  • William Blatty based the role on Chris McNiel after her. They're best friends till this day.

  • What an interesting story. Kind of ironic with all the love and wisdom she puts out into the world. Atleast the Mother in "The Exorcist" was a loving Mother and love triumphed in the end.

  • OMG her whole career is based on her terrified reaction to having the director of the Exorcist to prove to her that evil really exists in the world in some non-incarnate way. Oh the portents, you New Age dweeb :-)

  • @AndoDouglas The author of the book, not the director of the film.

  • THIS is so untrue & why a great actress Shirley Maclaine would say this is creepy

  • Why is she focusing only on herself in this interview? Wasn't this supposed to be about her reactions to the movie....sounds like she's only sour-grapes about it. Doesn't surprise me though since I read that Friedkin was a tremendous dick back then.

  • they couldn't have edited out that frog in her throat at the beginning?

  • she said she channels

  • In "The Exorcist: From Novel to Film," Blatty revealed he wanted MacLaine to play the part in the film, since he had really written it for her. But director Bill Friedkin preferred Ellen Burstyn, and in the meantime MacLaine shot the picture, "The Posession of Joel Delaney," which put her out of the running.

Interestingly, after seeing "Delany" on TV in 1980s, my brother, who had no knowledge of all this, remarked, "Shirley MacLaine would have been perfect as the mother in 'The Exorcist'."

  • This is unfair to Shirley Maclaine and her daughter. :(
