loved this band back in the day, i always thought they studio wizards until i started checking out this live footage on youtube...incredible group, rare combination of talent, originality and CHOPS
16th December 2001 we lost one of the greatest singer/songwriters this island has ever seen. Fortunately the music of Stuart Adamson lives on. The band with the great Mike Peters on vocals will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band by touring and playing the classic album the Crossing. If you get a chance go and see them.
Totally agree with all the comments although I am a massive U2 fan. Saw them three times aswell brilliant, would have been bigger than U2 R.I.P... Really missed.Have booked tickets to see them in brum in feb
So sad man. He made me stop drinking. Just love him until my death. I'm coming up on 3 yrs sober. Thank you Stuart! I sing this song after every lead I give.He is singing my life. Our lives are not easy.Remember when he said we are all one?We truly are and lets not ever forget that!
No point in preaching to the converted, BC probably never got the recogntion that they deserved, but the music is fantastic and thankfully will stay with us. I never go to see Stuart and the boys in their heyday, but I am definitely going to see the new band in Feb 2012 to wallow in nostalgia and enjoy some fantastic music!
Big Country and this song WOW. It is not a comparison with U2 or any other band....different belief, attitude, conviction... This is superb song ... aong with so many other BC songs such as Peace in our time
im tired of hearing one band being put up against another, it's not a competition. this song means so much to me, it moves me every time i listen to it.
I’ll never understand. Their sound was mainstream enough to fit in most playlists in the 80's AND 90's with ease. Their sound was also uniquely their own. Their music was first rate –from the writing to recording to performing - they were brilliant. A truly, truly great band, with great depth and variety in their song catalog. As a fan of music it's a shame they didn't get the exposure they so deserved. As a fan of Big Country I'm just fortunate they made music.
Big Country were a group not well managed. They could have been 'the' band of the era. U2 are class and different ............Big country were just not given the promotion they deserved.
I remember very well hearing Chance in 1983 as a kid in grade 11. It knocked me over and BC became not just my 'favourite band', but an expression of my soul. I didn't understand Chance much at age 16, but I do now and I still cry. I miss Stuart so much it hurts me each day.
This is such a great song. I didnt know about Stu... So Sad, but many people are discovering now this great band, musicians and Stu great songwriting. Thanks Stu, and your music will live forever. People with good taste and fans will do it.

