this got really annoying 5/8ths of the way through and i couldn't bear to watch it any longer. i am making this comment with the video out of sight, and my computer muted.
I am so excited to try this! We are working on the puppets using cardboard, random metal and plastic stuff, foil, and other general junk. Where would you suggest finding the grabber arm things? Our dollar store doesn't carry them.
I dunno Rob, this is puppetry, not "animation." You can't "animate" something already capable of movement. You wouldn't say you "animated" an actor, would you?
I liked this a lot. I see that some folk are having trouble with calling it animation but that seems like the sort of semantic best left for the philosophy classroom. The idea of getting the job done AND having fun playing with toys is very appealing, I have to admit. Plus, going to the garbage for your actors has a very nice ring to it.
I liked this clip, but have to agree this is not animation, "drawless" or otherwise. It would be better described as bargain basement puppetry captured, isolated, and then composited with other elements. There is no illusion involved, except the combination of isolated elements, each of which were captured in real time. I think comparing this to the time consuming and painstaking artistic process of stop motion, cell or line animation is self serving at best, and highly inaccurate.
Yeah men thank you for telling this information, but I just have bought Pinnacle studio and spended some money. I would post video responce, which I made without any green screen only with little photo-video camera and "windows movie maker"
Definitely has a unique feel to it, and at least seems less labour intensive using puppets than drawing cell by cell, but then some people are more gifted for 2D animation. I'd rather sculpt. Nice.
I wouldn't really consider this animation. It's more like puppets combined with green screen. Although very creative, it's not animation. Animation creates the illusion of movement, not actual movement. Which is what he's using here.
No, making an inanimate object artificially move is not animation. Are you saying that if I wave my pen around in front of a camera, that's animation? And according to the Oxford Dictionay, "The technique of filming successive drawings to create an illusion of movement when it is shown as a sequence." Dude, I'm an animator, I've been one for 5 years. I know my shit. I'm not discrediting Rob Schrab or anything, I'm just saying this technique is not animation.
Oh shut UP! Of COURSE this is animation, you moron! By your bone-headed definition e.g. "Toy Story" and "South Park" wouldn't be animation either! You are ANIMATING OBJECTS... get it??! Therefore it is ANIMATION! Why so defensive? Let me guess, you're broke and out of work, right?? Ooooh, and FIVE YEARS??! LOL... I've been doing all types of animation for almost TWENTY, sorry! 2D, 3D, cell, stop-motion... and MODEL, so just get a life and stop blathering. And really GIVES A FUCK?? Bit ANAL, huh?
Uh, yeah. I do recognize South Park and Toy Story as animation. Of course I do. Toy Story and South Park fit perfectly in my definition. And it's not my "bone-headed" definition. It's Oxford's. Like I said, animation is to give the ILLUSION of movement, using a sequence of images. This isn't a sequence of images. This is using live video footage. This isn't animation. This is puppets in front of a green screen. And no, I'm not out of work. I'm currently studying animation at university.
but i guess for stuff like this i dont need much.. i just need 1 peice of lime green construction paper.. liek the cardboard kind or whatever it is.. yeah..
but for the 1st part, you still have to hold the camera very steady, I think a tripod is much better, you can swing your cam on a tripod, still better than hands,
That "guy" is probably one of the greater writers of all time when it came from the mid-nineties comic era. Witty character designs, his style is probably something that'll be copied for years.
I've heard of it, but haven't read it myself. It's a comic series about a disposable assassin robot called Scud (basically, these assassin robots can be acquired with the use of vending machines). During the first story, he is sent to kill a mutant and he discovers the warning label on him that talks about self-destructing after completing his mission. So, he decides not to complete his mission and becomes a freelance mercenary. Doing a Scud fan film with drawless animation could work.
There is also a short movie, if I'm not mistaken, set in the Scud universe or something like it. I don't recall the name but someone had posted it on youtube.
You're my hero for doing this episode! You just saved my contest video that I'm working on. It was going to be a whiteboard animation. I've got the script and the voices done, but I've been putting off the rest because I suck at whiteboard drawings. But you just inspired me to do it as a drawless animation! I'd better get going though, because it's due tomorrow.
That was amazing! I just bought the complete collection of Ringwald and Molly from Mr Schrab to learn from, and it's amazing! an·i·ma·tion -noun
1. animated quality; liveliness; vivacity; spirit: to talk with animation.
2. an act or instance of animating or enlivening.
3. the state or condition of being animated.
OR
4. the process of preparing animated cartoons.
Draw-LESS -
to "draw less." Hence the puppets.
Hope that clears everything up.

briandoom 3 years ago
Actually the term "drawless animation" is a joke. Like Harryhausen coined the term Dynamation or Anderson with Supermarionation.
Seems like a pretty reasonable description for the little shorts I do in my apartment.
Do you win something if you prove me wrong? Like a piece of cake or 20$?
RobSchrab 3 years ago
I won your attention! Now go make a sequel to Robot Bastard! I like the part where he shoves the guy's arm through his head.
briandoom 3 years ago
Well, if you do it frame by frame, you can animate an actor. It's called pixellation and it's in the video for Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer".
NobleApple 3 years ago
yes, as you say, it is called "pixellation" and not "animation."
