Sawney Bean was the name given to a mish mash of real tales about transient or outcast families, given a name in a tale included in a pro union pamphlet of the early 18th century, circulated in Edinburgh and London and may have been written by Daniel Defoe under a nom de plume.
i would like to add a reporter did some investigation on sawney bean, and there is no evidence to suggest he was a cannibil, now he did exist records have shown that, historians have stated that he would not have been take from Ayrshire to Edinburgh to stand trial as that didnt happen. There is also no evidence that he had incestual relationships with his children. Maybe there was another reason why this has been made up. The programme was on Radio 4 about a year ago and very interesting it was
Fact: Sawney Beane, his wife, 8 sons, 6 daughters, and 32 grandchildren were a family of cannibals that lived in the caves near Galloway, Scotland in the early 17th Century. Although the total number is not known, it is believed they claimed over 50 victims per year. The entire family was taken by an army detachment to Edinburgh and executed, apparently without trial.
Oh my fucking god you mean there was really a cannibal clan damn and i thought Wrong Turn, the Hills Have Eyes and house of a 1000 corpses was fictional and oh yes i'm not forgetting Old Man Logan comic story Hulk and She-Hulk inbreed chidlren and grandchildren.
@TheMrBlinx Im scottish and i cant understand most of it. They both have strange accents, mixture of Irish and North of Scotland, almost like a scottish pikey accent. Weird.
my favorite version of this story is Cormac McCarthy's CHILD OF GOD, itself the likely inspiration for Tobe Hooper's classic film THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
@cfmceroz What the child of god inspired Texas chain saw?TCSM was based on Ed Gein. The hills have eyes was based on Sawney Bean(as was the wrong turn).
@ahenderson666 McCarthy's controversial book, perhaps the most literate horror novel ever written, draws heavily on sawney bean legend, and places it in an American context. Tobe Hooper most certainly read this book as it came out immediately before he began filming TCM.
@cfmceroz I dont dispute McCarthy drew on the Sawney Bean legend for insperation, however i watched a documentary on Gein only a few days ago, and Tobe was interviewed, during which he irrefutably states that TCM was based on Ed Gein, as was Buffalo Bill in silence of the lambs. If the book came out just prior to the filming of TCM, one can most certainly assume it had already been scripted before the book was released.
its completely fucking real. supoosedly a thousand people went missing in those parts whilst he and the clan were living there. 40 members in the clan. all inbred basically. dates vary though. there also was christie cleek. who ate about thirty people in the grampians. but that part of the world. in a famine. there are no animals around. nature takes its place

@Manson21mad Aye im sure its real :) when i was younger i had a "scottish facts and scottish history" book : and it had him in it :) also when i was a bairn i got told stories of it :)
I believe that sawney beane really existed long time ago but Im not sure about the story being 100% accurate. There is a big possibility that the story was revised many times...

