  • Forget the bloody wig. What an amazing rendition of one of my all-time favourite songs.

  • He has done much better, this is poor, credit were credit is due. Too much sentiment on here, listen to 18 carat.....now thats good.....

  • this is a treasure

  • He made a right cunt out of bowie anyway. What a loss we are at without Billy MacKensie.

  • @bargeanimal Hating on Bowie? for shame.

  • Hey cool it with the wig business. Think about what can be salvaged from this man. I will personally never forget this great man. Not only did he have a voice to die for but he wrote some beautiful songs too.

  • THE BEST MALE SINGER TO EVER COME FROM SCOTLAND HERE BILLY AT HIS BEST MISSED FOREVER PAT FROM DUNDEE

  • I love billy but this last of the summer wine c,mon lol

  • Lovely Billy as Mickey Dolenz...gizza break!

  • I've never seen this. But I know billy had pretty much given up pretense of hair years before this. I think its a stage joke.

  • Magnificent -- just about the best British male singer ever in my view.

  • WOWWWW !!!!!

  • Fantastic! A legend, sadly missed

  • i went to a party in edinburgh about this time, he wore an elvis wig and just sang like

an angel, never heard a voice like this in my life never will.He was such a sweet guy as well .also my mum and dad had 2 of his whippets he loved his dogs helped me a lot with singing

  • Here is a case of the cover version outshining the original! Intimately beautiful!!

  • Watched this so many times and you'll not hear a better version of this great song!

  • Thankyou so much for posting this. Utterly amazing.

  • For me, Billy Mackenzie had the best voice of all time. There has been no-one before or since to even touch him.

  • Simply beautiful....go bless Billy McKenzie

  • stunning, breathtaking, heartbreaking xx

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard sung by Billy. His voice is totally mesmerising. I always have a tear in my eye just thinking about him

  • I thought Bowie's version was good, but this is incredible. He was one of the greatest singers ever.

  • R.I.P. May he rest in peace. Eternal memory.

  • Oh Billy, why did you have to do it son. He must be among the best singers the world has ever known; if he but knew it.

    "You touched me..."

    God love you.

  • Utterly brilliant. Totally superb. Ewan.

  • he is wearing a wig here...his hair was going a few years before, next minute....a full head of hair! he must have had serious issues with that

  • who cares. i would trade my hair to sing like that. sincerely baldy.

  • @caltontongs73

I'd always presumed the dreadful wig to be a wee joke on Billy's part.

Billy is beautiful, with or without hair. :-)

  • @sgtrayelwood i think you mean ''was'' beautiful...he killed himself,as for you saying it was a joke on his part,erm...no,i think i have to agree with caltontongs73,i would agree that billy had issues with his hair loss,he always wore caps.

  • @caltontongs73 Looks like a wig, and a bad one at that.

  • @sirtinycreep

    Well, no shit, Sherlock...

  • @caltontongs73 I think there's an element of hommage to Bowie in the head to toe outfit Billy is sporting. The hair is very David Jones transitioning into David Bowie...

  • wow

  • a haunting performance by Billy , brilliant ! Bowie would aprove ... God Bless !

  • Bernard Butler and Billy worked together for a short while. Billy quit the project, and David McAlmont was recruited. Fact. And yes, its a wig. Billy used to refer to this performance as "Wild is the Wig".

  • So sad

  • god bless you billy lad, beautiful.

  • God Bless you Billy. Eternal rest x

  • Scotland should be proud of Billy Mc Kenzie.

  • sprecher not far wrong with walker and buckley

if i had a time machine ......... if only he knew how much he had an impact on us the sad thing is too many people dont know who billy or the associates are

  • BIG VOICE FROM HEAVEN

  • Beautiful. A bit like McAlmont and Butler, around that time. Billy was a flawed genius. So sad.

  • Echoes of another life! I had forgotten just how moving this is......................RIP BillyX

  • Syrup...!

  • I remember when i first heard Party fears two......it made you proud to be Scottish :)

  • Scott Walker meets Jeff Buckley in the dark room. Just joking. I have been in love with his voice and music for since the mid80s now. Bowie´s version of this Toimkin classic is rather different but also very good if not better. From Billie i prefer Gloomy sunday. i won´t get much glommier than than that. Lush fin de siecle - perfect if you think about drowing yourself

  • Very Scott Walker

  • nice one bros brother

  • you are part of my history Billy, miss your talent ..

