  • @everheardofbeast23 Olympic lifters bring the elbows up and rack the bar on the shoulders because that's how it's done in the full clean and jerk in order to drop under the weight and follow with the squat, and whatever type of clean or press they do is always assistance for the clean and jerk so it's desirable to use as similar form to it as possible.

    There's no point in racking the weight when you're doing this as a mere shoulders/traps exercise.

  • Terrible form. I don't know why somebody would put this video up. And if you're doing cleans for shoulders and traps you're doing it for all the wrong reasons. The hang clean is supposed to develop explosive hip power. It simulates a form tackle in football, traps are just a bonus.

    No, most American weightlifters don't dominate the world championships, but he is a four-time national champion and beat a defending world champion in competition.

    I'm not entirely sure if it was him who did it, but regardless of who it was, it definitely didn't get in the way of their lifting, and Glenn Pendlay is probably the finest coach in Olympic lifting today.

  • Depends on the client/athlete and their experience, flexibility, and strength. A stonger athlete would "need" a little weight on the bar, or it would go haywire and they would have to use a less ballistic movement to control the bar, which of course goes against the purpose of this particular lift. It's best to err on the side of caution, and if in doubt begin with a PVC pipe, and progress from there.

To the morons here who think this exercise won't build up the traps/shoulders give it a go for a few sets of 8-12 reps with a weight you can handle and tell me your traps/shoulders aren't burning up. According to the so called "experts" comments - only slow controlled movements build muscle and explosive movements are "useless"?? Hilarious!

    I've done this lift in football. The fact that the video is titled "Build Huge Shoulders & Traps with Hang Cleans" scares me because this exercise isn't shoulders and traps. This exercise isn't even for bodybuilding, it's for powerlifting. The hang clean isn't meant to "build huge muscles" it's a full-body exercise that builds fast twitch muscle fibers for explosion. You CANNOT do this weight in a slow controlled manner if you're doing it properly.

  • please take this off. This video is entirely wrong. Your results with clients are very impressive but I can tell you now it is not from doing Olympic movements improperly. I would advise you to also stop having your clients do them as well because you lack the knowledge and proper equipment for the lifts.

  • Complete nonsensical form and exercise for shoulders. What you are doing here is more like a standing preacher curl which I use for my forearms. For shoulders with a guided form and posture I will suggest Clean & Jerk or Clean

    & Press (same thing), the Olympic form, which incidentally requires too much of practice to avoid slip disc. Completely misguided upload. Pls remove this.

    -weight should always be over center of your foot

    -elbows should remain straight until the pull so that your hips generate power

    -bar should come in contact much lower on the thigh, and only briefly

    -feet should leave the ground

    -no pulling with the arms, only the traps should shrug up

    -rack position should be much higher, bar should be trapped on the shoulders and arms should be close to horizontal

    -hang clean is not for bodybuilding anyway, just have people do upright rows

  • I would caution viewers of this video to find a strength coach with experience to show you the Olympic lifts and correct your form. Practice with a PVC pipe until you get the technique correct. There are too many variables and risk of "The last thing I remember." moments. Olympic lifts produce the most benefits for athletes. if done incorrectly, with too much weight, they can produce the most catastrophic and life changing injuries.

  • @AbbotFairplay good advice. if i might add a little tip: it might be better to use an empty barbell rather than a PVC pipe/broom handle, simple because the latter wont be heavy enough to create enough inertia to have the correct form.
