Some of the best cinematography I've ever seen.... Fantastic movie. The pace of the long, slow, extended wide shots lulls you in like watching a slow boil. And when Tracy delivers the judo chop to the throat the tension snaps like an unexpected broken bone.
For years I thought this was a Western: I never even bothered to watch it. I guess I read about it somewhere or saw a clip, but I had to see it then. Wow! It is riveting from beginning to end! & Is there a bigger cast of unsavory or unsympathetic characters? & BTW, Ericson later starred w/ Anne Francis in her hip show Honey West.
The screen door was locked unintentionally. Watching Borgnine fly through it ripping out the screws makes it look so genuine. And he stayed in character. A real happy accident.
Thanks for posting this. My Dad introduced me to this movie many years ago. When Tracy read the scene he refused to believe that it was possible to beat up a guy with one hand. The martial arts guy (and stand in for the leg throw) did a couple of moves on Tracy (who was no mean fighter himself and always getting into brawls) which convinced him!
One of the shittest films ever.

the old movies had more dialogue. After Tracy kicks arse, he sure has a lot to say.

Youi're right on.
A superb scene from a brilliant movie.
Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan and Ernest Borgnine all excude sinister energy, yet all alll dwarfed by Tracy's humble humanity.
Ryan played racists a number of times, but in real life was a very kindly tolerant human being.
