I honestly think this is a damn good cover. It's good to make things your own. And honestly, I think Dime would approve. And isn't that's what really matters? Not the egos of a thousand metal-heads who think metal is the only way.
What's hilarious to me is that this is how Pantera would sound like if they weren't trend killers hahaha if they played some alternative grunge crap xD
I'm an undying Pantera fan, and I still do enjoy this version, but I just don't buy it when he says "I love it" at the end, when he hears the original. It just sounds forced.
Quite the contradiction in practice here... Plus singing softly doesn't mean her 'feeling' it. The verse is also very much 'what it's like' by Everlast. I dunno, nothing sticks out other than the guys overbearing sensitive camp fire singing. Nothing against their composition but considering the meaning and the place that this song comes from, it deserves the respect of something original and interesting if covered. Not Ben Folds Five...c'mon man
I agree that the guys in Pantera would love this tune. Good songwriting is good songwriting whether its coming out of a Marshall stack or the sound whole on an acoustic guitar..
why would anyone "pop" something that is anti-mainstream? therefore this is definetly not pop and I love this. really shows how much of a genius mr. Anselmo is
Reaction: 1. It's great that someone like this guy loves (supposedly) Pantera, and is talking about them on a radio station.
2. He made a shitty version of a metal song that was DESIGNED to sound abrasive and unlike anything else (trendkill!). He turned an abrasive metal song into a beautiful pop song. He's a great musician, but this sucks.
It actually does have some of the same chord structure of the original, but it isn't distorted, it's cleans... They're playing it at a different tempo...
Gay.... They would have had my vote had they had different lyrics. I'm sorry stomp me to the ground, I just always herd the lyrics as being raw, hard hitting, and gut wrenching... Sure theres passion and feeling, but for what they did, they shoulda just wrote original lyrics... Makes no sense trying to do things different when your just still re-writing... Isnt writing to me at all... Sounds more like they were stoned and wrote this as a joke before someone said, hmm good idea. na. not for me...
Amazing version, some songs are just as good as the original if done with passion and conviction! You can tell his heart and soul is in his voice,He truly Loves Pantera. Big thumbs up from me. I just wanna download this so I can listen to it on my way to work in the morning.
I love metal, but they did indeed do a great song justice, kind of like mr. cash with his cover of hurt if you will..only problem I had with the video is that it was far beyond driven that came in at number one in 94. Not the great southern trendkill in 96..all in all I dig it for what its worth
it's like they had this generic cowboy western song but couldnt think of words so they decide to tribute. But none of the riffs or music derrive from the song lol
why did they destroy a good song. they took the best pantera song and turned it into in fact tread kill. i have heard better things like the flushing of a toliet.
Imo it doesent sound close to the original.. only lyrics
Which in my point of interest in METAL, doesent really.. change anything. Anyone can write lyrics like that and put some random song on it.. Its really well produced and everything, but the idea is what im not very into. Although i clicked on this vid to see them actually sounding like pantera with acoustic guitars.
You're welcome to criticize, im sure i would understand you and hopefully you will do so too.
@KapaH8sU I've always thought a cover should be one of two things: 1) as faithful to the original as possible, being essentially an homage to the band and song who did it first, OR, 2) something taking the pieces of the original song and making it entirely their own - something like Rodrigo y Gabriella's version of "Stairway to Heaven".
This is obviously the latter, and it's amazing at achieving a "new" song from an old one. I do see your point...this isn't metal. Doesn't make it bad though :)
@KapaH8sU no not anyone could write lyrics like this. That is an absurd statement to think just anyone can write even good let alone great lyrics. It does put the song in a different perspective and show how well written the song is.
@KapaH8sU I actually think it shows how much more there is to the lyrics in metal music and Pantera in particualr that it stands up well as an acoustic piece. So often people criticse metal singers as just screaming, well here is the song in acoustic song ever so softly and it still sounds awesome!!!
