in 20 years its gonna be one rusty hole in the ground, no offense. Unless you paint the whole thing with unobtainium its going to corrode. Still that is a badass shelter, just wish it would last longer...
Not sure why you put six inches of concrete over the entire area and then just burried it. Shipping containers are VERY sturdy. They are made to support many fully loaded containers sitting directly on top of it. Also I saw you put lots of gravel under the container but you did not install a weeping system to allow water to reach sump pump. If you live in an area where it freezes your concrete needs footings below freeze level or freezing and shifing ground will DESTROY it.
It does seem like if you're going to build structure and fill in concrete that you might as well go all the way and just have a cellar built.. would it really cost so much more?
Possible improvement for the next container - instead of putting in a sump pump that requires power, just put in a large french drain that carries the water away from the container. Just a thought for anyone considering this. I would also consider concrete walls to there are no cave-ins. Its a bit pricey but its cool.
@JasonHickey12 it really depends. Your probably going to be below your homes septic system. So what I would do is dig your hole a little longer than the container, and install a poor mans septic system with a 55 gal drum and a short drainfield. The big job would be ditching over to your home water supply. But if your going to use this in a disaster it would be nice to flush that toilet. BTW these containers are stackable, a hole and a ladder and you got a 2 story container!
@johannas58 Yeah. I live in Florida, and flooding during storms is a problem. You'd have to live in one of the higher places in Florida to be able to do something like this. But it's still cool.
By the looks of the surrounding landscape and the abundant limestone, I suspect this is somewhere in the Texas Hill Country. That hole was dug into almost solid rock. The metal will rust away before the walls will collapse.
I am wondering why you decided to go underground with it rather than building a big hill and putting it inside the hill? Seems that the problems with water and such could be eliminated plus you could put a wind turbine and solar panels on the top of it. Or is this to be hidden? The reason I say this is because it doesn't seem to work as a bomb shelter.. And depending on how big of a hill would be just fine for a tornado shelter. Cement walls around it would have been better. Like a basement.
@freespeachrulez : "am wondering why you decided to go underground with it rather than building a big hill and putting it inside the hill?" Funny you should mention this. I am in the process of using the soil and rocks that came from the hole and piling them around another container. It will all be above ground, insulate things, and give me something to do with all that left-over material. Smart call!
@wartree lolno. Being underground doesn't make something resistant. It only gives you a standoff distance to the explosion.
Not to mention that we have built bombs specifically made to penetrate bunkers. But never mind. An explosion in the surface would probably kill everyone inside with the shockwave.
i suspect helicopters with assin squads with airborn metal anomoly detectors have been built to find all the shipping containers.they will just drill them and insert cyanide gernade and their work is done. ten minutes tops
If you skipped the container and built the walls the same way you did the stairway walls you would have essentially built a basement. That would have given you walls with support and you could have back-filled the walls. The way you did it the dirt outside the container will cave in after a while and the metal walls will not hold that weight back.
a peripheral concrete drain around the fill and a polycarbonate canopy over the stairs. That might lead to less load on the sump pump when the rains come. ( and they WILL come.)
@Devilen73 Yeah, good point I lived in tornado country for forty years. All we had was the basement, which in fact saved the lives of some our good friends after their house was destroyed in the middle of the nite.
@jbg43 Good to hear that your basement saved some lives mate :-) I lived in Colorado for a couple of years, and there were some twisters when I was there, but none came too close, but I was still happy that we had a basement, just in case.
Thinking about building a castle out of these things. Spending around 300k on shipping containers. Welding sides off. an underground floor. 48 foot long containers.. Good stuff.
Wine cellar... Jeremiah the Bullfrog gonna want to pay you a visit. Now that you have posted this on youtube all the winos in town will be hitting you up for a place to stay when the next storm hits. It does look good though
@RuthlessZabusa Just wait until the heavy rain comes. There is no reinforcement on the walls or below and then there's flash rust and rot. You're gonna need a hell of a sump pump too. Water seepage happens faster that you think.
@RuthlessZabusa what about when it rains heavy and water stars seeping in and flash rust and rot starts. You are going to need a hell of a sump pump. Water seepage happens faster than you think. The walls will get weak and collapse on the sides and crushing you like a tin can.
