Liverladd - Ideally, democracy shoudn't have anything to do with personal wealth. But in America it does. The reason for that is, only candidates who can raise millions of dollars stand a chance of winning, because it is only those candidates who can launch an effective PR campaign. If one of the candidates were to not serve corporate interests to a considerable degree, then it would be impossible to raise enough money to stand a chance of winning an election.

I haven't seen the video yet, but want to respond to Kaafiristani. America, is in fact a really elitist society. A tiny proportion of the country owns an overwhelming portion of the wealth. In order to win an election you need to raise over a 100 million dollars. That is not proper democracy. That is the democracy of the elite. In France candidates are only alowed 45 minuted of air time for their entire campaign. That is civilised democracy.

tailorswing02 Democracy has nothing to do with personal wealth. There is hardly a country on the planet that doesn`t have a rich few and a poor majority. Demoracy means that even the poorest citizen of that country can vote out the present goverment and also can rise to the top in goverment to. That is what Democracy is.

Prior to driving a jet into the World Trade Center, Mohamed Atta, wrote a thesis on the beauty of traditional architecture in his homeland and how it was being destroyed by Western Architecture. The skyscraper is an American inspired cultural form. Its roots are in America unless you consider that their roots are in the building of the cave. Question: Does the denial and destruction of American culture promote Islamic culture or is it merely a reaction against it?

It is interesting that much of the anger in the mid-east is due to the global spread of American culture and its current world dominance. Every time I hear of some McDonald's in Pakistan being set on fire by an angry Pakistan mob I thing that this is the result of the spread of American culture.

However, if you want to get really technical...nobody is indigenous to anywhere. WE all originated in eastern Africa, so really we are all non-native. Also, if we are talking about AMERICAN culture, we are talking about the era that has it been called AMERICA in.

You are wrong about Jazz. Jazz is interestingly an American inspired musical form. Its roots are in New Orleans.
Jazz would not have been created if Africans had have stayed in Africe. It is the product of the mingling of cultures that happened in a culturally diverse environment called America.

As a Canadian, I'd have to say that America is the current World leader in culture. It dominates culture world-wide in many fronts: music and films provide great examples.
People often refer to high (elite) culture when they refer to culture. America may not have the same history as other nations but many of the examples provided by Grimli are examples of high culture (e.g. Jazz)

The transistor which changed the face of the world was from bell labs new jersey.
America has a massive culture, just people who follow an older culture have that "historic" feel so they think they are superior. Many of them cling on to past cultures (and attack the American one) because their culture today is a pale imitation off of their olden days.
