  • that was a Sutherland-esque E flat, not a Callas-esque E flat.

  • lol yes in theory the same note as Callas although some historians argue hers was an F natural 6, I still feel based on the ambigious audio quality of the recording it was a semi-tone short; hence E natural and NOT a semi-tone higher! Deutekom did the same 'glissando sostennato con vibrato' here: Eb/E natural 6!

  • This is just...amazing. Love her so much and its a shame she isnt more of a household. Im proud to be an opera fan and to have heard her incredible talent

  • i must say that i find her voice to be quite pleasing in MOST situations....like during the entirety of this piece. however...when she employs her coloratura skills during songs that really require it, like "d'amore al dolce impero" i find that i can't even finish listening to the passages without laughing; however, there is something innately unique about this voice that keeps me coming back to it.

anyone else feel like that about deutekom?

  • @pointemeout I think D'amore al dolce impero is the worst example of Deutekom's skill. This aria is exact opposite. Anyway, people should hear her Mozart, Verdi, Bellini and Donizetti before judging her coloratura.

  • @pointemeout YES!

  • Unbelievable!

  • Her voice is healing my mind and improving my spirit.

  • I like the orchestration here and Deutekom sings this finale much better than June Anderson, who sounds vocally underpowered. Deutekom has a big dramatic coloratura voice and she has a sense of anger and majesty, very grand...love it.

  • her voice is beautiful, but nowherenear being dramatic enough to interpret Armida, especially in the finale. that E has no fury behind it, its just a well sung high note.

  • @DanyelHawkes: Dynamic range of Deutekoms voice was beyond capabilities of then recording equipment. Deutekom had to damp her voice because of that when making these studio recordings to prevent heavy sound distorsion. Please compare studio recording of her Der Hölle Rache (almost bel-canto) with her live english performance (heavy, dramatic, but distorted sound). You'll notice what I'm talking about :-) There was an article in The Opera Quarterly 1997 with quite deep analysis of this problem.

  • Nope, sorry--not "Like Callas." Deutekom is one of the most phenomenal singers of the last 50 years, but Callas produced a far heavier and darker tone up there than Deutekom (albeit more strained). Also, maybe speed of playback is wrong, but that's an E-natural.

  • @wwonka2 I m not comparing Deutekom to Callas or Fleming, please read the title again, it means that she choose to end her singing with the high F -flat or natural whatever- like Callas or Fleming did. That s all.

  • @agathosj By the way there'ss no such thing as as F flat NOR E sharp, because ONLY these two natural tones sit side by side NOT sharing a semi-tone in between, because 12 semi-tones do NOT divide evenly into the 7 natural tones, thus there is no in-between E & F. take C and D for instance they share Csharp in between 'them', persay.

  • @wwonka2 no I think that is an Eb

  • I am so happy that because of internet Cristina Deutekom finally gets the attention she deserves after her 25 year long carreer. Her voice is mighty and technically superb and moreover: recognisable!!!! Brava Cristina

  • Now THAT was just hair raising and terrific!! wonderful memories of an era when singers were all recognisable and they oozed talent from every pore. Brava Cristina what an ending that was spine tingling!

  • OOPs! Correction - the Deutekom cd of ARmida from 1973 Bregenz is available on House of Opera - cd#2934 I know - I know - House of Opera has a checkered career - but this cd is of great quality- I think because Deutekom's husband recorded it! Plus - all three tenors in the trio take the High C!! It is electrifying!!

  • That I know of - there are two recordings Deutekom did of Armida - one from 1970 in Venice available on Mondo Musica - and another in Bregenz in 1973 with the great - totally under-appreciated - Umberto Grilli. It is available on Premiere Opera. GET IT!!! It is FANTASTIC!!!

  • Deutekom, my favourite Armida EVER

She sung it complete in studio??

  • she is devine!

  • This is one of my favorite performances to listen to. Duetekom was FANTASTIC!!!!!!

  • Deutekom has the best final E-flat out of them all!

  • it's REALLY true. Crazy!!!

  • Wow! That e-flat sounded a lot like the young Sutherland! Overall, the voice reminds me a bit of Lorengar...I will start listening more to this great soprano.

  • Funny that you point that out, that her voice reminds you of Lorengar. The choice of Lorengar as Pamina and Deutekom as her mother on the Decco Solti Magic Flute could not have been a better one. They have the same sort of vibrato. Though deutekoms voice is a little less warm (placed a lot higher too).

  • It remains difficult to compare their voices. The gorgeous Lorengar was essentialy a lyric and Deutekoms range (and sheer size of the voice) was by far the bigger. Still, the resemblance definitely is there.

Pure technically though, Deutekoms voice is placed a lot lower then Lorengars. She never sang with the "high sit" of a coloratura - much more like a spinto, but with an abundance of Randschwingung.

  • I'm living in Holland and off course we're so proud of having a Voice like her's. Should anyone beinterested I have the complete recording of het Armida LIVE!!!!

  • long live Holland!

  • I heard Deutekom live in Hartford CT. in the 70's singing Elvira in I Puritani...the production was threadbare but the singing was spectacular...I loved Deutekom....the "yodeling" sound appealed to me...I own many of her recordings on vinyl and when I get in the mood for her, she never disappoints me.

  • Podrías mandarnos D'amore al dolce impero? Es alucinante en esta versión.

  • Merveilleux !

  • fantastic images... they suit this part so well!!!! bravo...

  • This is amazing! Please tell us where you found it!

Rossini should not have written opera seria, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong-he's among my favourite of composers, but...this is like listening to Haydn, who wrote happy melodies during storm scenes. Thank God Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi wrote music befitting of the mood of what's happening on stage, i.e. tragic music for tragic endings. This is comical; almost TOO comical for an opera like this. But long live Rossini!

  • Hi, this is from the double cd "Legendary voices - Cr. Deutekom", Philips. I doubt that you would find this compilation as it dates back to 1999. I will try to upload a torrent of this within the next few weeks. Thank you

  • this is highly dramatic in a "bel canto way" of being dramatic. I personally get chills with this part Rossini was a genius in Opera Seria as well as in Opera Buffa

  • @Sturmwaffen

I agree about Rossini and serious music except for William Tell where emotions are more aligned to text and plot.

    Deutekom is stunning here.

  • @Sturmwaffen Donizetti wrote better music for opera seria you're right but I disagree, this is very dramatic music from Rossini, not just a "happy melody" or comical. It's magical and out of this world.

  • @Sturmwaffen Interesting. THis is my favorite opera, and I think the finale sounds very angry, not happy at all. And the part before this, ''dove son io'' sounds very sad. Throughout the opera there are more angry/sad melodies so I 'don't understand why you think this too comical hahaha :P

  • This is fantastic ... which recording is this? I'm having no luck trying to track it down :(

  • I downloaded this recording form a rapidshare link a few months ago. It may still be active. You can also stream it at operatoday. Just google "deutekom armida" or "deutekom armida rapidshare". Now, if anyone can help me find "The Art of Christina Deutekom" (which has been discontinued) that would be great!

  • grazie mille. ciao dall'Italia

  • film??please!

  • Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein, with him and De Niro.

  • Bellissimo. Helena Bonham Carter in che film?

  • Thank you for your comment. Yes it's Helena.