Nice job Bailey hounds and all respect to Pantera, still one of my favourite metal bands
@KapaH8sU I THINK THATS THE POINT OF MAKING COVERS IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE LIKE THE ORIGINAL ITS SUPPOSE TO SOUND DIFFERENT OTHEWISE THEY WOULD BE CALLED REPLICAS LOL
@gabychilo Well if you're doing a cover you should atleast understand the riffs, the beats.. the beats dont sound ANYTHING like the original. The only cover is lyrical, nothing else. This is way i personally dislike it. Performance is 10/10 tho!
@KapaH8sU I wouldn't say that necessarily, just look at many metal covers of pop songs that sound nothing at all like the original.
Not to mention Dimebag would've absolutely loved this, he was a fan of just plain good music. Hell, he was almost the guitarist for Liquid Tension Experiment but due to schedule conflicts couldn't and was instead replaced by John Petrucci (who influenced Dimebag and vice versa). Which needless to say is nothing like Pantera, but once again was just damn good music.
This is great. Anyone who grew up listening to Pantera is old enough to really appreciate this...and we do. I would love to see more Pantera songs covered like this.
@Dangardify yep yep, you are 100% one that. I was a PAN-FUCKING-TERA fanatic .I couldn't afford this album & for $20 I drank the nastiest shite so I'd have the money for it...Thanks for adding the fact, cheers
wow! i must say! i have been a metal fucking head since the day i was born, and this shit really blew me away! they did an amazing job at covering this song! straight up!
There's a lot of comments that say the same thing - it's not pantera therefore it's shit kinda thing, but I guarantee you the guys in pantera would absolutely dig this because it's so different. Any band with a decent amount of skill could cover pantera, but these guys actually put some thought into this and came up with something that's very clever.
Just because pantera were "metal dudes" it doesn't mean that's the only music they liked to listen to either.
great effort but i have to say you cant replace PanterA, especially Dimebag so the acoustic kinda killed it for me, i just fucking love the riffs Dimebag would shred
I thought it would be in the same timing but with an acoustic guitar but this is a very different take on the song. Props for at least covering Pantera and putting a ton of thought into it.
I really don't like it. It makes no sense at all to convert THIS song into exactly the kinda stuff that it's meant to tear down. Sorry, guys, you misfired beautifully. That of course is just how I see it.
Interesting take on the song. Can't get quite the same motivation from this, however. Pantera's title track makes me feel like I can run through a brick wall. This makes me want to smoke a J and chill. Not that there's anything wrong with that, right?
i like the music portion but it just doesn't fit at all with the lyrics, and #1? maybe far beyond but trendkill never did. If i knew these guys' music better i may be able to say that that song (hell the whole album) is against them but i can't say for certain
i love pantera , and i love acoustic renditions of many other songs. but i just didnt like this no matter how hard i tried . sorry. thanks for sharing though.
That actually sounds cool! I didn't think Pantera songs could be remade and sound cool this way. (Not saying Pantera is incapable, but rather others.)
@VDoPanteraCFH Well, I think if you're going to do a Pantera cover it should have some raw elementary power - not the shredding by all means, but some bad ass coolness. This song is nice, but not my piece of bread.
@VDoPanteraCFH I get where you're coming from man, they did their take own take on it, and its pretty sweet. But as you said, anything Pantera should have raw power involved, and I agree
@Mikhael08 The great thing about covering a song is that you can make it yours. Some people change up the instrumentation, like Apocalyptica, and some change the style completely, like this. There's countless non-metal covers that have been covered by metal bands (for instance Metallica doing Thin Lizzy's version of Whiskey In The Jar, Black StoneCherry covering The Yarbirds' The Shape Of Thing and RATM's entire Renegades album), so it's nice to see someone going the other way for a change.
@Styxx5000 Perfectly got your point - I could imagine a 30 something late-peace frog-hippie guy in his rocking chair in front of his bungalow, playing a guitar, singing - kinda countryish and soft. Not my kind of blues, even if I like country music. (the kind what Zakk played with Pride and Glory for example) But I'm not saying it's bad. Sure maybe Dime would have loved it - or at least made a disarming smile at it.
@Fuzzhead314 Guy didn't come across to me as what I would appear as a Pantera fan. No shit, just as I began to type this, Pantera came on the radio XM 40 Liquid Metal.