  • ur part of my history Billy,miss u ..

  • This is really touching. RIP Billy.

  • Can't believe those high notes held so long...he definitely mastered the song...Bowie is still my favorite rendition but this is the first time I've heard Billy do it and I must say....very, very close...wayyyy above the other contenders.

  • Bloody hell, that was quite quite beautiful!

  • got all the assosciates albums from johhny his brother when i stayed with him

  • Some chanter Billy son - not appreciated enough at the time - Such a shame - you are sadly missed Billy.

    Depression is a bassa.

  • Astonishing. His voice is as luminous as ever. One can only marvel at it. Thank you for posting this.

  • he was great.

  • God. He was amazing. What a voice. He is like Mozart. Not appreciated while he was alive, but his genius is recognized in death. How sad. I always loved him. Too bad America never recognized his genius. I discovered his music on a whim and always loved it...

  • A great song performed by an amazing singer. Sadly missed.

  • i love the wig - of course it's ajoke. he was evidently very sensitive to the fact he was losign his hair. Hence the hats and wig

  • What a song, what a voice. The hair is a bit of a joke though.

  • Effortless beauty ~ supremely affecting voice and a wonderful spirit.

  • This is just beautiful, it is so full of emotion. I miss you Billy!

  • oh i just love billie ....please im crying

    dave a x

  • What a talent, you're sadly missed Billy! x

  • love this version . billy had a unique voice :) i have him singing boys keep swinging and the secret life of arabia two bowie tracks

  • A song written for his voice...

  • fantastic!!!

    we miss billy

he was one of the best singers ever

  • Oh my god, that took my breath away!

  • is that wig a joke?

  • My favorite Bowie song ever, and even better by my favorite vocalist...SUPERB!

  • why the hell is he wearing a wig????

  • This is so beautiful I'm speechless. Billy had a voice of an angel.

  • I'm speechless. A truly divine version. Billy had a voice of an angel.

  • Is there anybody out there who has a copy of Billy Mackenzie's version of 'Gloomy Sunday' ????

The best version I have ever heard bar none - the tape I had it on broke and would love to hear it again

  • its on "sulk" the album

  • Strange its not on my addition, must be a different pressing. such a shame as this is an amazing song showing billy's amazing note range.

  • @lordbodo63 Totally disagree with you on that. Always felt G S, was the black sheep or should that be whippet?, of the Sulk LP. Very well sung as always but the backing was wrong for me. Too synth sounding, which imo dates it alot. Also could have done without the drums. Could you imagine a version, with just Billy accompanied by piano a la Kites? I'm feeling close to tears already! There is somewhere on youtube a very early recording of G S, poss by composer. Check that out

  • Nina Simone's one still is the best!

  • billy could sing the phone book and you would still be captivated

  • I think Billy may have given Mr. Bowie a run for his money on this one. Great version...and those long, held notes are flawless!!!

  • if there would be more such beautiful song as this one this world could be a better place.

  • this isn't bad, but I think Bradford and Lasso's version is much better and alive. then again, I'm a little bias in my opinion. but check it out, you decide.

  • I can remember when the Associates broke onto the scene in the early 80's... they were a breath of fresh air.... so original & unique....... what a loss.

  • i wonder if he covered it , because Bowie did , and they probably have similar voice

  • Billy Mackenzie had one of the best voices in the world, this is so beautiful I'm in tears.

  • Greatly missed, what a voice. Thanks for posting this.

  • Billy the voice of an angel

  • Billy Mackenzie phenomenal talent huge fan............The voice of an angel.......RIP

  • What a singer! My goosebumps are in tears...great to hear it live, even better than the recorded version, but why is he wearing that stupid wig??

    Thanks for posting!!

  • I have this on "Eurocentric" but to see it performed live is fantastic.Thank you.

  • Thanks so much for this,it is such a real privilage to witness these poignant and emotional performances from billy,it was a terrible loss.

  • love you always billy you are my inspiration x

  • Stunning....what a great loss the world has of Billy's musical talent....his voice always brings tears to my eyes & gives me shivers
