  • That is a cavernous basso profundo... to compare him to Reizen is like comparing apples and oranges. Beautifully sung by a huge profundo voice, I am sure it would have been amazing to hear live !

  • A very beautiful aria. I didn't know this piece before - in my country only the most popular 3-4 Russian operas are played, and even those not enough.

  • one of my top three, but still i believe that mark reizen is unsurpassed , with christoff being close!

  • this individual is rather talanted, i may just be a little biest due in part to my norse blood, and also in part to my taste for the low basso profondo ov the russians. good stuff. cheers,

  • bravo

  • I think Mikhaylov's voice is beautiful. Darkest? Blackest? My vote would be for Jose Mardones. Listen to his 1922 ? recording of Verdi's Tu sul labbro from Nabucco. Maxim is becoming a favorite of mine as well. Also, there is Ivan Petrov.

  • Check the greatest Polish basso - Bernard Ładysz, for example singing "Ten zegar stary" in the "Haunted Manor" opera.

  • Thanks for the info! Bernard Ładysz truly has a beautiful voice. By the way, Jose Mardones is here on youtube. If you haven't tried him out yet, look for In Tiefen Keller.

  • I've heard that already, but thanks. Ładysz is on youtube as well singing a few pieces.

  • Hello friends at first Maxim never studied in conservatory... he was kind of minister but in soviet time his church was broken down... after this he become theater singer Glinka's Ivan Susanin was his best role and a lot of other Russian opera awaken by his voice and Piragov.

  • I´m just now discovering this wonderful bass. There´s a unique sharpness, openness, "bite" to his voice.

But, as typical for the low basses, in the high end of his range he loses that sharpness, that "bite".

But the middle and low part of his range sound great.

  • This is even better than the Reizen one.

    Thank you! :)

  • Yes I think his tone in general is more powerful and certainly more menising! I prefer Reizen for the climax right at the end though.

  • You are right, Reizen had brilliant finishes on most things he sang, he could keep going and going, great breath control.

Btw, your playlists and videos are superb, thank you so much for posting such wonderful singing!

  • I have Maxim Mikhaylov as the first video you see on my page. I enjoy this type of music and his unique sound. Thanks for posting this video.

  • ugly?! ha! it's bone chilling:D

  • I agree! I was just repeating what some say. You couldnt exactly say he has a beautiful voice, but it is bone chilling! I love it:)