I liked the video, but the audio was very hard for me to understand, I'm afraid. (I'm from the Southern part of the US.)
I'm doing a role playing game where the players meet up with a fantasy version of the Sawney Bean clan. I'll make sure the players feel very claustrophobic should they decide to enter the cave. (And they will. RPG groups always enter caves.)
Yeah the broad scots dialect is hard to understand. I lived in the uk for 3 1/2 years and scotland for a year and a 1/2. After a while you get used to the terminology. Basically most of their conversation is just about how deep the cave is and how there are chambers towards the back they can;t get to. They use words like richt which is right and alricht which is alright. Hopefully that clarifies it a little.
@assilembrandywine lol yup its true, TELL them there's a family of pissed off Dragon, an army of Chaos Dwarves and a hoard of Undead in the cave and they will still go in.... (I know I've been a RPG player for years both GM and player)
@assilembrandywine I have wanted to game this out too, only set it in Medieval Russia, just at the time paganism was beginning to give way to Christianity, with partisans on both sides. After the setup (exposition/tasking), there's a detective phase in which the party leads would have to determine the true location of "Beane's" cave, then an assault planning phase, a combat phase, and denouement. On the trail, the PCs could pick up (rent) NPC an archer detachment, guide, etc.
Hi ahve always told my 9 year old son how we used to stay at Ma Grannies caravan at Lendalfoot and ma Dad would take Me to see the cave. Last year we bought a caravan at Cairnryan and every time we pass I try to tell him where it is..can you still get down to it and how..also remember a hermits cave further up one of the hills, any idea where that is as well..Any help would be much appreciated to show a wee boy his Dad doesn't make up stories,,thanks
The hermit was Snib Scott aka Henry Ewing Torbett who gave up life as a banker in dundee and called off his marriage to live out his days by the sea at Ballantrae. It is visible by turning off the road at bennane hill a couple of mile before Ballantrae.
Yes i know that cave and i allways thought that was Beans cave, the new road sort of by passes the cave entrance now, were when i was on holliday up there the road went by the entrance around Bennine head,i hope this is the same cave,it is still accessible on foot to this day, never seen the proper beans cave so i must seek it out one day,i am from B/burn lancashire but love to holiday in that area.,used to camp at McKrays farm on the lane from Lendlefoot to Pinmore,i wonder what hapened them?
Thanks for posting this. I've been working on a script of this story for a few years now (In Halifax Nova Scotia) and this is the first I've seen of the inside of the cave. Because it is a fictional story, I now have to decide if I should use this as the look of the cave for the film or make it more visually intersting for the big screen. Cheers!
Guid vid lads its a shame the story is a lot a pish...1 o the bhoys researched the deaths and executions at that time in Edinburgh...and guess whit theres nae family ever been frog marched hung burnt or 1/4! "true"
Guid story though n dont let the truth get in the road o a guid story eh!!
I didn't say they were Irish. The accent is a Scottish one known as Galloway/Irish, try catching the Stena HSS over the North Channel & when you land you'll hear it aplenty.
Pretty interesting. But to my understanding. There is more than one possible site for the Sawney Bean clan sea cave. The one blocked up with a boulder I'm more inclined to give credit to. Because according to the legend the king had a boulder lodged in the entrance to make sure it would never be used for such a purpose again. Personally I do believe the legend. It just rings true to me. But a 1000 dead people in 25 years ain't a whole lot. They must have reaved cattle and sheep as well.
I`ve had a few messages asking what the Language/accent is. Its a Wigtownshire accent (we`re from Stranraer) and admittedly is a wee bit hard to catch if you`re not used to it. Obviously theres still a few `scots` words still used here.
Why would a legend be so real, I mean they didnt even add any fairys coming to take over the Beans bodies or anything. I believe it is true. What a place to live in.
VERY INTERESTING VIDEO!!! Sawney Bean must have been real as there is too much hipe for it not. one day ill go up wi some mates and we wont come out till we have the proofe, bones, skelington or other. Watch out for us this summer in the local papers! Will take footage too!
Hi...the BBC (and many others) most recently have done extensive research into Sawney Bean, and there is not a shred of evidence that he existed. As I said in an earlier post, there are indeed confirmed cases of cannibals in Scotland, but they were not, any of them, Sawney Bean (one case was in Perth, and there are court records to back it up).
Hi...I think your video is great fun. It's terrific, and I've watched it a few times. I wasn't commenting at all on what you had done. You see, I've been a big "fan" of Sawney Bean and the tale for over 30 years now. In fact, I've written an e-novel and screenplay about Sawney entitled "Lords of Darkness - The True Tale of Sawney Bean"...and as you can see by that title, I've certainly got an interest in it actually being true.
Sadly, after almost 3 decades of research - much of it in Scotland (by myself and many others), it just turns out not to be true. Of course, I'm not going to put quotes around the "true" part of the title (not yet anyway:)). Anyway, keep up the good work!
Make sure you can get permission to enter the cave blocked by the boulder. That is the only cave that matches the story. Because the king ordered it sealed with a boulder.
was in the cave for the first time the day, stay near it fuckin freaky wee place it is gonnae go back and try tae squeeze through tae the other chamber in a couple o days the one thing was enterin the cave the tide was a bit high so had to time each wave or we would have been pretty much fucked! nice place very fuckin interesting, the only annoying thing aboot it is the graffiti on the walls, although some of it is dated 1962 good shelter though if yer up for a drink! and its very warm inside it
There are a couple of actual, documented cases of cannibalism in Scotland...but alas, Sawney Bean is not one of them. Sawney Bean is fiction, based on a single broadsheet, dating to around 1701. Extensive research has been done into Sawney and there are no records whatsover about him. And the language in the video they are speaking is English...with some Scots words and phrases in there (of course).
Interesting, that the movie "The Hills have Eyes" was based on Sawney Bean. This location seems infinitly more scary and authentic - if indeed Sawney Bean existed (and don't we all like to believe our urban legend to an extend).
Interesting language those chaps speak - it vaguely sounds like English ... or is that how Sawney and his folks sounded? At one point I though hearing somebody say something like "Breeng in d' girl" ... (Just kidding ... :))
Sawney Bean and his family, DID NOT exist, as much as it may have given the uk a colourful past there is absoloutly no evidence of his existence or crimes. In fact it apears that even his location changes, galloway to some, the north of england to others. Im afraid he's just another sweeney todd
Could people have actually lived there. Was there cleared space? It looked rather rocky-not like Indian caves in the US where the floor of the cave was cleared of debris. Very interesting-an some Scottish;)
allegedly, a cannibal tribe lived there 3 or 4 hundred years ago and murdered, robbbed and ate people. Try a search for Sawney Bean. Parts of the cave have been blocked off by the authorities as I assume people go in and get stuck or lost. Its quite an eerie place though.
It's the cave with the boulder blocking the entrance. Until it's removed and caves explored. We won't know the full story. Too many aspects of the story ring true and the abundance of human bones buried in the area dating the era. Provide some evidence of the clan.
Fun Fact :this was the inspiration for Wes Cravens "the hills have eyes"

