  • People shouldn't make a difference between stealing and stealing. If you're illegally downloading music, you're stealing. Don't make it something it isn't. The moral question whenever you should or shouldn't download illegal music is something I can't answer, but it's all stealing in the end.

  • People download because its free, easy and they are lazy... I buy music because I can and I enjoy to support the bands that I love. When I downloaded, id sit here looking at all these posters and t-shirts with nothing to show for it.. it was all on my computer and if i did burn a CD it still felt hollow

  • I buy a lot of music via iTunes and if I think a whole CD will be good I buy it. Everyone is guilty of downloading, but the artists need fans to actually BUY the music in order to make money. With resources like iTunes where you can just buy one or two songs if you want to, there's no reason not to spend a LITTLE money on the artists.

  • i download music to make sure i don't buy something i don't like. If i like it, i buy it. But when it comes to music that i'm a hardcore fan of, i don't mind downloading it. I just buy it.

  • Brother Ali you really go hard in the paint! I didn't have to steal your music and I found out about you so that rhetoric about people not being able to discover someone unless they illegally download their music (when you can discover them I tunes or watch YouTube) I don't really get that..

  • awesome blog, check out casketlegs. com

maybe we can link back to each other?

  • yo brother ali i love your music man... i remember buying shadows in the sun back in 05, its still one of my favorite albulms of all time.... i feel ya bro, and it kills me to see people downloading beautiful music without a care in the world and not knowing how it hurts the people making the music... i'd like to tell you hopfully people will change but i'm not sure if too many these days can go a day without the internet.... either way fam i got love for you, and i do appreciate your music

  • Why not just donate money to the RIAA. That's where your money's going anyways.

  • Brother Ali; as engaging as ever! Love hearing him talking about music. Much love from the UK.

  • That's what's up Ali... Great use of words fo' sure. I never even knew you had a Youtube account lol, I'm glad i found it! By the way, "US" was a master piece put together... I appreciate the hard work you put into it 'cause you can really tell how much you've improved these last couple years. The emotions you put into your songs and the way you deliver your words is just quite amazing. I'm proud of you man! RSE... My family, Forever!

  • That was a great video, thanks for making it. I usually buy albums but I will download stuff If i have a hard time finding it on Itunes or in stores

  • Hey man, i pretty damn sure i have listened to you riding my bike and when washing dishes man.

Much love, looking forward to seeing you on October 9th in Van City!

    Thanks.

  • thanks for posting this video. im in school for music and we talk about this all the time

more people need to watch this.

hope the album does well, the fidelity of that preview is NIIIIICCCCEEEE!!!

  • Hey, I buy most of the music I love; but sometimes an album is hard to find and when you do find it it costs a ton. I respect Brother Ali as an artist and I've bought almost all of his stuff, but what am I supposed to do for things like Rites of Passage?

  • definately gon buy the new one (US) on the 22nd. was plannin on goin to the missoula show in october but i'm too young to get in the venue. by a month. such a bummer.

  • Thats my friend!!!

  • What else can you say!!!

Brother Ali you just made me realize!!!!

Like you said U and rhymesayers still keepin' it real!!!

    612!!!

    Jason

  • i really appreciated this video, it opened my eyes quite a bit. personally i havent bought an album in years, simply because its so much easier to download than to buy. At times i thought about buying an album i really wanted, but then realized, "why would i go to the store and buy this CD for $15 when i could download the exact same thing in 5 minutes for free?" i think from now on, i will go out and buy new albums from all the REAL artists out there, Ali, you are one of them for sure.

  • you have to test drive the car before you buy it.

  • Well said, couldn't have done better myself. Truth is here the truth is here.

  • I heard you on The Current, and nearly shit myself. I've bought all your albums since dude, seriously impressive music. Then I saw you live and fuckin died. Best rapper alive motherfucker

  • i pay for stuff i like

but on a another note, while we are on the subject of supporting or helping artists.

why does slug do his tours through big faceless promotions companies, that have NO ties to hip hop, never get locals invloved, and basically use local hip hop scenes for financial gain.

if we support your music why can't you as touring artists show the same love back???

    p.s. fuck kork agency period!

  • very well said not too preachy

  • Thank you for doing such a great job in convincing my man on a topic I have probably been to preachy about . You are one cool dude. Thank you again.

  • You are totally awesome my friend.

