  • stupid

  • that drawless animation stuff sorta looks really bad.

  • You'll have to check the finished product.

  • you suck

  • it's more than 4 minutes.... yet it's a 4 minute film school production?

  • Yeah the video is longer, but the 4 minutes started when there clock started.

  • Your shit sucks dood. All of it.

  • Rob, thanks so much. that was really helpful. i know what you'd use FCP for but what part of it do you use After effects for? thanks Rob b

  • I started off with it muted... felt the same way...what was it about roughly?

  • you just use the word ' puppets' as draw less animation. it is puppets film school

  • Um on the claw puppets like the fish can you use like green tape for the stick?

  • I am so excited to try this! We are working on the puppets using cardboard, random metal and plastic stuff, foil, and other general junk. Where would you suggest finding the grabber arm things? Our dollar store doesn't carry them.

  • you should make an episode about how to make the puppets!!!!

  • awsome!!!

    5/5

  • very cool work 5/5

  • an·i·ma·tion -noun

    1. animated quality; liveliness; vivacity; spirit: to talk with animation.

    2. an act or instance of animating or enlivening.

    3. the state or condition of being animated.

    OR

    4. the process of preparing animated cartoons.

    Draw-LESS -

to "draw less." Hence the puppets.

    Hope that clears everything up.

  • I dunno Rob, this is puppetry, not "animation." You can't "animate" something already capable of movement. You wouldn't say you "animated" an actor, would you?

  • Actually the term "drawless animation" is a joke. Like Harryhausen coined the term Dynamation or Anderson with Supermarionation.

Seems like a pretty reasonable description for the little shorts I do in my apartment.

Do you win something if you prove me wrong? Like a piece of cake or 20$?

  • I won your attention! Now go make a sequel to Robot Bastard! I like the part where he shoves the guy's arm through his head.

  • Well, if you do it frame by frame, you can animate an actor. It's called pixellation and it's in the video for Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer".

  • yes, as you say, it is called "pixellation" and not "animation."

  • I love that death cab video. Major props to you!

  • I liked this a lot. I see that some folk are having trouble with calling it animation but that seems like the sort of semantic best left for the philosophy classroom. The idea of getting the job done AND having fun playing with toys is very appealing, I have to admit. Plus, going to the garbage for your actors has a very nice ring to it.

  • I liked this clip, but have to agree this is not animation, "drawless" or otherwise. It would be better described as bargain basement puppetry captured, isolated, and then composited with other elements. There is no illusion involved, except the combination of isolated elements, each of which were captured in real time. I think comparing this to the time consuming and painstaking artistic process of stop motion, cell or line animation is self serving at best, and highly inaccurate.

  • i liked it a lot....

    cheers.

  • this si just a diferent style, i dont liked realy... but is another way to animate

  • You're awesome, Rob! I'm a huge fan now!

  • Yeah men thank you for telling this information, but I just have bought Pinnacle studio and spended some money. I would post video responce, which I made without any green screen only with little photo-video camera and "windows movie maker"

  • Definitely has a unique feel to it, and at least seems less labour intensive using puppets than drawing cell by cell, but then some people are more gifted for 2D animation. I'd rather sculpt. Nice.

  • yeah that would be great if I didn't have a job or a life outside of making stupid puppet movies.

  • I wouldn't really consider this animation. It's more like puppets combined with green screen. Although very creative, it's not animation. Animation creates the illusion of movement, not actual movement. Which is what he's using here.

  • Making any inanimate object artificially move is "Animation". Look up the definition.

    I Love Rob Schrab!

  • No, making an inanimate object artificially move is not animation. Are you saying that if I wave my pen around in front of a camera, that's animation? And according to the Oxford Dictionay, "The technique of filming successive drawings to create an illusion of movement when it is shown as a sequence." Dude, I'm an animator, I've been one for 5 years. I know my shit. I'm not discrediting Rob Schrab or anything, I'm just saying this technique is not animation.

  • Oh shut UP! Of COURSE this is animation, you moron! By your bone-headed definition e.g. "Toy Story" and "South Park" wouldn't be animation either! You are ANIMATING OBJECTS... get it??! Therefore it is ANIMATION! Why so defensive? Let me guess, you're broke and out of work, right?? Ooooh, and FIVE YEARS??! LOL... I've been doing all types of animation for almost TWENTY, sorry! 2D, 3D, cell, stop-motion... and MODEL, so just get a life and stop blathering. And really GIVES A FUCK?? Bit ANAL, huh?

  • Uh, yeah. I do recognize South Park and Toy Story as animation. Of course I do. Toy Story and South Park fit perfectly in my definition. And it's not my "bone-headed" definition. It's Oxford's. Like I said, animation is to give the ILLUSION of movement, using a sequence of images. This isn't a sequence of images. This is using live video footage. This isn't animation. This is puppets in front of a green screen. And no, I'm not out of work. I'm currently studying animation at university.

  • yeah i'm doin animation in high school and your right man

  • this aint animation

  • Is there another name for Drawless Animation? I cant find it anywhere!

  • mutilating toys, hmm, sounds interesting, mwahahahahahahahaha!

  • I want a tut on anime style animation.

I mean, this does look really cool and fun, so maybe sometime I'll try it, but I'd still prefer something anime style.

