  • awesome channel, i own seasons 1-3, on dvd, now i'm attempting to find both parts of season 4. i love this show, and i think the seaview looked great with 4 windows, and she looked good with 8 as well.

  • "Voyage To See What's On The Bottom."

  • Just nice.

  • It's too bad they changed the Seaview from the eight window version to the four window version. It never looked right.

Btw, the Fly Sub berth could have been installed by cutting the Seaview in two and installing it between the two sections.

  • In spite of what us TV Geeks have said, I still think this is cool stuff. Just knowing that new FX shots were made for one or two episodes is a big deal in penny-pinching Irwin Allen land.

  • well, remember that where the FS berthed, would have made it impossible for there to be the observation deck, plus in season 2-the coning tower was moved (along with control room to the very front of the ship, while the sail, which housed the periscope was way back midship

I liked the original sub much better-the new one looked "made for tv"

  • Yes, all angles on the bridge were to the sides or two the aft part of Seaview. In order to see out the windows everyone had to leave control deck. They took out that position of the two guys in tandem controlling ballast and pitch I believe to.

  • After 31/2 years of awesome fx Abbots boys lost the plot with this, it was awful and really disappointed.Shot from the wrong angles It looked hurried, I would imagine they were highly displeased themselves. It spoilt the shows it was in. A shame as so much they did was so exemplary and ground-breaking, much of the underwater stuff they shot has yet to be matched by todays technology.

  • If memory serves me right, Irwin was going to introduce a new piece of hardware in the fourth season called the "Sea Crab" a vehicle that can retrieve things at the bottom of the sea. Looks like as a cost saving measure they merely incorporated the feature into the Flying Sub.

  • The Sea Crab was included in the Voyage playset by Remco. Don't know if it's exactly how the Fox model department designed it.

  • ToolMan, as you probably already know, Remco had a habit of taking serious liberties with the way they designed their toys based on props from TV series. Most of them looked ridiculous! So, I'd hazard a guess to say the 'Sea Crab' bares little resemblance to whatever Irwin's designers had in mind.

  • The Flying Sub was one of the reasons I became a fan of the show when I was a kid.I love the takeoff and landings.I wish they would bring the show back and keep the format as is.

  • @quarqill According to Sheila Mathews Allen (Irwin Allen's widow), Steven Spielberg came to her home and discussed interest in reviving "VTTBOTS" and "Lost in Space" for TV. She said she never heard from him again after that meeting. 2 years later, the Spielberg produced series, "SeaQuest: DSV" and "Earth 2" debuted on NBC.

Faint, thinly disguised ripoffs of Irwin Allen's properties.

    Go figure!

  • Do you have other footage of the Flying Sub?

  • Nice idea, but poorly thought out by the Special FX crew. From the window angle you can clearly see that there is NO ONE inside the Flying Sub, and that the interior is filled with the mechanical 'guts' of the claws + the never-used landing gear.

  • Not to mention the gigantic-looking car headlight mounted behind the landing gear, where the passengers should be sitting.

  • Iff you take a close look, you can see the mechinism for the claws through the windshield into the model. Also the landing gear was first created for a never filmed sequence where the flying sub made a carrier landing. (The old Aurora model of the flying sub even included the arrestor hook!)

  • I don't remember that...how cool!

  • I don't either!