@stvlu733 Yeah why did he put concrete on top but no concrete walls, LOL makes no sense. Also wine? Wtf What he should get is lots of water and dry foods that are good fro 15 years or so.
@stvlu733 Being underground during a chaos is better than the alternative. Houses are not safe because they are easy targets for thieves and government. When Hurricane Katrina took place, the local authorities confiscated guns from law abiding citizens and tried to force them to evacuate. It is better to hide than to fight.
@stvlu733 - "Wow a 20' Coffin if the walls collapse while in there."
That's what the rebar and concrete filling the gap around the container are for. The walls will not collapse any more than your average household cellar / basement will collapse. It's the same principle -- simple engineering.
He did it right, and it's even SAFER than the average home basement.
Spot -on a say what a nice wee snug and if there are any heavy - storms due then down the container you go,a swear a have got to take ma hat off for such a great and ideal way to make life that bit easyier. Ok you use it for wine and anything you want totally amazing fella for such a simple idea and chep too considering the current climate 12k for a big container and what a bonus having the J-C-B ,you certainly are a fine constuction man with rebar for better stengh as it's rock solid.....10/10
For those saying it's going to flood, take note of the surrounding ground. They're on a slight slope, up the side of a hill or shallow valley. They will not suffer any floods.
@mmmmm9872345 Water penetration into the 1' of soil around the edge of the excavation that the slab is bearing on will accellerate the collapes of the dirt walls over time, undermining the slab support. This will transfer the entire weight of the slab onto the container, which is going to buckle right where the door was cut out. The container will also settle into the ground as there is no footing to spread the load of the concrete it is carrying. Flooding is a small problem.
That thing is not going to last. The soil around the edges of the concrete will slowly fall into the void, and the edges of the concrete will be held by nothing. The container will bear the weight of all that concrete, and the cutout at the door will be the first to buckle. That door opening should have been reinforced with steel tubing, and the concrete cap should have been designed with footings placed a good 6' from the excavation or underpinned with pilings. Not to mention flooding, ect.
@sherpajones Furthermore, with the container sitting just on soil, the weight of all that concrete could cause it to settle into the soil, especially at the corners where you placed the beams that carry all those cinder blocks. A proper concrete footing should have been designed to carry those loads. I know this seams like a good idea, but I design buildings everyday and I can tell you that I really don't trust what I see.
I would make sure bottom of container is at least 4 inches off ground or rust will destroy floor in 20 years. Most important...all this needs to be hidden so tax man does not learn of it. A entry way in a simple tool shed would hide it just fine... keep it secret until you sell the house then use it as a selling point.
I wonder how the guy reinforced the walls of that shipping container? Everything I have read and heard says that the walls of these containers are not strong enough to support that kind of weight. All of the weight normally sits on the four corners. Pretty cool shelter either way!
@AKdreamz Transport containers and rail/cargo containers are very strong. The walls are what we refer to as waffle plates that are 1/4 inch steel. They can be stacked 15 high on a cargo ship with 100s of tons of weight without worry.
I wonder if this would work if you live in an earthquake prone place? I have thought about doing this with several containers interlinking them or perhaps wielding them together. You could put your whole structure underground and add some sky lights, solar panels, ventilation system, as well as plumbing, and maybe some hvac. Then wala live off the grid, and try to leave as little of a foot( carbon) print as possible. You might have to paint some type anti rusting agent on the exterior first.
I am a Contractor in the NW Ohio area, and we are starting to get some really bad storms with a lot of tornado activity. This would be a great thing to have!!! Look really simple to build too. Good job on your new shelter. Thank you for your Idea.
@nunvikingsofthesea dont be a moron. hed be a sitting duck in there. better off being mobile with no ties to something they could starve you to death inside of.

I am a Contractor in the NW Ohio area, and we are starting to get some really bad storms with a lot of tornado activity. This would be a great thing to have!!! Look really simple to build too. Good job on your new shelter. Thank you for your Idea.

should you have firing ports and a way to conceal the entrance so during a apocalyptic situatin you can hold out for a indefinite amount of time?

@nunvikingsofthesea dont be a moron. hed be a sitting duck in there. better off being mobile with no ties to something they could starve you to death inside of.

@SchleyFam1 I would like to disagree. If there was a nuclear attack, I would rather stay underground then remain on the surface.
