OK - I've heard of people "making the piano sing", but not quite so literally. What's with the "Ha!" at 5:30 and the subsequent female singing? Also, is there a musical notation for slamming the lid, or did Rzewski just write, "slam the lid" lol ??
That was a great performance. The Xenakis-like clusters of notes were dotted with dexterity, the impressionistic running notes tackled with panache, and the flying staccatos were punctuated with accuracy. The optional lid-slamming is included in this performance, which clearly led to a few raised eyebrows. The glissandos tearing up and down the entire keyboard of Var.10 were also well-executed. I think a star is definitely born.
This is incredible! Was Rzewski at the performance? Have you met him? He's really a sweet man. Congrats on all your success and performances! Get a website!!
The performer really has full measure of this piece. Powerful, virtuosic, yet rhythmically extremely flexible. Really, Rzewski would be proud! Sound like it is being improvised!
How can you learn a piece like this! You have to have it somewhat in mind, but a lot of reading ! So you must read real good!
The lid slamming was ROOOFFLLL never seen that, all that we can do with a piano... crazy :), But i m not sure Beethoven would like it loooll

I really dislike that "ha"... Too bad, because the piece is amazing. However, many pianist ignore screaming and slamming...