I`ve had a few messages asking what the Language/accent is. Its a Wigtownshire accent (we`re from Stranraer) and admittedly is a wee bit hard to catch if you`re not used to it. Obviously theres still a few `scots` words still used here.

Why would a legend be so real, I mean they didnt even add any fairys coming to take over the Beans bodies or anything. I believe it is true. What a place to live in.

I was in the cave years ago when I was a waen and even if Sawny wisnae real its still one helluva atmospheric place.

The video was a bit of light hearted fun. Try not to take it too seriously.

TalkingPictureCo 4 years ago
Sadly, after almost 3 decades of research - much of it in Scotland (by myself and many others), it just turns out not to be true. Of course, I'm not going to put quotes around the "true" part of the title (not yet anyway:)). Anyway, keep up the good work!

i know its true.

Make sure you can get permission to enter the cave blocked by the boulder. That is the only cave that matches the story. Because the king ordered it sealed with a boulder.

Whether you believe the Sawney bean legend or not, there are historical facts of cannabilism taking place in Scotland in the 16th century.
ofotcnest 4 years ago 4
There are a couple of actual, documented cases of cannibalism in Scotland...but alas, Sawney Bean is not one of them. Sawney Bean is fiction, based on a single broadsheet, dating to around 1701. Extensive research has been done into Sawney and there are no records whatsover about him. And the language in the video they are speaking is English...with some Scots words and phrases in there (of course).
TalkingPictureCo 4 years ago 2
fantastic video. Sawney bean did exist. it is mentioned in chroncles of Scotish Kingdom.
supermanpaki 4 years ago 3
sawney bean didn't exist, it's purely a work of fiction...entertaining nonetheless.

How do you know? Me and you obviously weren't there to know for sure. The only way to know history for what it truely is... is to be there.

fenriz218 4 years ago 4
Sawney Bean and his family, DID NOT exist, as much as it may have given the uk a colourful past there is absoloutly no evidence of his existence or crimes. In fact it apears that even his location changes, galloway to some, the north of england to others. Im afraid he's just another sweeney todd
ryansmatheson 4 years ago
The clue is in the description ( Alexander Sawney Bean was - legend tells). The video was only a bit of fun. Oh, and learn to spell.

Could people have actually lived there. Was there cleared space? It looked rather rocky-not like Indian caves in the US where the floor of the cave was cleared of debris. Very interesting-an some Scottish;)
StrwbreFldz4evR 4 years ago
allegedly, a cannibal tribe lived there 3 or 4 hundred years ago and murdered, robbbed and ate people. Try a search for Sawney Bean. Parts of the cave have been blocked off by the authorities as I assume people go in and get stuck or lost. Its quite an eerie place though.
leonardbullhock 4 years ago
It's the cave with the boulder blocking the entrance. Until it's removed and caves explored. We won't know the full story. Too many aspects of the story ring true and the abundance of human bones buried in the area dating the era. Provide some evidence of the clan.
