He did say he made choices which had their short comings as well as their strengths, but the guy knew what he was doing...period. I love the way the mics cannot handle his overtones. This was a voice that had to be heard in the hall. Only wish I had been old enough to do so!!!

I think earlph should learn about singing before he has the audacity to criticize one of the greatest singers ever. Listen to the color of the voice. And his technique in the passaggio is exemplary, not like Domingo who passes registers in the nose. With his voice, Maurizio becomes credible as a lover , prince and hero. I studied with Corelli and Bechi and they were in awe of del Monaco's voice. The squillo and pure sound are phenomonal. Name me one other like him.
Remember, this it is sung at the limit of human listening capacity. 2x's the power of any tenor ever. Also --he hold the pitches for ages, over and over the passagio, and he is killing the microphone level with squillo.
I give it a 9.6 --equal in a different way to corelli.
Not everywhere as good , reminds me here and there of a bicycle tire running empty ( lack of air ) Seems to be somewhat in a RUSH as well.
Plenty tenos BELIEVE they can sing this MASTER PIECE... very few are blessed with a voice and passion that realy can do so...on a scale of 10 I would give a 6 at the most Sufficient , but not rememberable..

Es in creible el timbre que tuvo este increible tenor, nunca se habían saturado mis parlantes con la grabacion de una voz masculina, y se muy bien que no es custion de la grabacion, sino de la potencia de su timbre, aparte, Gran ejecución del aria. Como siempre, Maravilloso Mario del Monaco, aunque lo critiquen musicalmente es toda una leyenda.

Very beautiful. I wish we could hear this remastered with all the lushness of his

Es un placer enorme escuchar al más grande tenor dramático de todos los tiempos, pese a la evidente mala calidad de la grabación.
Al lado suyo "Los 3 Tenores" y otros que por ahí andan, parecen simples "hormiguitas..." aprendiendo a cantar.
