  • was this video shot in New Orleans? if so what year? Thanks

  • Beautiful Song

  • SUENA COMO JORGE MIGUEL

  • Sadz where had that day...

  • I've heard once that this song was written in memory of Matt's brother who used to draw Matt's album's covers. What a beautiful proof of love it is !

  • My question 8 people really dislike this song really!?

  • Way more hits than VEVO.

  • Deeply, brilliantly, soulfully done...AND OH SOOOOOOO TRUE!

    BRAVO!!

  • im pretty ignorant when it comes to poetry but my ears know what they like and this is it

  • How could you believe that the life within the seed

    That grew arms that reached

    And a heart that beat.

    And lips that smiled

    And eyes that cried.

    Could ever die?

What more can be said. Matt Johnson genius

  • yes! this is great stuff and wow...if other artists were 1/100th of this.

  • This song will be played at my funeral.

  • How wrong is the global taste for music nowadays? Here we have only 166,000 views for this amazing song and on the other hand millions for the Lady GaGa e Justin Bieber alikes. The world is musically illiterate at the moment. I hope it gets better. I feel sorry for the young ones.

  • @thecosmopolitandude let us keep this song for ourselves. those who find it, are the ones who seek what's real.

  • @thecosmopolitandude "Pop" music is aimed at the 7 to 12 year olds. This means that the GaGas, Biebers and Rhianahs of this world are children's entertainers. This age group is also the biggest consumers of music, bigger than we are. By 14 most of these have dropped off and moved on (think of how many women you know with a REAL passion for music). Matt and his ilk attract an adult audience which is fairly small. What he needs to do is release some new material.

  • @thecosmopolitandude The path is narrow man!

  • @thecosmopolitandude there are not too many artist out there that are as good as what was.I do feel sorry for the younger people.glad i was here to see when music was music.

  • The real skill of Matt Johnson was his ability to not only create highly-polished sonic masterpieces, but also to create the most earthy emotive music. Can't think of anyone else who has that skill in such abundance.

  • @gethsenamane Some Love, Deep Love, continues after death <3

  • i miss my grandma. <3

    rest in peace, abuelita querida.

  • In Jesus' name,

    AMEN !

  • I miss you, mom.

  • For me Matt Johnson is one of the greatest songwriters to have ever lived ,the pictures he conjures with words and the feelings they invoke are truely mind blowing.Long may he continue I for one will never tire of him and his music a true genius, and master of his craft.

  • How can anyone dislike this??

You must be retarded! It's pure class!

    Brilliant!

  • My favorite lines are "Tears may blind the eyes, but the soul is not deceived..." and " "In our lives we hunger for those we cannot touch. All the thoughts unuttered, and all the feelings unexpressed- play upon our hearts like the mist upon our breath..."

Love this song and cry practically every time I hear it. RIP Gaby M., Christina R, & my cousin Davina

  • Lost my friend today, I'm bawling as I type this :(

  • honest guy

  • Wow, I love this song! What a powerful song and what truer words than "when everything that dies shall rise" and "love is stronger than death"... Just lost my identical twin sister in October. God I miss her so much but I have the hope and promise of seeing her again.. Ego amo te Jetavia

  • The first time I heard this song I burst into tears...at a red light.

  • @TSearcy

    I did too !

  • xoxo R.I.P Don

  • this dude ia great song writer i saw them in 94 after the dusk alum

  • Yeah !!...just another one of the awesome songs off DUSK my favourite THE THE album (Love their other stuff also but this album just nailed it totally !) - Johnny Marr's guitar colours in Matt Johnsons lyrics perfectly...although Matts an accomplished guitarist himself!..blah blah ..good shit!

  • I never really understood this song to the fullest extent, but I think I do now. It's a beautiful thing...

  • Awoke by grief,

    our spirits speak:

    How could you believe

that the life within the seed

    that grew arms that reached

    and heart that beat

    and lips that smiled

    and eyes that cried

    could ever die?

  • @anjiaoshi

    Right on. Beautiful, right??

    : )

  • Nowhere. <3

  • best band in the 80s

  • Wow!

  • i dare you to name a better vocal performance in the history of music

  • @basehead617 pavarotti?

  • Great song & lyrics... Thanks for sharing!

  • @artisticluminiere I think the is The The's Masterpiece. The songs are pretty revealing of the Human psyche/Soul

  • pure as a heart

  • he´s owesome! all his lyrics are great but this is my favourite...

