But then there are always unique bands like this who smash genre conventions and make everything more complicated than it should be. xD
Lyrical themes should also be taken into account. Death metal generally deals with themes of death, violence and extremely graphic descriptions of gore, whereas black metal tends to deal with satanism, blasphemy, anti-christianism and other devilish themes, as well as paganism, fantasy and nature. Though as I said, there are always exceptions.

@trommnorse Not true at all, one the most influential black metal bands of all time deals almost exclusively in the Tolkien universe. I, of course, am talking about Summoning, they are atmospheric black metal, but black metal none-the-less.

Hey, you guys are awesome, the music is really good and just all around has a good sound. I really like this and I think I just found an awesome band that I will definitely be listening to for a while =D. Keep up the good work.
I have been listening to metal for over six years now, but I have never heard anything like this. Most things I like are from the black metal genre, enjoying "true", really dark ambient and even symphonic black metal all the same. But this blows off everything... No other band I know of is able to express such power, such amazing melodies and rhythms like Winterburst. And, good lords, it's a demo on top of that - their very first release! I will sure as hell buy a CD of this marvelous work.
@Trefalas Ah, don't worry - I am quite familiar with these bands and know of the incredibly powerful, eargasmic, musical inferno they unleash. While my favorite of the 'regular' black metal bands would be Dark Funeral, I have most of those guys' works as well and listen to them on a daily basis.
What really impressed me about Winterburst, however, is the amazing overall quality despite the band being brand new and 'merely' having a demo. The release of the album will rock my world once more!

as a musician i can be something of a music snob, about 2 years ago i thought all metal was garbage that should be wiped from the earth. After getting into iron maiden, i branched out into less mainstream metals such as power metal, (angra, hibria) black metal (gorgoroth, krypt) death metal, industrial metal, etc.
I am proud to say that i have realized metal is far more than just screaming and yelling. Their is a huge art behind each genre, that is unrespected by most musicians.
well same here i hated metal until i listened closely to the lyrics and to instrumentals its not just nonsense banging or yelling its brutal and i love metal i'll be a metal head till i die

I have to disagree. You have to treat autotune as an instrument - a means of integrating lyrics into synth - rather than a vocal style, and then it actually has great artistic potential.
The problem is, it's mostly used by talentless pop bands as a substitute for real vocals, so no one can take it seriously anymore.

about 14 to 17yrs ago i'd be an immediate superfan of this band. grreat band in it's genre with indeed an amazing sound to start with.
unfortunately music evolves as do the musical preferences and with so many music styles i like this won't cut it to the 'to buy list'
BUT does make want to put on some classic early Amorphis, Dissection or even Dismal Euphony (yes yes different but stll did remind me in some way).

as a musician i can be something of a music snob, about 2 years ago i thought all metal was garbage that should be wiped from the earth. After getting into iron maiden, i branched out into less mainstream metals such as power metal, (angra, hibria) black metal (gorgoroth, krypt) death metal, industrial metal, etc.
I am proud to say that i have realized metal is far more than just screaming and yelling. Their is a huge art behind each genre, that is unrespected by most musicians.

I have to disagree. You have to treat autotune as an instrument - a means of integrating lyrics into synth - rather than a vocal style, and then it actually has great artistic potential.
The problem is, it's mostly used by talentless pop bands as a substitute for real vocals, so no one can take it seriously anymore.