  • Y'all know what?! Right after jumping into the shower, I'll take the train heading to the city & at least buy 1 album. Y'all can't tell me that y'all do not have the money to at least buy one album per month.... There's plenty of albums 2 buy, just look for a record store that sells 2nd hand CD's, their prices are even 30 - 40 % cheaper & they're still in good shape. I'll probably buy Blackout!2, Slaughterhouse or whatever will catch my eye..........If y'all want music-buy it, at least 1 album!!

  • not all of us ave record stores in our town.

  • This hits the nail on so the argument so well.

I, like most people as I would imagine, am a downloader. Probably 90% of the music I love and cherish was not paid for. Like a few have said, I choose to spread the word, pay for shows and memorabilia, and pretty much all other ways of showing support that do not involve free downloading.

  • i think some people would benefit from listening to the video brother ali made on this subject again, it's interesting that some people took abc from the video and some people took xyz.. when in fact abcd and xyz were all in the video. almost as if some were looking for confirmation on a belief and not taking into account everything that was said. in the new record era, with technology, downloading is not stealing to me, it is supporting and test driving ..then you buy MAYBE .:(not enuf space)

  • um here's my two cents..

my point of view is of a fan and an artist with out distribution.

as an artist i want to influence and or encaurage people through my music ..and most want to be heard, in our case, if people don;t have the money to buy it then i still want them to hear it, if they dont want to pay for it i still want them to hear it or at least have a chance to hear it by downloading it. i think if the music is good enough people will buy it. i also agree with most of ya ideas brother

  • i agree 100%

  • First let me say I'm impressed you pronounced my name right, THE FIRST TIME! You're so true about everything you said. I was left home alone this weekend with some money for food and shit, I got food in the cabinet, Im going to Borders or something tomorrow, and getting a couple albums that really deserve purchase. Appreciate the response, and cant wait for Us.

Just wondering, do you listen to Jay Electronica?

  • stealing is stealing. lol @ these dudes making sorry excuses and then still claiming to be real "supporters" of the art. And like Brother Ali said "spreading the word" only goes so far. I could hand out 25 Rhymesayers flyers after I steal Murs' whole discog. That aint necessarily gonna help his people break even for his album's expenses.

if u really love this culture, give back to it. give back to the community of music. artists put a lot of work into their craft they dont deserve to get jerked

  • Right on Brother Ali, I'll buy your new album and I'll hopefully see you in the Bay Area soon ! peace brother.

  • Starting Monday, I'm buying "Undisputed Truth", and I'm going to buy "Us" when it hits. I'm done downloading sh*t! It's just not fair to the artists who put their hearts, souls and LIVES into the music. Those who are lucky enough to have that station in life deserve to be at least paid for their efforts, if not respected in conjunction with the former. I love what you lay (and throw) down Mr. Ali! Peace and Love everybody.

  • He tried to explain it guys! But ur not getting it.

I first heard about Brother Ali from a coworker at a grocery store, about 2 years ago. He had purchased the whole collection so far, and told me I had to hear this sick hip-hop so he gave me a burned copy. Undisputed Truth is almost all I've listened to, of Ali's, since then. It's even in my top 5 hip-hop albums! But people, be effing real! If you download it for free it's stealing! I've downloaded music too, but it ends here...

  • my first ali album was a copy of "the champion" that my brother left behind when he moved out. i played it on accident. i thought MY cd was in and it turned out to be ali. ever since then, things haven't been the same. you are an inspiration. you inspire me, and that's REAL. i have a "burnt" copy of "the undisputed truth." i've listened to that more times than any other album. i will say this; i plan on buying ALL your albums. cause like you said, i'm missing that physical connection. peace ali.

  • i agree but disagree. times are tough and dropping 20 bucks on a record just isnt easy when you need that 20 to go to the electric bill. stealing? come on now, find a better word. its a slur to the fans who spread your good name everyday. thats our end of the bargain in my view. spreading it and increasing your popularity. i know ive personally must have showed over 100 people your music. then think about all the people they tell. your records will be bought from a portion of all of those people

  • people whove got the dough, sure they should pay. but to put everyone in the same categories as thieves is a generalization thats a bit dishonest and offensive.

  • If something is for sale and you take it without paying, that's stealing. The fact that you don't FEEL like you're stealing doesn't change the fact that someone's time, energy and money went into that product. You feel entitled to it because you spread the word? Who's offending who? How would you feel if you worked a day at your job and instead of your boss paying you, they spread the word?

  • Problem is there's two differant definitons of stealing that use to be one. With real, physical stuff like a car, you steal it, someone can't sell it and has to buy a new one. You made them lose money. That the legal definition.

