Just because Grid extensively models crashes (very unrealistically, however), doesn't mean it is anywhere near Gran Turismo. The best drivers of Gran Turismo instantly are dominating on the track as real racecar drivers now (check out the recent results for the Dubai 24 HR). Gran Turismo goes extensively goes out of its way to prove its realism by having side by side comparisons of real drivers on real tracks with the same car and track equivalents in the Gran Turismo game (99.9%perfect match)

Gran Turismo never included crashes before GT5 due to license issues. The beauty of racing includes the crashes, and that awkward feeling that you feel during an overtake, trying to be as smooth as possible, in order to not have a crash, damaging your car and loosing priceless time.
