oh wow, the stupidity of some comments here "SR-71..blah blah blah" yah, and it's built for upper atmospheric surveillance, and isn't very agile, it would've taken forever to turn around. No, it wasn't about the top speed of the plane OR the car, it was about how quick it could get from point A to B and back again.

Doesn't matter whether the Jet was going vertical, would've won either way. Thrust SSC takes 10 bloody minutes to turn around when it's STOPPED, it can't even turn when it's moving.

The best way to turn aroundin a plane is to go straight up that slows the aircraft and gains altitude then it can do a sharp turn, back down it can get the speed back really fast.
