotenDingleberry thanks.
suckerfreelatino1 1 year ago
@VerbotenDingleberry Are you removing the solenoid valve because you WANT to fire the cannon mechanically or because you DON'T WANT to fire it electrically? Is the performance better with the blowgun attachment? I've built a rocket launcher which is really just a vertical potato gun and when I fire it using the solenoid there seems to be some air left in the system after the launch (not much).
digidrink 1 year ago
@digidrink The trick to power is to open the valve as fast as possible. To do that you have to dump the air behind the diaphragm as fast as possible. The solenoid has tiny holes and opens fairly slowly. The blowgun has a much larger hole and can be operated pretty quickly. The difference in performance is noticeable from my experience and most of what I've read indicates the same. There are even mods to make the blowgun perform better. See SpudFiles.

do u need CP-100 Sprinkler Valve? or u can use any type of sprinker valve?
khmerst4444 1 year ago
@khmerst4444
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
@VerbotenDingleberry Oh okay just askin , Thanks =)

@chilidress I heard about the mess in Greece but $100.00 US for a Sprinkler Valve is just crazy. I hope it gets better for you guys.
Any chance of finding one on the internet and having it shipped in cheaper than that?
Worst case, if you can get regular PVC you could make a Barrel Sealer (See my other vids). A 1" barrel sealing valve would be more powerful than a 1" diaphragm valve anyway...
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
Hey, I have a different sprinkler valve and the little bleed valve isn't in the center. Could i drill it out and put the blowgun off center, or does it have to be dead center. Thanks!
puckhound95 1 year ago
@puckhound95 I'm betting it's an Orbit valve, right?
I'll bet it can be done safely but to be sure you should search SpudFiles for the model number of the valve. I'll bet someone has made a post on the details for that specific valve. It may even be one with a guide rod and those can be more difficult to make work. If you can't find that model or one just like it then *you* should mod it and make a post on that model for the rest of us!
If you get stuck send me the model number.
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
@VerbotenDingleberry kk Thanks man, i'll look up the model number and other stuff. If I need anything, i'll contact you.
puckhound95 1 year ago
@VerbotenDingleberry Okay I just took a look at the valve, it's a Rainbird. I'm not sure which is the model number cause i don't have the box anymore, but I think it is19AU08A. I am pretty sure that this is it: (ill PM you the link cause it wont let me type a URL in a comment)
Inside of the valve, it looks like yours with the spring and the diaphragm. The only difference is the bleed valve is in a different location. .

what is the benefit of using a sprinkler valve
worldburrito45 1 year ago
@worldburrito45
Power.
It's a good place to start.

oldman32123 1 year ago
@oldman32123 In the US you can usually find one in a Home Depot or Lowes or some other large hardware/building supply place. It's a Gardening item so some gardening places would carry it too. I'd bet you can get one from a website with a little searching if all else fails...

spottydodz 1 year ago
@spottydodz Not stupid, it took me a while to figure phneumatic ideas at first. It gets easier. Google "Diaphragm Valve", you'll get a ton of stuff. Also check out the SpudFiles site, join up for free and look at the Forums. Search for "Piston Valves Explained Visually", the Coaxial valve is similar to a diaphragm valve. It takes some effort but once it clicks you'll understand most of the designs quickly. I just this week saw a Piston Valved Hybrid design that took me while to "get"...
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
i used this valve and when i fire my gun is making a honking noise and annoying me. how can i fix this?
ogbreeb 1 year ago
@ogbreeb Never had that problem. First I'd try taking it apart and washing the parts to be sure absolutely no debris is in the valve. Then you could try removing the little filter (on the diaphragm itself). Never had to but have seen it done.
Also, on firing, hold the trigger wide open, don't just tap it. That'll make 'em honk too (pilot closes too soon).
If this doesn't fix it you can try searching the Forum posts on SpudFiles.

@VerbotenDingleberry may you please explain how this works i did not understand that diagram.
kjcchickennugget 1 year ago
@kjcchickennugget
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
caould anybody please explain how to use this valve with some hose in between the valve and the blowgun valve? i have seen other tutorials with other valves, but i want to use this one. The cannon i am trying to build requires some hose, but im not sure how to tap the hose barbs. Any help is greatly appreciated.
ipodtouchguy77 1 year ago
@ipodtouchguy77 Just replace the 1/4" adapter with a hose barb, add another hose barb on the blowgun, get some *pressure rated* hose (150 psi or better) and a couple hose clamps and you're in business...
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
when i screw the 1/4" adapter onto the 1/8" nipple, will it stop at half way or do i just have to guess whe to stop screwing it down?
ipodtouchguy77 1 year ago
@ipodtouchguy77 Pipe threads are tapered so they tighten as they screw in; they stop pretty much where they stop. The amount of teflon tape you use can make some difference though.
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
@xj650rj You can use the Solenoid but the vent hole is very small and thus the valve actuates more slowly than if you use a Blowgun. The blowgun is mostly for efficiency and the fact that it eliminates the need for power is just a bonus...