With a digital album that doesn't exist in the real world, if I won't or can't buy it anyway, me downloading it has no affect other than I get to enjoy music, but someone did work hard on it and they deserve to be paid. This is the moral problem and moral definition.

  • For you to enjoy the music, I spend months of my life and tens of thousands of dollars with the understanding that I'll be able to SELL the product to recoup my expenses and maybe make some profit for the work and risk. Instead of paying your share to enjoy the music, you just copy and rock on. I'm not trippin' I'm just asking you to call a spade a spade. It's stealing.

  • Morally yes, it's stealing I agree with you and I thank you for your work and dedication but it's still not the same as pocketing a cd from the store and walking out. If I've got the money, yes I will buy it, if I don't, then I can't buy it but I still want to listen to it. Maybe I should make the choice to enjoy music because I can't, not won't, pay for it but I still want to. If I can't pay you for your work in the first place, me downloading it doesn't make a differance.

  • You really don't believe that, do you? I mean that isn't really logical to you, right? I hope not.

  • I'm goign to assume you mean my last sentance. So, yes it s logical. Think for a second. If I'm not going to buy an album i nthe frist place, that means they won't be getting my money. Downloading something that doesn't physically exist does nto stop them from selling that thing. Therefore ym actions have not caused them to lose any money. Morally you can call it stealing, but it is not stealing in the financial sense.

  • With that being said, I'll confess that I am guilty of occasionally downloading illegally. More specifically, Brother Ali. I kind of agree with ngaotw123 because about a year ago I had absolutely no idea who "Brother Ali" was. The only thing that enticed me to buy and play catch-up with ALL of his albums was first hearing him through illegal downloads. However, trying to minimize thievery is wrong.

  • I don't mean to ramble on but just think for a second that if everyone who was a fan of Brother Ali said... I'll download it because I don't plan to buy it anyway, and it'll do no harm because other people *will* buy it. Sounds nice but when everyone starts to think like you, those who actually pay become fewer and fewer, until he can no longer afford to make quality music ...and then do you still believe you haven't hurt him? And in the process, yourself?

  • I think that there is no doubt that downloading illegally is stealing, but as a society we've duped ourselves into believing that piracy isn't REALLY stealing or isn't as bad as stealing something physical, when it obviously is. For instance, if I hire someone to use my paint to paint my house, but refuse to pay when they're done, it's stealing. I didn't pay for anything physical, I payed for a SERVICE. When someone invests time and money into something YOU'RE benefiting from, you should pay.

  • Thats an entireley differant situation, they're painting YOUR house and yours only. I didn't commission brother ali for his work. If I don't pay the painters they've wasted time and money, if I don't pay for an album, they lose nothing becuase they can still sell it. The painters can't take the paint off and put it on someone elses house.

  • If EVERYONE had that logic, they wouldn't be able to pay for the production of an album, nor would they be able to sell the album. Your logic is flawed because you assume you're the only person that will follow that logic. It doesn't make sense any way you put it. If you steal wifi from a neighbor just because you wouldn't buy it anyway, you're still gankin someone's product which took time and effort to create or maintain. Your logic is way off my dude.

  • i get your point brother, but throwing that word around insists the idea that this stealing is only benefiting one party. that you are gaining nothing and the stealer is gaining everything. Slug had it right when he said he didnt really give a shit about the illegal downloading. that if it wasnt for that, he wouldnt have the success he has now. for every one record stolen, 100 people hear it. and then those 100 people tell others. sorry, but who is losing here? looks like a win/win to me.

  • classicrockfan describing this as a win/win....ur a fucking idiot. stealing is stealing. shut the fuck up.

  • buy quality. Download the disposable stuff.... my opinion.

  • nice fucking argument jackass.

  • but when i just can't but album because i live in Estonia and it's far away form USA and here they just don't sell real hiphop ! and is too expensive to order one form USA and ship it here it cost's like 50 bucks or so , and i cant buy from itunes because i dont have a credit card .... i really would buy a physical copy but i just cant .....

  • First off I'd like to say I love hwo real and down to earth you are with your fans. I'm wondering, you said you'd really like peopleto buy the albums, but what if they really don't have the cash, not just they don't want to pay for it but they can't pay for it. Is it ok for someones to download the album cuz they love the music when they don't really have another option?

  • I was the same way for a while with the downloading. But albums aren't really the main income. Whenever I'd hear about a band rolling through my town, I'd always go see them and most likely always get a t-shirt which are near $20 to $35. Trying to make up for it.
