Loved the haunting pad @ 3:20... The 600 sounds really moody, dark, emotional. Love it. I might just be able to get a non-functioning one for dirt-cheap. I think I would have lots of fun with it. How would you compare it to other synths?
hello ! I own a prophet 600 , have read the manual but still haven't understood how to dump the factory sounds , and make my own sounds " from scratch " .
No problem, you don't "dump" the sounds. If you want to make your own just twist the knobs until you find the sound you're after. Then to save that sound press the record button and type in any number from 00-99. Whatever number you type in is where the new sound will be stored.
i have been trying to twist the knobs , definitely ! I mean , i start from the " factory sounds " , which is the " preset " mode . Is that the right way ? Shall i switch the " preset " button off ? or just modify the factory sounds?
I don't even get closer to what i want , working on the awful stored sounds !!!!
I am a singer-songwriter looking for a nice warm synth for the stage. I can't afford the prophet 08, and I really love the Juno 60 but it is just too heavy,
If I could I would take a wurlitzer piano with me, so I am looking for this kind of percussive bell sound... I also love to play with sinus wave sounds and I like to play with the filters (though you can always by external effects) I also think the yamahan dx7 isn't all bad for a digital synth. Any ideas are much appreciated!
@kinderspiel27 : If you'd just as soon have a wurli on stage then I suggest getting a midi keyboard and laptop or a good midi-sound-station (not sure of the technical name, but a box with sounds... Blofeld makes a great one for around 1000). If it's just you by yourself on stage... don't get an analog synth unless you're a synth junky. OR get an analog synth AND a good midi setup.
I've owned both..sold the 600 over 7 years ago..never looked back.
The 600 doesn't have the attach, punchiness, or presence that the 5 has...PLUS, the digital envelopes on the 600 are obvious. And the filter has stepping.
nice ambient/kosmische vibe going on. nearly every synth demo on youtube is straight cheesy sounding fart nonsense. glad to finally see something reasonable.
I like the p600 better than the 5 honestly. I don't really think the P5 has much more balls other than snappy envs. there is still stepping in the p5 filter not as much as the p600.
some really cool sounds from this baby, i really cant wait till mines serviced and up and running again, in my own opinion the 600 is better than the juno simply because its a much darker sound, it also has 2osc's and can use all 3 waveforms, it makes a range of sounds quite beyond the juno, but thats not to say its better, its really a case of which you prefer really, a bit like .... red apples or white apples its all down to taste
I like the Juno 106 quite a bit but it's a different beast than the Prophet 600. In a nutshell the Juno is more stable and "nicer" sounding which isn't always a good thing. The Prophet is a bit harsher in an old school analog way.
I just had to listen to this synth again! I love the dark early eighties horror film sound track style you can get from it. You just can't get that atmosphere with any digital VST rubbish no matter how much you try; very nice pad.
the '08 is quite a bit more versatile and has does have more at the bass end. But this is a great synth too in quite a different way. Excellent at moody, washes of sound.
Anybody know where to download sound patches for the SCI Prophet 600 (sysex)... or anybody willing to share sounds?

If you're looking for a gigging synth then the Prophet 600 is not the best choice unless you like tweaking the tuning regularly.
ludwigtrap 1 year ago
Yes, I gather, I was acutally thinking the Alesis Micron might be a decent choice, though the keybord is very small...

Music for exploring the cathedral like interior of a vast alien spaceship? What gorgeous and eerie sounds!

I dont think the p5 really has that much more balls, more like a 1/2 nutsworth

could wine country update the OS for snappier envelopes?
beside of this fault (I tried one in real and it really sounded lame for basses) I liked the sound to certain degrees.

OS?

how does this synth compare to the prophet 5?
UnchainTheNight1 2 years ago
The Prophet 5 has more balls and costs about 5 times as much.

@ludwigtrap : how does it compare to like a JUNO or the POLYSIX?

MARANTZamp 2 years ago
can do some similar sounds, but the 600 just doesn't cut through in a mix like the p5
MARANTZamp 2 years ago
@UnchainTheNight1 The Prophet 600 is more stable because it's DCO. The frequency sweep in the poly mod section is accurate too. I've owned both :)

are all 600s filters so stepy?
jimcrow6969 2 years ago
It's not the filter that's steppy; it's the controller.
trylonperisphere 2 years ago
Yup. The cpu tracking on the pots is what causes it to step like that. It's still a wonderful keyboard though. Very unique sounding.

reminds me of the soundtrack to the thing.

this is the ~BEST~ prophet 600 demo. Most the rest demos make it sound like a farting beat box. AAA+++

how does this hold up against a Juno-106? i've heard they are similary...but this seems quite different.
i have a juno and i'm not completely happy with it.

Well put Ludwigtrap! I have a Juno-6 in front of me now and it's not as raw compared to the Pro600. Both synths are very nice old school sounding!

I have one of the first (1983) The first with midi. The contacts need to be cleaned only after 25 years. The microprocessor pad is still good.

I hadn't heard one of these until now. The 5 is cool but this is very nice too and I bet not as often at the repair shop (5 can be very unstable).
Cool sounds!

is this pure analog? Im told over and over its better the the 08, more raw thick bass.
12string 3 years ago
Definitely. I don't think Sequential was into the digitally-controlled oscillator thing until the Prophet VS, if at all.
As for it being better than the '08, I can't really see it. There's at least 20 years of technology between the two of them.
cubdukat 3 years ago 3
The Prophet VS doesn't have DCO's, it uses digital waveforms.
kfrausto 3 years ago
Are you adding effects? Sounds like there's some reverb in the mix

Yes,
It's plugged into an amp with reverb.
