Guess what, there *were* real athletes before UFC was even conceived. Read up on MMA history. The Gracies initiated value tudo in the 1920's and the Japanese started Shooto in 1985. MMA gained much fame and recognition in 1993 when Royce Gracie submitted 3 fighters in less than 5 minutes. PRIDE in Japan produced the best (like the Shamrock bros and Rutten). They dominated UFC fighters easily.

White did a lot of good things for the sport, but crediting him for its success is not true.

i disagree, i think the ball was already going downhill, the biggest MMA promotion was pride, it had the rules, weight classes, etc.. he changed the rules because unified rules are more suitable for a cage and that was basically a no brainer, Zuffa bought pride, the talented fighters went to the UFC and things started snowballing from there.