saw them in bristol this year with mike peters and going to watch them again in exeter they were that good, i was at this concert as a young 15 year old and have had the honour of seeing BC many times over the years, still love them R.I.P Stuart i know your looking down and smiling
Top band. Remember being 17 and having The Crossing on in the cassette player (what were they?) of my mum's Talbot Horizon in 1984. How grown up was I? Happy days.
@jr99uk great band , i like your story , i always remember my dad playing ABBA in the late 70s in his Simca driving about the country side in N-E Scotland
As I recall both The Edge and Stuart were big Bill Nelson (Be Bop Deluxe) fans. I think The Edge went down the road of "playing the effects" more than Stuart did, especially in the later stuff. Also the general "anthemic" nature of both group's music, with definite Celtic influences, is pretty clear too, as opposed to a lot of British Isles bands that made it in America, which were much more English (various prog groups) or were playing primarily in American idioms (Stones, Zep, Clapton).
they were compared because they both set off on there journeys together and thats what the media do,i saw u2 at rock city in the early days and a cpl of months later big country, the U2 started doing some pre-war tour gigs and asked big country to support em,that was at the royal concert hall nottingham, great nite never forgotten, thank you Mr adamson...
Re U2, I don't know why people compare these two groups. I would literally give my right arm to have seen Stuart sing just once (I am left-handed anyway!). I would not give 5p to see U2. Stuart's music has touched my soul like no other muscian has ever done and I will always be grateful to him for that. I am Irish and Bono couldnt give a stuff about Ireland, the country is turning into a basket case and he won't even pay taxes there, an arsehole for sure!!
@gsm1881 - loved your comments about U2- I have seen Big Country 5 times- twice in Belfast- 3 times in London- fuckin best live band ever. I have also seen U2 in Dublin RTE studio- meeting Bono afterwards- I didnt bother speaking to him as he was standing there posing for photos with a bodyguard, I thought 'what a prick'- the missus said' he's only a wee shite' Good to Big Country reformed- maybe they might come back and play N. Ireland again
@1966SJK1966 Thanks. Sadly, I did see U2 live once (not impressed but we are all different) but never Big Country. Big Country are playing in Belfast in April. By all accounts Mike Peters who is filling in as lead, is doing a great job. Funny that, I saw Bono walking around London in the early 80s, he was all dressed up in his 'gear' but no one but me recognised him, he was tiny (wee shite for sure)! People seem to forget that here in the UK U2 were not well known until after Live Aid.
@gsm1881 My opinion is the two groups had a lot in common. Same time period when they came out, a similar "guitar sound" with little keyboards, lots of great melodies. No disrespect to either band. I love them both!
@NickMotown Nick, both of their sounds were simliar as the sound came from the Skids who were around before U2 .The Skids were founded by Stuart Adamson, the when he left them he formed Big Country. Listen to 'Grey Parade' and hear the 'U2 sound' before U2 made it!!! I always find it amusing that people think U2 wrote ' the Saints are Coming' as it sounds like their sound so much.
@gsm1881 Spot on....was never a huge U2 or Bono fan (I prefer musicians to stick to music and politicians to stick to politics).. Seen Big country in Legends,Dingwall in 1991(I think)...wasn't really a fan at the time but as a lorry driver parked up for the night there was nothing better to do...............I was a fan when I left !
shame you never got to see big country ive seen loads of bands and toured around with quite afew and got to say that there wasnt many that sounded or played like big country.such ashame and waste that stuarts gone but he left behind some great tunes;-)
@gsm1881 I am lucky enough to have seen both Big Country and U2 on many occasions :) Also MET Stuart after a gig, what a Beautiful Man !! Sadly missed . R.I.P :(
@gsm1881 ~ I agree 100%. I regret hugely that I never saw BC whilst SA was alive. At times it's hard to understand the comparisons made re: popular music. Another example: The Cure and Depeche Mode are often compared, but are nothing alike in style or sound. I actually get angry that (here in the US), BC are unfairly written off as "1-hit wonders" for "In a Big Country." I simply don't "get" how "Steeltown" (my favourite LP) was #1 in the UK but peaked at #72 in the US.
There's another live version of this somewhere where Stuart tells the audience "as long as you're there, I'll be here"....but he's not, is he? Brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it. Man was a genius, RIP Stuart.
Love it @3:28 when he says, "We can all share this song." What a tender heart. Missing you and your passion for connecting music with people and vice versa, Stuart!
I first heard the Skids in 1978, I think. I listened to Big Country later on...such a very unique sound and feel...Scottish Rock....nothing ever since has been the same.
i am cheered by the tributes. I remember very well, first hearing 'Chance' when I was 17 in late 1983 and totally shocked. I was young and isolated, somewhat (hey, I'm a Canuck), but deluged by pop music. The Crossing saved my soul, no doubt, and created a love for music much broadly than BC. Of course, BC is very dear to me, Stuart a most precious friend that I will forever look to for inspiration, comfort and insight into the human condition.
@gillo69 ... the guitar Stuart is using is a Moon Telecaster. Jimmy Moon is a custom guitar maker in Glasgow. He currently makes acoustic guitar for the likes of Bryan Adams and made electric mandolins and all sorts for Big Country. These boys were brilliant and nice blokes too.
@luborules Aye cheers man, They are my life long favourite band, You goin to see em on this new tour with Mike Peters on vocals?? Comin to Dublin in April, Can't wait, Never thought i'd be going to another Big Country Gig! Their music will live forever!
one of two songs i have to repeat every time i have the cd on. flat brilliance is all i can say. love stuart's voice it's very distictive. and of course i love big country.
mark iserwood stuart adamson,,hope ur somewhere beta, mark stuart neva undrestand, y hope ur in a betta place, take care guys, miss ya,through a big country dreams of being you ,not just yet though
Every so often, Big Country songs come into my head and always remember the amazing first album in particular and some brilliant ballads they produced as well. Saw them at The Manchester Academy c. 1994-ish? - Stuart Adamson was brilliant, never heard so many F words by a lead singer inbetween songs LOL - very very sadly missed - R.I.P. mate
I was lucky enough to have seen BC a few times in their element. I remember not being able to sleep the night before a new album release. I really miss that feeling. Stuart adamson- a great musician, song writer and entertainer. Resting in peace.
Great song. Love Stuarts accent. Stuart Adamson will always be remembered as a one of the best song writers/front men in the 80's. His music and legacy will live on. Let his passing be a reminder to all of us. We need to look after our loved ones and recognise any signs of depression. To all those who are depressed listen to this great man and learn from the grave mistake he made. Light a candle every year on April 11th in remembrance of Stuart. Keep safe.
this song was very special to me when I was only 18. It still is special. Beyond the music, and despite my voracious appetitie for reading, I have rarely found such poetry. The line "The skirts hang so heavy around your head that you never knew you were young" is remarkable. I look back to 26 years ago, and still remember the brilliance now as I did then. BC - you will never die.
@mongo88now88 just what i was thinking, too: such lovely and timeless poetry. like the lines in Come Back To Me (i think): 'as the years hang on me, you will always be young,' which are even more poignant in retrospect.
One of my late brother Phil's (R.I.P. 40 yrs young) favourite groups. This song is now getting played a lot on NI radio - Cool FM and Citybeat. Has it been re-released?
One of my late brother Phil's (R.I.P. 40 yrs young) favouite groups. This song is now getting polayed a lot on NI radio - Colld FM and Citybeat. Has it been re-released?
@NumberOneDavid i was lucky enough to see them at Wembley Stadium in 87 when they supported David Bowie on his "glass spider tour"---they were brilliant.
i saw BIG COUNTRY , many ,many , times, but for me my best memory , was THE TOWN AND COUNTRY CLUB , cambden london , this was their encore song and after wards as we left the venue , everybody ,as one started sing this song in the street , as we walked down the road together , as brothers and sisters , THE BIG COUNTRY familly ,GOD BLESS STUART ,WE LOVED YOU ,and the guys .
What a band. Saw them support queen at knebworth years ago and they were awesome. Then saw them a few times in the late 80's. Shame about the tragedy. What a talent.
I saw them perform this live at the Manchester Apollo. Stuart had the crowd singing the chorus for what seemed like ages!It was a magical night. They are still one of my favourite bands.RIP Stuart, you are sadly missed.
@byeckfella i was at that concert got the very last ticket amazin night we must have sung the chorous for 15 minutes after it ended till they came back on
Saw BC at Reading Festival 1982 (I think), met up with two Scots guys from Fife who introduced us to Blue Labelled Smirnoff!! We got right up the front for th efirst couple of numbers hardly any crowd as it was around lunchtime. within two-three numbers forty thousand nutters screaming for more. I never danced so much in all my life arm in arm with those Scots guys.Musicianship of th ehighest quality The best gig next to Slade the year or so earlier I've ever been to - Stuart Adamson RIP
He was so young when he wrote this sad song- it makes me shivering listening the words and the prophetic meaning: never felt so lonely- he had no chance- where did the feeling go...WHY ???- Stu we miss you even NOW!!!
What a truly tragic loss. If only he knew how many people were motivated by his voice and words ... maybe he'd be back in the Highlands to reap his true reward. Perhaps he's already there.
It's rare that a guitarist on backing vocals can step forward and take the lead role in a new band. Adamson did that brilliantly going from The Skids to BC. RIP Stuart.
i saw Big Country at reading festival 1984 and loved them, they were on before The Stranglers who i had gone to see, but i was blown away by Big Country. RIP STUART .
one thing I never get about youtube is how people who don't like a band have nothing better to do in their sad, pathetic lives other than to say negative site about bands they don't like. Why? Why not spend your energy on something else?
U2? You mean the biggest, most overrated and most appallingly boring band in the world.
Big Country deserved so much more attention. I have everything they've done on my Ipod (Studio, live, demos, etc.) and not a weel goes by that I don't listen to them.
I don't own any U2. I thought it was funny when the world finally realized those pious twats liked to drink and fuck just like everyone else, and Bono couldn't actually walk on water.
@bfall66 u2 and big country are both great bands ... the perception people have of the individuals is pretty redundant.
as far as how popular any particular band is ... that is not really a gauge of how good any band is really .... just look at the charts and the stupid awards ceremonies lol
@mwinstanley7 Can't speak for the UK and the rest of Europe, but here in the USA, U2 is possibly the most overplayed and overrated band on the radio. IMO, Big Country was far superior in talent, musical composition, &c.
out of control when the crowd just HOWLS at 5:09--never heard anything like it, and i have seen many shows