  • "I dont know some shitty toy store" ROFL

  • This is great! all i need is a green screen! lol

but i guess for stuff like this i dont need much.. i just need 1 peice of lime green construction paper.. liek the cardboard kind or whatever it is.. yeah..

  • Drawless animation? I believe that's more commonly refered to as stop-motion.

Gosh, go watch some Robot Chicken!

  • Takes too long! Do not want!

  • Why sir, I do think you mean

    TL;DR

  • bro, did you even watch the vid? there was no stop motion!

  • Yeah I made that comment after he said it's like treating each frame like that of a cartoon.

But it's really just puppets, in which case why the hell didn't he just say that?

    It's not an original concept.

  • This was hella cool, thank you for the video, I liked it! I like tearing toys apart and mutating them muhahaha! :)

  • That's right. Stop giving George Lucas ideas! lol

  • u went over 4 minutes x3

  • I agree, DONT GIVE ANOTHER FAN FILM TO GEORGE LUCAS!

  • ahhhh what the hells wrong with u?

  • This rocks! :-)

  • That was really cool! I always was curious on how they did animations like that. :o

  • i like the "Crooked Teeth" Music vid he made!

  • That was surprisingly good and best of all.. it was pretty funny... a shitty toy store.. lol

  • blaaaaaaaaaaaa i love indy mogul!!!!!!!! blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • does anyone know where i can download something like final cut for free?

  • you can get the after effects 30 day trial

  • I did that before and had a hard time finding any practical use for it.

  • DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THAT INDY MOGUL DIDNT BLEEP "SHITTY"? Hahhaha, they usually do.

  • Fucking awesome guys. I've always been a huge Schrab fan so this was a huge treat.

  • hi, indy,

    a good one :P

but for the 1st part, you still have to hold the camera very steady, I think a tripod is much better, you can swing your cam on a tripod, still better than hands,

    lol

  • or you can stick a small tripod under the cam to become some kind of 'SteadyCam', haha

  • lastly, this vid is a bit blurry, I don't know why, maybe the lights, the cam, the editor, or the file transfering process...

  • (blurry under HQ)

  • man, i love it

    gave me loads of ideas

  • I saw the snoopy poster behind him in drywall unzipped.

  • re-invite him :)

  • wow, this ought to be my favorite episode on indymogul so far - now i wat more of it for certain.

  • I have 4:11! =D

  • That was a great video on how to make a great animation effect.

  • That "guy" is probably one of the greater writers of all time when it came from the mid-nineties comic era. Witty character designs, his style is probably something that'll be copied for years.

  • He still sucks, I'm entitled to my opinion. Nothing against him, it's an original idea, and it's creative, I just think he sucks.

  • sweet. i like the cheap toy props!

  • ROB SCHRAB = WIN!

  • that was so inspiring

  • this is so cool. love traditional animation, but this seems really fun. gotta check out :PPPP

  • ty alot this it just what i want to see right up my allie

  • That's so cool...

  • The boxes on your shelf are smiling. Are they alive?!

  • Cool good advice! Defo use, check out my vids and sub if u wnt :)

  • does this remind anyone else of The Mighty Boosh?

if their budget goes down anymore, we may see these techniques in season 4/the upcoming movie.

  • What the heck is Skud the disposable assassin? I've never even heard of it.

  • I've heard of it, but haven't read it myself. It's a comic series about a disposable assassin robot called Scud (basically, these assassin robots can be acquired with the use of vending machines). During the first story, he is sent to kill a mutant and he discovers the warning label on him that talks about self-destructing after completing his mission. So, he decides not to complete his mission and becomes a freelance mercenary. Doing a Scud fan film with drawless animation could work.

  • There is also a short movie, if I'm not mistaken, set in the Scud universe or something like it. I don't recall the name but someone had posted it on youtube.

  • it just shows a black screen for 0 sec. whats wrong. :(

  • if its 0 seconds it means it didn't even appear. :S

  • i watched it on there site and it works now

  • wow i want to try this

  • This 4 minute film school took 20 minutes. YouTube is slower than molasses today. Friday I guess, everybody's looking for the Friday porn.

  • You're my hero for doing this episode! You just saved my contest video that I'm working on. It was going to be a whiteboard animation. I've got the script and the voices done, but I've been putting off the rest because I suck at whiteboard drawings. But you just inspired me to do it as a drawless animation! I'd better get going though, because it's due tomorrow.

  • AWSOME GUYS!!!

  • Wow awesome Drawless Animation!!!!!! Gives me ideas.

  • That was amazing! I just bought the complete collection of Ringwald and Molly from Mr Schrab to learn from, and it's amazing! You can see all of his films online, but it's worth it to buy the high quality DVD to really see the art that goes into everything he does! Way to go Rob, and way to go Indymogul!

  • yay monster house!

  • hahaha yeah the other day i was like "hey, what ever happened to that show monster house?" lol

  • Sure it was Monster House the series or Monster House the movie?

  • umm...i didnt know there was a movie.

  • Yeah there was a movie too. However, given the varied list of work he's been apart of it's quite possible it was one or the other.

  • Cool

  • Awesome episode!

  • Wow... awesome!! I'm gonna look for some videos of Rob!
