Forget about the means of al-Qaeda, let's just talk about their aims. These killers, sadists and barbarians want to instate a global Islamic theocratic state, under the rule of which nothing of what Chomsky apparently cherishes is allowed: democracy, woman's rights, freedom of speech or any kind of humanitarian values.

Notwithstanding Chomsky's brilliant analytical ability - the underlying premise of his presentation, here - the "un-people" premise - as usual - is thoroughly flawed on its face: If the Palestinians have been devalued as people - blame their own leaders. Have we ever seen an equitable exchange of prisoners between Israel and the Palestinians? When did we last hear of the Palestinians offering a release of ONE Israeli, for ONE Palestinian? Who is responsible for the devaluation?

@lourak look at traditional devalued peoples in the span of history. Seek out the psychology behind being a person who is subject to marginalization, such as Blacks in America. While Palestinians have in their lot, those who flagrantly defy any sort of stance on peace by provoking and outright committing violent acts, I would excuse this mentality. It's a small point to hold them to the fire for it; the defeated victim will tend to assiduously seek maximal profit from it's small advantages.

It makes them look quite generous and enforces a surface view of the Palestinians' barbarity while also, considering these prisoners may return to engage in futher hostile actions against Israel, will ensure a future reason to once again encroach into Palestinian territory for future military/ defense actions.

In practice, these penalties for the most part don't happen because of different factors such as when Muslims live in a secular state or other reasons such as living in a Muslim state where there is a tyrannical ruler, who may abuse this power. Just as the US constitution is subject to interpretation by const. lawyers so is the Shari'a.

@boskinator About 1st question, in many cases they are not, as I mentioned above. Islamic law is subject to qualifications according to changing social situations. As for the countries you mentioned above,they are places that are either countries infested with military or politcal turmoil or they are despotic governments in geopolitical contests . 3) Could you link me to the cut "columns". The building didn't completely collapse. They even had to remove part large part of the building debris with a crane. The fires weakened the beams from my understanding. Little resistance? The building was on fire for some time and was able to withstand some stress.
