Hey Marlowe, do you string your Jazz and P basses through the body or just through the bridge. And can you explain the benefit of however you do it? Thanx
Hey dude, you are one serious player. I've been listening to your stuff for quite a while. Keep up the good work it's fantastic and I've learnt so much!
I notice you anchor your thumb on a string. After studying the Gary Willis method I learned to extend my thumb over the strings and use it for muting. It was a little hard at first but after a month or so of practice It became natural and now I do it all the time. It gives you one more tool.
@nightgrip I don't know about you but I'll take any advice anybody wants to give me and I've been playing almost as long as MarloweDK has been alive. I'll leave it up to him whether to take my advice or not.
man how are your basses set up high or low action i just can,t figure out how your fingers just swim thru the strings do you still catch cramps in your hand and after 3yrs of playing bass what level do you think i sould be on i,ve been doing music all my life but when it comes to the bass i can,t get off square 1 i play in a band but sometimes i just can,t follow i get lucky sometimes and hit the right notes what scales are most used in todays music
I dont think you could say it any better, Im a 25 year veteran of drums i just picked up bass last year and loving it, i cant seem to get the speed or how to get it together so much but I love listening to all you guys, thanks for your post
ok, so when i play my bass, i'm like, slammin the crap outta my strings just so i can hear it, but when you play, it looks like your barely touching the strings to get that great sound, now is that like, possibly my bass' cheap quality that is responsible is it my amp settings?
it has a lot to do with amp sound. in my experience, dialing in a good sound in the amp is crucial. I like it to be pretty responsive and very bassy. This way you can feel it much more and use dynamics and color and shit. i suggest turning up ur gain and refining your touch
its also mainly to do with technique ..or maybe ur strings are too old or ur bass needs to be set up properly.. to get the best sound u wanna make sure u've got all that happening b4 u go turning things up !
probably your strings. New strings are crunchy and delicious and respond to a light touch. YOu have to beat the crap out of dead strings to make them sing.
kick ass bass dawg i have the fender jass5 my question is how are you getting this tone from your bass on this video you kick a hellal fide groove sounds like one of Victor,s groove BIGG JEREMIE
Hey Marlowe, Ive been playing the Bass for over 5 years now, i am starting second grade state music School on Double Bass, have been playing with a few blues/jazz bands. I don't think my guitar is not soft enaugh, as i play a Mayones Be4 custom shop. Can you propose some finger excercises to make my fingers swim on the gryph?
man i love the tone you are getting out of that marcus, i have the same bass do you mind if i ask how you have it set up like what kind of strings do you use and how is your action?
Yes, he'd like to spend most of a day tabbing it just so you can stratch your head at the tab. Really, if you can't play it by ear, do you think you're doing to be able to play it from a tab?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That's correct. The feel and rhythm can only be learned by ear. It's not so much what notes you are playing but the way they're played. BTW MarloweDK, you've got a pretty good Rocco Prestia groove going even if it's not quite up to his level. But then there's only one Rocco. :-)
How was I being a bastard? I gave the guy a compliment. Rocco Prestia is the acknowledged master of muted finger style Funk. Nobody can do it at Rocco's level that I have ever heard. When I said he had a pretty good Rocco Prestia groove going believe me, it was meant as a compliment, esp in light of the fact he admits he is just learning how to do it.
Hey all of you, FORGET TABS...they are a crutch. The better musicians NEVER USE TABS. You will never develop a good ear until you learn to break down the song by ear and figure it out for yourself. Sure it's harder at first but in the long run you'll be a better player. It's OK for the first few months but after that stop using them. It's like training wheels on a bicycle. You'll never learn to ride until you take them off. I've been playing since 1973 and have never used Tabs.
First few months? I think tabs deserve a little more credit than a few months. Its hard enough to develop efficient chops in a just a few months. I do agree though on working ones ear and the difficulty it can encompass though. I would recommend someone practice on technique using tabs and ear. Its like playing by the books and street. Use the tab for songs to understand rhythm, use tabs that help with certain tech. Ex. have a G tabbed, and then its octave. Use that for slap and pop practice etc
Tabs are a fairly recent development. I started in the early 70's. There were no tabs then. We were forced to use our ears and are better players because of it IMO.
Well agreed. Tabs are more of a recent thing, but writing down music dates back to the medieval times of Gregorian Chant. That is pretty much the first concept of writing music that we know of in our written history. Sheet music is by far a lot more detailing than tabs, but also much harder to read. Music was written out for the intention for having other people read it and to play it. A good for to develop ones ear is to develop their vocals. Play a note and try and hum it. Maybe w/ CM scale
As a bass player that has been playing for a year now, I have to say that tabs are wonderful when practicing technique and understanding the fretboard.
However, when you learn most of that, you really want to train your ears.
