The documentary's message is about the wealth of talent that is locked up. People are drawn to the tragedy of his life and music. In life he couldn't be more different than his family. He fell in love but had no chance of sharing it. He has volumes of music in his head with little means to release it. He's a tortured soul. His life is genuine darkness. Not his style.
maybe it's because id never listened to him before, but honestly, when i watched this movie it was hard to keep from complaining about it to my friends (who were into it.) i see him as a whiny brat who did things for attention- i dont see his art or music as thoughtful at all, or attractive. i think he's bipolar/manic depressive and was never properly counceled in his youth.