  • iove this song...it speaks the truth!

  • "Nowhere". Gregg Araki is good. This wouldnt be the first great song I heard on one of his movies.

  • a truly beautiful song

Here come the blue skies, here comes springtime, when the rivers run high and the tears run dry, when everything that dies... shall rise

  • For the life of me, I can't understand why there are no vids of "This is the Night" from 'Dusk' on YT. One of my fav songs off from that cd and some of the most incredible lyrics to a song anywhere.

  • I really wish Matt would release some new songs ...where is he? ...whats he doing ... does anybody know? ...I refuse to believe that a phenomenal songwriter such as Matt Johnson has nothing more to offer. If anyone knows what Matts doing these days ...please let me know.

  • By far, this is my favorite album of all time, bar none.

  • been a fan for years. this is the first time i've heard this song. amazing i think i want it played at my funeral.

  • the Wonderful genius of Matt Johnson at its deepest best

5 people clearly have some issues

  • think the sound is great hes vocals are haunting ...

hope and love is a good thing and nothing bad comes from that ..

memmories make uss sad off what or who were missing ..but in a way tnats a good thing cause as long as we rember there always still here .xx

untill we meet again ...when were all cats( vanilla sky talk sorry) loven god bless you all 2nt and alaways teewee and magstar tx m

  • Brillliant.......!

  • Listen to the lyrics. This must be one of the happiest songs Matt has written. Things do not truly die, they live on, dormant waiting to return, as themselves or as their offspring, carrying on. Mourning is pointless, and the cycle should be celebrated as a natural progression. LISTEN.

  • @madmic1967 Completely agree. Was absolutely gutted when my car got stolen with my TheThe cassettes in it (yes tape cassettes !) .Am reliving some great memories here....thanks all !

  • I've been a fan of Matt since '86 (I have a The The tattoo!) so when at my wife's funeral this was the natural song to play.

  • A song from the pit of the soul. He truly is a soul miner. As it says at the beginning of Dylans Tarantula " writers and poets tell us how we feel by telling us how they feel". Matt Johnson certainly gets 10/10 for being able to do just that. This must be one of the few places on youtube where there doesn't seem to be any disagreement.

  • I've lost all my familly... :'( This is my song for them... ♥♥♥ Forever... Thank you Matt to have wrote this song, to have found this words... This song is stronger than my own words...

  • This guy wrote with some quality.

I'll never understand why his music isn't more widely played

  • @MandyP101 Sadly the mainstream music players can't play such deep meaningful music. It makes people stop and think, it's not Muzak for ants to work to.

  • Matt wrote this following the death of his brother, I think... heartfelt and unintentional apologetic for the idea of ressurrection: Love is stronger than death!

  • A voz dele, o violão com as cordas de aço e o jeito que o baixo entra na música e td mais, rodado no clássico P&B, baixo custo e qualidade de sobra. Clip e música perfeitos.

  • this song means so mush to me .

  • One of the best song of The The!!!

  • I remember this from the film Nowhere

  • Beautiful song, absolutely timeless, evokes an array of emotions every single time I listen to it.

  • love this, makes me think of my late partener steph, who also loved the the,god bless you sweet cheeks xxx

  • why can't i embed this vid in facebook?

  • why cant i imbed this vid in facebook?

  • Además de ser un tema dedicado la memoria del hermano de Matt Jonshon, es uno de los principales temas de la película de culto "Nowhere" de Gregg Araki

  • one of the best songs ever made!

  • is this guy famous? what a voice, your vocals are truly awesome, you have your own style my friend, complete star dude a pleasure to listen to

  • The The were mainly Matt Johnson and were active in the late 80s - early 90s. This song is one of my all-time faves

  • Dusk is one of my favourite albums ever! Haven't heard about these guys since.

  • This song was written in memory of Matt Johnson's brother, who died during production of album Dusk.

    Great album, great song!

  • I've read Matt is going back with a new album(maybe a film score)

    Thanx for your great music!

Where have you been, amazing THE THE?

  • very cool.....i hope you are watching craig!!

  • All good and well, but nothing from fucking "hanky panky" on tube,

  • This is spirituality, genius and extremely strong and beautiful music combined

  • what a moving song

  • 'Me and my friend were walking in the cold light of mourning'...

  • ooh i just rememebered people think!!

    misspelling is more fun!

  • Powerful song..I get emotional each time I listen to it..The words are so deep!!