Can i leave the solenoid on, to ¨seal¨ the holes?
fano021191 1 year ago
@fano021191 Yes, you can. Then, if you like, you can even compare triggering with the Solenoid vs triggering with the blowgun (should be faster). I just remove them to get them out of the way of the blowgun.
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
@VerbotenDingleberry My valve has that little black screw(bleed screw i think) not in the CENTER of the valve :S would this make a problem ??? How should i mod it instead my valve
fano021191 1 year ago
@fano021191 It's very likely that the procedure would be the same. It depends on the exact model (some have a guide rod that makes it even more tricky) . I'd suggest checking the SpudFiles site for specifics on your model. What model are you using anyway? If Google and SpudFiles fail you just let me know and I'll see what I can find...
VerbotenDingleberry 1 year ago
@fano021191 just plug that hole with epoxy putty, and drill into the middle like you would on this valve. Thats what you gotta do on the new Rain Bird CP-100s btw

ipodtouchguy77 1 year ago
I built this and my valve is letting the air by so I took it apart looked for debries, found none put it back together and it still is letting air by do you have any ideas?
mrcourtneycox 1 year ago
@mrcourtneycox
A few common issues:
If you're filling it with a tire pump it may not have enough air flow to seal the valve. Try a compressor.
Double check the flow direction (arrows?); the airtank must be on the "in" or "back" side and the barrel on the "out" or "front" side.
Does the trigger (blowgun) seal by itself?
If none of these is the issue then message me (also, the SpudFiles site may have some more things to try. Search the forums...)

why not just use a metal ball valve? whats the real advantage to this?
stoichiometric 2 years ago
In a word; Power.

MindWarp95 2 years ago
Well, It's really pretty simple (as you can see in the video) as long as you can get hold of pretty much any sprinkler valve. I'm not sure of the legal implications of sending one to a foreign country either. Plus, I bet shipping would probably run more than any tools you might need. So, it's probably a bad idea.

so the blowgun is used instead of the solenoid, to open the valve... much like a pistonvalve's bleed valve/trigger.....
metalinvalidmatt 2 years ago
VerbotenDingleberry 2 years ago
Is it nesesary to taper it?
MrIhavnovideos 2 years ago
Is this better than a normal ball valve?
wyz2285 2 years ago
They will open faster and that's the whole secret to power.
That said it's going to be tough to find one over 1" for a decent price so, if you're building a big cannon, a 2" ball valve might be better simply because it'll open wider (but slower).
A piston valve is even faster. It looks hard to make one but it's not bad; I have some vids on how to make one (Barrel Sealing Piston Valve). At the end of Part 2 I show a cheap, simple design for a small piston valve so that's an option too.
VerbotenDingleberry 2 years ago
does it open faster than a QEV?

SpudFiles rules.

This is a great video. I modified one of these valves to use with my tennis ball cannon. Works great. I'm getting it up to 150 PSI with no problems. If it's leaking, you need to take it apart and clean it. Sometimes plastic from drilled holes gets caught between the seals. Ever since I went from an electric to pneumatic, I've notices improved performance and my valve no longer "honks".
skvoucher 2 years ago
Glad it was helpful. The performance increase was the main reason I did the video. Getting rid of the honk is just gravy.
You ought to put up a video of your cannon for us! Try a tennis ball filled with water; much more punch...
VerbotenDingleberry 2 years ago
when i try to put air pressure in my chamber the air rushes right through the sprinkler valve and out the barrel
TheBasketBallDude30 2 years ago
First guess is that you have the barrel on the wrong end of the valve (flow direction arrows should be on the valve. The barrel should be on the "exit" end).
What is your compressed air source? Compressor? Pump?
VerbotenDingleberry 2 years ago
i just checked the valve is on right and i have a bike pump
TheBasketBallDude30 2 years ago
It could be that the valve needs more pressure/flow to seal. Try filling it with a air compressor; take it down to the gas station and use theirs just for a test.
Did it have a spring inside? Is it still there? (That is what should close the valve when there is no pressure.)
VerbotenDingleberry 2 years ago
i have an air compresser and the spring is still there yes
TheBasketBallDude30 2 years ago
Try the compressor. If it still leaks then I'd check on SpudFiles. They have some troubleshooting guides for this. If it's clean inside and there's enough air flow it *should* seal right up.
Hey, any air leaking out of the blowgun while you fill? That would be a problem as well....

no its not coming out of the blowgun

hey wen i unscrewed the screws, one of them got round and forced me to cut the screw in half to open it. Will this affect it becuse wen i drilled the screw in half, the plastic around the screw hole it melted. also is it possible to use wood putty becuase i cant find epoxy putty at my hardware store
kthuyen 2 years ago
I'd be very careful using any damaged parts on any cannon. If the screw was replaced and the damage was very minor it might be safe (or not), Wood putty is not going to work. I'm very surprised your hardware place has no kind of epoxy (liquid works better than putty in this case). Some stuff called JB Weld would also be a good substitute (and automotive place might even carry that.)

TheBasketBallDude30 2 years ago
I epoxy all Brass to Plastic connections.
I use Gas Tape for all the Brass to Brass connections.
VerbotenDingleberry 2 years ago
how do u get the converter in the plastic??
TheBasketBallDude30 2 years ago
If you mean the 1/8" to 1/4" brass "converter" it doesn't go in the plastic; it goes on the 1/8' nipple that goes in the plastic. Look close at 3:53. I've already screwd them together.
We can only get a 1/8" nipple in the plastic cap because a bigger hole would make the cap very weak. So, we put a 1/8" nipple into the cap and size it up to 1/4" with the converter to fit the Blowgun.
I epoxy all Brass to plastic connections and use Gas Tape for all the Brass to Brass connections.