1966SJK1966 1 year ago

NickMotown 1 year ago
@NickMotown Nick, both of their sounds were simliar as the sound came from the Skids who were around before U2 .The Skids were founded by Stuart Adamson, the when he left them he formed Big Country. Listen to 'Grey Parade' and hear the 'U2 sound' before U2 made it!!! I always find it amusing that people think U2 wrote ' the Saints are Coming' as it sounds like their sound so much.

@gsm1881 Hi, Seen them both, Stuart wins hands down, I like U2 but they dont even come close

Man was a genius, RIP Stuart.

i am cheered by the tributes.

Anyone know what guitar Stuart is playing here????
gillo69 1 year ago
@gillo69 .Fender Telecaster
Aussiephil99 1 year ago
@gillo69 ... the guitar Stuart is using is a Moon Telecaster. Jimmy Moon is a custom guitar maker in Glasgow. He currently makes acoustic guitar for the likes of Bryan Adams and made electric mandolins and all sorts for Big Country. These boys were brilliant and nice blokes too.

BC - you will never die.
mongo88now88 1 year ago 2
@mongo88now88 just what i was thinking, too: such lovely and timeless poetry. like the lines in Come Back To Me (i think): 'as the years hang on me, you will always be young,' which are even more poignant in retrospect.

We got right up the front for th efirst couple of numbers hardly any crowd as it was around lunchtime. within two-three numbers forty thousand nutters screaming for more. I never danced so much in all my life arm in arm with those Scots guys.Musicianship of th ehighest quality The best gig next to Slade the year or so earlier I've ever been to - Stuart Adamson RIP

one thing I never get about youtube is how people who don't like a band have nothing better to do in their sad, pathetic lives other than to say negative site about bands they don't like.

R.I.P. Stuart. You are truly missed.

@bfall66 u2 and big country are both great bands ... the perception people have of the individuals is pretty redundant.
as far as how popular any particular band is ... that is not really a gauge of how good any band is really .... just look at the charts and the stupid awards ceremonies lol
mwinstanley7 1 year ago
@mwinstanley7 Can't speak for the UK and the rest of Europe, but here in the USA, U2 is possibly the most overplayed and overrated band on the radio. IMO, Big Country was far superior in talent, musical composition, &c.