  • heard this today on here...and burst out crying,....you see,...I had a good friend in the 80's, and we both loved the the,...and all these great songs from that era,...we had lunch together,...and then he was off to his new job in advertising...and was hit by a driver fleeing the cops after robbing a bank,...he was killed minutes after we had parted,...love is stronger than death ...I miss you my friend...and will see you again one day...

  • ;* il hope

  • sorry for your loss. This reminds me of all of the good friends I had in the 80's who are now passed on. Also.

  • Such a beautiful song to hold your memory of him close ... god bless (((HUGS)))

  • @webkinzfreak221 That's heavy man. I like your sentiments. I hope you do indeed meet again.

  • @webkinzfreak221 so sorry to hear that, you are right, you will see him again, and know that he can hear you if you talk to him, his spirit is with you, he just lost his physical body. god bless xxxxxxx

  • @webkinzfreak221 love lasts 4 everXXX

  • This is such a beautiful song -- I cried the first time I heard it. Sad and then so hopeful, very spiritual.

  • Matt Johnson is god.

  • Morrissey and Matt Johnson, two talents that had it right even through the bluck of the 80's. thank you both for the memories...

  • @nomores1 I couldn,t agree more, Morrissey could touch you so deeply, but at the same time make you chuckle too. Matt Johnson is a genius. x

  • What an outstanding song!!!!! Love this!

  • this is the best band ever !!

there is someone is my age that love them or even know them ?

    please tell haha

    (:

  • probably not ;-)

nevertheless Matt Johnson is one of the best

    singer songwriter musician ever

  • Me.

  • just the most beautiful stuff around.

  • the the are the bestttttttt

i wish i had a friend in my age [16] tht no them !

    its sucksssssssssssss

  • Be patient. He's out there somewhere...

  • Beautiful, he wrote this in memory of his brother who died. Very moving.

  • Was he the brother who did the album art work, the one who painted?

Beautiful song, sad and full of hope at the same time. And Johnny Marr....always loved his guitar-playing.Thanks for uploading.

  • No, it was his younger brother Eugene who died. The brother that did the artwork was his older brother Andy. His artwork is credited under the name "Andy Dog". If you want to get a bit of info about The The put "This is The The Day Biography" into your search engine. Hope that helps.

  • I'll do that. Thanks.

  • Great song

  • The lyrics can touch your soul

  • WOW!

I never payed attention to the lyrics before. The The has to be one of the most underrated bands of the 80s!

    Epic Lyrics!

  • never heard till now , and omg love them :)

  • best album of thethe - timeless, great production - every song a masterpiece. absolutely worth the money

  • Amazingly beautiful song that I haven't heard in years. I still remember the lyrics, wow. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Great song sorrily soured ever so slightly by it's inclusion in one of the most convoluted, confusing, unentertaining, unintelligeable, eye straining, brain burning and just plain f*cking awful attempts at filmmaking: A completely forgettable flick entitled Nowhere.

  • How they came up with this song, I have no idea. They must be musical geniuses. Definetly one of my favorite songs. If you don't have The Dusk by these guys, go get it, it is great.

  • the the is just one guy, matt johnson.

  • One guy featuring Johnny Marr, Dave Palmer and James (the Sheepdog haircut guy). He's the main man alright, not disputing that but he has the good sense and taste to get amazing musicians in to make his work even more impressive sounding.

  • This song reminds me of that movie Nowhere.

  • Some of the best songwriting of the 80's

Raw. Not to be confused with so much other pish out there

  • 90s in this case, Kingicrazy. But I get your point. Matt Johnson has a fantastic voice and was / (is?) a great songwriter.

  • incredibly underated band in the radio, but really famous to people who can appreciate theis brilliance... love em here in Greece

  • I love theThe and this song is so beautiful and so true. We all will face death like it or not and knowing that love is stronger than death helps. I dedicate this to my best friend since childhood Alan who died of cancer.Love is stronger than death!!!RIP!

  • Nowhere is one of the most amazing and beautiful movies ever!!! Seeing it was the first time I ever heard this song and it has stuck with me forever...it was used perfectly and made me listen to/buy other music from TT

  • A really great song used for a terrible movie. This song was the only good part about the film Nowhere. It's a real shame this didn't receive more widespread airplay, it's an excellent song. And contrary to what everyone says, do not go out of you way to see Nowhere. For that matter avoid the Doom Generation films all together, they're just awful. Do however go out of your way to find this song. It's a brilliant masterpiece, that was sorely overlooked.

