All those superstitions are from growing up Catholic. I don't think it's so much with the Irish Catholics, but more of a Mediterranean thing. All I know is growing up with my Catholic Italian family in NY, we had all of these superstitions. It was mostly with the grandparents and great grandparents. The evil eye was one, saying "ugly baby" 3 times and spitting, curses were taken seriously, black crows were a sign of evil coming, etc . I can totally relate.
