It's not true that an atheist is "afraid" of accepting the existence of god. What is there to fear? If anything, we'd be relieved to know there is an afterlife, and there is someone/something watching over us. Due to the fact that atheist tend towards logic, we don't believe it. As for theists, they do have something to fear when the idea of accepting there isn't a god. Knowing that their whole life they had false hope and faith and nothing happens after death..
