I would imagine the grounds to search comes from the fact that they are most likely at a known drug dealers front gate. Fair play for lightening the mood but I do have a bit of sympathy for the police here. There is a reason that they have nothing on them, either because the deal hasn't been done or they have passed it back through the gate. This I would personally say is reasonable grounds for a stop and search.

Should they a) hold the person while applying for a warrant to search them which could take several hours and takes up valuable time or b) using appropriate powers to search them and establish if they are involved and receipt about why they were search.