  • That is so cool narathh, Ive just finished watching this movie on IFC. I havent seen it from the beginning, but judging on what I have seen.... very unusual, strange picture. This song really caught my attention too, thats why im here :-) I Think Ill include it in my collection.

  • the movie was" Nowhere " , wild flick

  • Nowhere is one of the best movies I know. Check out some of the other Gregg Araki films too if you get the chance.

  • strange ... i first heard this song in the very end of a movie called "Nowhere". at the rolling texts..just had to find out what its name was

  • One of the most underrated musical geniuses in rock music history. I had this album when it first came out and I still listen to it.

  • Couldn't agree more!

  • me too, still have an old cassette (!!!) from the 80s and still love to listen to them! Some things are just timeless

  • Matt Johnson is amazing . . . underrated is an understatement.

  • I was working in Tower Records when this album came out. I used to push this album on any customer who would listen to me.

  • defenetly one of the best songs ever

  • Loved The the since he started...love the way Matt Johnson 'whispers' the lyrics, makes it all the more personal/confidential...like sneaking a peek at someones diary.Great Stuff!

  • If you love the way he sort of whispers the lyrics, check out "Helpline Operator." It's one of my favorites, and his singing is, as usual, amazing.

  • I've had the 'DUSK' album on vinyl since 1993?

It was released then I think, yeh Helpline is great...cheers! Thanks for the reply.

  • I replied to you with a recommendation--it got posted as a regular comment :(

Also, there is a live version of the song I refer to on YouTube, but you can't hear the vocal "whispering" in the live version--look for the studio version.

  • My dad gave me the album "Mind Bomb" because I had been looking for something different to listen to and I have to say, it is incredible. I'm hearing THIS song for the first time and I love it. I'm sixteen and no one my age knows who these guys are.

  • The The are brilliant ive been a fan for 22 years!!!get the infected album(& dvd) & the dusk album.amazing.happy listening

  • Thanks, I'll deffinately check that album out. If you go on MySpace, they have like all of their albums posted and you can listen for free.

  • i first heard this song at the end of Nowhere (1997) .. its been a fave of mine ever since. There's a cover out there by Angela McClumsky but its nowhere near the original

  • Me too and thats one of my top ten favorite movies. It totally fits the theme and ending of the movie.

  • Ha That was the same place that I heard it 1st as well, Javadadee! Crazy ass Movie , but an excellent tune to roll the credit to I think. I love this song!

  • wonderful, moving song by a master musician

    Matt

    the master!!!

  • Yes, this is an awesome song! I haven't seen this video since the 90's. It seems it was filmed in my hometown, New Orleans.

  • That's a little strange. I always associate this song with Katrina. I hadn't thought about it since it was new and then, right at the end of August 2005, it came back just in time.

  • @girraud Yes, it was filmed in N.O., according to Matt himself in an interview in The Vox zine, March '01 issue.

  • May be one of the top ten rock songs ever written...Lyrics unbelievable, the delivery of them great. A super patient song with flawless execution.

  • Such true sentiments. This is defo one of the geatest songs ever written. The lyrics and the delivery are exceptional. Matt Johnson is one of the most criminally under-rated songwriters ever. Every single song he wrote is gilded with gold. The refrain and then leading up to the immortal lines "how could you believe that the life within the seed that grew arms that reached, (etc) is brilliant. An immortal beloved song.

  • Simply Beautiful!

  • I swear this album saved my life when I was so young and depressed, and yeah I listened to it on a walkman too! Indulging my "I am so wise and cool and depressed at 20" emotions;) It still sounds so good too!

  • I remember this superbe album on my walkman when I used to go everywhere by foot. And yes, those mornings were also cold and fresh. A masterpiece.

  • ur comment leaves me in thought, the memories i have with songs like this an the days gone by, oh how times have changed but i relive them all again with these songs

  • Amazing.. my fav song/artist of all time

  • It certainly is... 10 out of 10 from me...

  • Is Dusk a good album? always intended buying it but never did...

  • yes

  • It was pretty damn good in my opinion

    1 to 10 I'd give it an 8

  • please buy the album... I didn't really like the band back in the nineties, but then I borrowed Dusk from a friend recently, and it's really, really brilliant. One of the biggest albums of the decade in my opinion. Matt Johnson's voice is very "storytelling" and the album is almost like a soundtrack
